Hi everyone, I am a newbie here (I just registered!)  I fell hard for Yuzu after seeing his SP in Pyeong Chang, and so I was really rooting for him during the FP.  Ever since then I discovered Planet Hanyu and so I have been catching up on this thread and watching many youtube videos (his skating and interviews) till the middle of the night!  His skating just touches my heart and to add to that he is so humble, polite, gentle, hardworking and smart, and cute!  The complete package.  I didn't really follow figure skating before, so it's been fun reading about this sport (all the jumps, BVs, scoring, GOE, PCS, the different skaters and their relationships).

I want to ask a few questions if it is okay -

  • I actually live in Toronto and so I am wondering if it would be okay to go to TCC and watch Yuzu practice?  I am not a member there though.  TCC is about 20 minutes drive from where I live.  I tried google and there is usually an "open practice" in August when he reveals the new programs for the season?
  • Are there any ice shows / competitions in Canada coming up?  I think there is a thread in here showing the schedule but I can't find it anymore.  I think there is the GPF in Vancouver in December, anything else?

Thanks a lot!

TCC does not allow people to go and watch practice, to respect the athletes who need peace and concentration! Regarding the 'open practice', I think it's only open for the press, not for 'normal people'. You could... try to get a job as a sports article writer/photographer and then try your luck with that, though! :peek:

Welcome to the Planet and have fun! I leave scaring you to other users

As @Murieleirum has said, TCC is an amazing place with 'no entry for outsiders' approach, which is to help skaters with pressure managing (In Brian's (paraphrased) words: we want a space where they can have a bad day and it will not be on every channel the next day.) With kind of following Yuzu has it's really a blessing, but again, if you want to become a sports photographer to get to the media day, we will definitely support you!

From competitions there is definitely Autumn Classic in September and Skate Canada somewhere in October-November, I'm not  knowledgable about North American ice shows though, so I hope people more friendly with skating calendar can help with that. Also, a bit off Planet, but check out the http://soyouwanttowatchfs.tumblr.com/ because they sometimes post schedules of different events and ways to watch if you cannot go to them^^

July is from 19 till 30, and the place is (I don't guarantee the correctness of the reading so it will be good for checking with Japanese speaking Satellites too) JR Nagoya Takashimaya 10th floor special assembly hall? I did check their homepage and it does seem to have an art gallery on the tenth floor, but I'm not fluent enough to provide more information, sorry orz.

Welcome :smiley-love017: There's the Stars on Ice featuring many Canadian skaters + Javier Fernandez coming soon in many Canadian cities. For competitions in Canada, the Skate Canada website has a calendar with all of the international competitions they host + national ones here: https://skatecanada.ca/event-schedule/

I want to study Japanese too (what better time than when we're inundated with Japanese media, LOL) buuuttt it's such a time commitment.. :tumblr_inline_mzx922J8H21r8msi5: and when you stop, you lose everything you've learned :tumblr_m9gck4P2Jf1qzckow:

OT

As long as you keep reading and watching, you won't lose much, and your vocabulary will continue to improve, too! Your conversation skills will probably go to heck, though.

Then what the hell motivation is there for me to become super rich enough to join TCC and sit in the sippy sippy area to watch practices? Toying with my life, here! :tumblr_inline_mfy930ntA01qid2nw:

All this talk makes me curious:

A lot of fans already take lots of photos of Hanyu and some even have professional cameras, well maybe at least one Fanyu will aspire to be a professional photographer. A whole bunch of magazine photographers seems to get access to Hanyu competition, pre-competition, and ice shows for photos (and Hanyu interacts with some of them). Does anyone know how this actually works? How do some photographers not attached to a certain magazine (is Sunao Noto attached?) get access? Or perhaps sometimes they do like fans and have to take from the seating area?

Like even FRIDAY who Hanyu will probably never give his time of day for got some photos of him. Maybe they bought some leftovers from other photographers.

This was pages ago but it deserves a proper thank you, so here we go: thank you @yude for sharing those bits from Yuzuru's new book :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw::thanks:

And I feel I don't thank enough all the translators and everyone posting stuff and sharing photos and videos and thoughts about Yuzuru, so here is a thank you to all of you too:snpeace:

Re: some (very sad) human beings acting like jerks towards people who never did them any harm

I was writing a longish (and quite sorrowful) post but now I'll just say that Yuzuru has the respect of the people he admires, he is loved by the people he cares for, he has his family, his friends and the support of many people, and many many reasons to be happy, and this is the only thing that matters:tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw::10742289::grouphug:

I'm such a pessimist most of the time, but Yuzuru makes me a believer :tumblr_inline_ncmifaymmi1rpglid:

And people like Yuzuru make me believe that human beings can be darn amazing. See, he turned my post into a tooth-rotting and squishy thingy :tumblr_inline_mm2wbaeqQM1qz4rgp:

@holina welcome!!!:tumblr_inline_n18qraikFP1qid2nw:

As others have already said, TCC is Yuzuru's safe haven and it's a good thing it will stay that way (tho I totally share your desire to go and see him:10636614:)

I take the chance to invite people lurking (I know you're there:winky:) join the fry, we have wild Yuzu and lots of squishiness and fun for you:peekapooh::peek::9:

tho of course take your time! I know I did, before I started posting (I confess my shallowness in enjoying too much all the yuzumoticons and other assorted emoji on this planet...I need to use them!):embSwan::kitty:

Some photographers will be freelancers on an agency or something and will get the press pass via the agency (ie. Getty) and then sell to whoever wants them, others will be hired by publications and will get press passes via the publications.

I had a...uh...semi-pro-ish camera (7D mark 2. I wanted the 5D mark 3 or 4 but...money) and I top grade lens (70-200 f2.8 L IS2, some of the pros had the same lens but they also had other kit like the 300mm lens etc) and a degree in photography but can't get the press passes because its a hard industry to break into and I haven't a clue how to. I'm quite happy being an enthusiastic hobbiest lol. It's not unheard of for publications to contact fans to purchase photos. It is more comon for news sites to just use photos they found on the internet without permission though

Demand skyrockets for sweets, masks and sports goods popularized by Japan’s Olympic athletes

A flu mask also attracted attention after it was worn by figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, who won gold in the men’s singles event at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

...

The 2018 version of the mask starts from ¥21,600. Although the product is unusually expensive for a flu mask, 2,000 people are currently on a waiting list to buy it. The company is unable to keep up with the pace of orders, even though workers are giving up their holidays to produce more masks.
