[2022] Four Continents Championships (18.01-23.01) - Men's SP + FS

Please dear fellow satellites, it seems you don't agree these days. It's okay, your arguments are interesting, your opinions are heard, but wouldn't it be better to save the nerves of everyone and calm down now?

We need your analyses and sharp mind for the upcoming games! In the end, we're all in the same boat: We root for a Japanese who is coached by Canadiens, judged by different nationalities at a competition in China and so on. We can't change anything about that, neither the politics behind the scenes. Yuzuru never shows disrespect to anyone, so it's time for us to remember how great our multinational planet is. :grouphug:

Excuse me for intruding, I'm off again and leave it to you.

Just a thought - there is the general skating chat thread for technical talk about UR , pre rotations, bad spins etc .

I don’t regard BO as a much of a mover and shaker when it comes to influence.  I think his reputation from his own career and the people he’s trained does it for him to an extent.  I think the club and staff were good for Yuzuru , especially the access to new choreographers and I’m thankful that with the post 2014  trend in Russia that he didn’t end up there. (  Not that I don’t think he could withstand the pressure but better that he didn’t have to, especially as a workaholic teenager - that could have been disastrous if his stubbornness didn’t kick in to help him which hopefully it would have if it had come to it. Fortunately it didn’t ). On balance I think TCC was good for him.

IDK why old stuff is being dragged up but it’s not surprising that Tracey and Brian regard JF as their greatest personal achievement- Yuzuru was already a contender when he came to them whereas Javier  was very much a work in progress in need of guidance. Then the cultural stuff kicks in which I’m not qualified to comment on as an Irish/English mongrel with no stake but my own aesthetic preferences in the game.  Let’s not fight old battles - focus on what is to come.

I don't even know where to start, lol.

1. I wasn't even talking about actual corruption. Just recognition of someone known that subconciously influences all of us. But if you want to talk about corruption:

2. Chanflation existed, Gadbois bonus exists and there are MULTIPLE examples when Canadian or related to Canada skaters got VERY generous treatment from judges. If it''s not as much visible right now it's because for unknown reasons to me Canadian figure skating is falling apart everywhere outside of ice dance. If you don't trust me, here you have articles by Martina and shanshani. Pure math. It doesn't cover even half of the problem and lacks nuance, but better this than nothing. And I'm pretty sad that we don't have numbers from before 2015. It would be quite a goldmine.

3. Junhwan is not a "crappy" skater, but yes, he did not deserve this score just like 99% of the scores these days are undeserved. Kazuki didn't deserve his score either - his 4s< wasn't called. Junhwan got 44.5 PCS and Kazuki less than 42 and I don't think it's a coincidence because nothing in FS is a coincidence. That's all.

4. I could give stories how some rinks in Japan where closed last summer for few weeks (good that Yuzuru trains outside of rink's working hours), but why would I? Everybody struggle right now. It's not a competition in who has it harder.

EDIT: Uno is rich af and trains at private rinks, ffs.

Am I really not allowed to talk about URs anymore? Wtf is happening?! I don't understand.

I'm well aware that shanshani's uncovered some evidence of national bias among every single nationality of judges other than the Australians. * Which is why I think only Australians should be allowed to judge at major ISU championships, because they do it right. But to go from that to saying that all international judges will look favorably on TCC skaters because they like Brian's reputation, is way too much of a stretch and I just don't buy it.

I can't be objective about PChan, because I never really liked him as a skater while he was competing, and never understood why Skate Canada preferred to support  him over Kevin. So I consider myself unqualified to comment. I will say that Chanflation only ever helped Patrick, and no one else.

As for Gadbois, ice dancing judging is so reputation-based it's a whole different conversation. But is the 'Gadbois bonus', which I don't necessarily agree exists, there because Gadbois has influence, or is it because both the former and current World Champions choose to skate there? Nearly all of the top pairs at Gadbois were at the top and winning internationally before they came to Gadbois. So if there's any influence on scores, it's a chicken and egg scenario of which came first.

Of course you can talk about how the judges are out to lunch on scoring. Just don't use it as a way of dissing skaters who don't deserve the diss.  And don't invent influences that aren't there.

* and as a Canadian, I find it appalling that our judges aren't more neutral and fair.
