This actually got me thinking... I mean, we're happy that he's more open about his health but do you think had he not agreed to water down his layout we wouldn't even know about the leg pain? (In the end it was a good decision though... Thanks Brian.)

Maybe Jmedia finally realised that instead of pitting Yuzu against Shoma and vice versa, Japan is actually in a situation where they have the highest chance of getting medals in the men's field with 2 top contenders... At least I hope so... LOL... watch them do a rivalry narrative again once the gp series starts...

I don't think it's a good strategy. With the monster BV of Nathan, Boyang, and Shoma for the free everyone needs to have a clean-ish short to be a podium contender. The short is sort of an even playing field what with it just having 7 elements. They can backload but there's a maximum limit to what score they could get. And as we've seen with LGC, a minor mistake can get him into trouble with that program as it's able to disrupt the flow (apart from maybe gpf'16). And we know that the SP performance can affect the Free skate score sometimes. At this point it's too much of a risk. He needs to be at least in the top 3 post SP. Worlds'17 was a bit of an anomaly and I think if Javi had been clean-ish he would've won.
