Shizuka: What you've accumulated and your achievements to date won't change so –

There's one word that's missing in the translation which makes Yuzu's response even more meaningful. Shizuka said one more word after "so" before Yuzu replied and that word was: "OMOIKIRI" which means "give it your all", "don't hold anything back", "take the plunge" or "go for broke" (risk everything in an all-out effort).

I apologize for commenting on my own previous post, but I wanted to explain the phrase "go for broke", its origins, and how appropriate it is as a translation of the Japanese word "omoikiri" used by Shizuka in her advice to Yuzu considering what is at stake and his commitment to including the quad Axel in the free skate.

Since it may not interest everyone, I will hide it under a spoiler.

Spoiler

According to one dictionary definition, if you go for broke, you take the most extreme or risky of the possible courses of action in order to try to achieve success.

According to Grammarist.com:

Go for broke means to risk everything, to put everything on the line. The phrase "go for broke" was made popular by the 1951 American film, Go for Broke! The film depicted the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, a unit composed entirely of Japanese-Americans. The motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was "Go for broke", and they did indeed put everything on the line. For its size and length of service, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was the most decorated military unit in the history of the United States, being awarded, amongst other decorations, 9,486 Purple Heart medals.

The Purple Heart is awarded to soldiers who have been wounded or killed in action. In fact, the 100th Battalion, one of the units making up the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up of Japanese-Americans from Hawaii, was called "The Purple Heart Battalion".

For those of you who may be interested, the entire film can be seen on YouTube. The film stars American actor Van Johnson and six veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. If you watch it, you will find out what the Japanese word for “stupid”, “fool” or “idiot” is.

The phrase "go for broke" has its origins in Hawaiian pidgin English gambling parlance, meaning to wager everything on one roll of the dice in the game of craps.

The way they overscored Nathan and Vincent. OMG. I cant even.

It's nationals they always do. I feel bad that I can't even bring myself to watch US Nationals because my only option involves having to hear from Johnny and Tara about how Nathan is the greatest skater of all time (ugh). I probably wouldn't mind Nathan so much if it wasn't for the propaganda.

So Yuzu took triple the amount of painkillers than recommended in PYC and he took 1/3 of it for JNats. That means he took the normal amount for the latter and for me that was an excellent news, because that means the injury was much lighter at JNats.

But what an incredible feat that was his PYC win. He really did get to the top being as high as a kite on painkillers, with the help of medical tape, force of will and a healthy dose of prayers.

Dont even start with Johnny and Tara. I watched Project Runway. He was so mean.

I wouldnt mind Nathan at all but their propaganda is way too much for me to handle. And I think a lot of people think the same.

And the saddest think Nathan has two the most powerful federations behind him while JSC doesnt care. Let me end here bcuz I have a meltdown.

If you check the figure skating subreddit, you can find videos with Ben Agosto commentary. I don't know if that's better (probably) because I tend to tune out commentary when watching sports.

After years of being exposed to this kind of ridiculous hype, overscoring, and propaganda, I've gotten to a point where it doesn't even bother me anymore. I treat it like white noise.

I only focus on Yuzu and his skating and the joy and pleasure I get from watching him. I marvel at how obviously superior his performances are to anyone else. I'm simply grateful that he's still competing, improving, and gifting us with more extraordinary, wonderful programs and performances. Every moment I get to see him on the ice is precious to me. :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

Am I the only one who worries about Yuzu’s apparent chronic use of strong painkillers? I am not a doctor, but with the level of pain that Yuzu was experiencing at the time of the PyeongChang Olympics, I would speculate that only strong opioids would have allowed him to skate at his full capabilities at the time when you consider that he is feeling 8× his body weight on his right ankle each time he lands his jumps.

As a personal injury lawyer, I have seen a number of my clients become dependent upon strong opioids such as oxycodone in order to manage their severe pain. I am glad to see that Yuzu has reduced his painkiller intake to 1/3 of his dosage during the PyeongChang Olympics, although I am appalled that he had been taking three times the recommended dosage back then. From what he says, reducing his dosage to 1/3 means that he is still taking the maximum recommended dosage right now.

What concerns me is what he has been doing between PyeongChang and the present. He was still experiencing severe pain at PyeongChang. This did not magically disappear after the competition was over. I suspect that in order to practice, he would have had to take painkillers. So has he been taking these painkillers regularly since PyeongChang?

I am guessing that he has been taking strong painkillers in order to continue practicing the quad Axel. Can you imagine the force that he feels on his right ankle when he lands on it after attempting a quad Axel?

As @Melodie has expressed, I too am glad that Yuzu is only required to take 1/3 of the PyeongChang dosage which presumably means that his pain level is about a third of what it was during the PyeongChang Olympics.

I am happy for Nathan though. It seems like he found some mental stability which is important, even if you are not an athlete...FS is very mental sport and Pyeongchang is probably haunting him till this day.

Of course, he should have found that mental comfort. Imagine you prove yourself right over and over again on your smart strategies, maximize BV, while hitting the minimum for a good GOE and PCS in front of the judges. The mentality of knowing that as long as I don't make big mistake I will win (which means you have control over the result) is a huge plus going into a competition. This is the kind of confidence that Yuzu once had before PC.

For the 1/3 dosage at JNats, from the interview I read, the translated word is "normal" so that doesn't mean max recommended IMO. Also, we don't know for sure if he has been using painkillers chronically between PYC and the present. For sure he has to if he has injuries while competing, but when he is healthy, even while practicing the 4A, that should not be necessary, yes? IMO don't read too much into it (him revealing more horror stories about his PYC days) and don't worry too much (But we totally should worry if ever Blue Flame vol 3 is released LOL)

What worries me is what he did between PyeongChang and the present. He still suffered from severe pain in PyeongChang. It didn't magically disappear after the competition ended. I suspect that in order to practice he would have had to take pain relievers. So, is he taking these pain relievers regularly from PyeongChang?

I guess he took strong pain relievers in order to continue quad Axel. Can you imagine the force he feels on his right ankle when he lands on it after attempting an Axel quad?

Like @Melody expressed, I too am happy that Yuzu is only required to take a third of the dose of PyeongChang, which presumably means his pain level is about a third of what it was during the PyeongChang Olympics .

Good evening, last year at the beginning of February I was operated on on the right shoulder and the rotator cuff and I had an upper tendon which had come loose ??? and the surgeon nailed it to me on the humeral head and everything that touches the bones hurts a lot and I took strong painkillers with opium which had the power that I was completely in the fog and I didn't feel HS and it was 6 / days for 1 week and remove 1 each week and my boxes were counted and as a reinforcement I had 6 morphine sulfate capsules and secure prescription, because it is considered a narcotic    : no joke with that    and I ask myself the question: how did Yuzu not feel this fog and falling asleep like me ??? and how was he able to skate? and practice his 4A ..... (yes it's clear that his ankle feels all the weight of his body on landing) then, "maybe" that his analgesics are special for sports? and therefore you as a specialized lawyer, you know what you are talking about indeed ..... and, like you, I do not understand how he managed to overdose himself? and also "maybe"? that he takes light analgesics after the 2018 Olympic Games !!! Ibuprofen or paracetamol type (which I took at the end of treatment)

Okay a genuine question. Why doesn't Yuzu consider putting the 4A in Rondo instead of FS, or even one in each? Especially after the clownery of the US Nats scoring so far (which will for sure impact on bias of Beijing scoring in Nathan's favor) he really needs some way to overcome this technical scoring gap and unless he starts adding 4Lz or 4F back in I don't know how he's supposed to go about doing that
