General Skating Chat
rockstaryuzu replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Ottawa. My city. Which is actually doing quite well, pandemic-wise.* I just don't know if we'll be letting international travellers in by then. And the arena where SCI is being held is not the best, in terms of seating. The seats are crammed together. If SCI goes ahead, right now my bet is it'll be at half capacity or less. Anyway, China really had no option, what with the new outbreak in Beijing that started a couple weeks ago. So much for CoC. Lord knows what kind of a season we're going to have. *Numbers of new infections have been trending down for weeks, to the point where public health authorities are letting people visit their loved ones in old-age homes again - provided they can prove they test negative for COVID-19. Suddenly everyone's getting tested like mad...we will probably find a few more cases but nothing serious. And masks have just been made mandatory indoors, so hopefully things will go well from here on out.- 6,825 replies

He was shorter then. At least as far as I can tell, anyway. So fitting into the costume would be a big challenge.

Beauty! This is such a great interview in all aspects. It's cute how he thinks of the 3A as a helpful friend. . . . Only Zu...
-
There's an interview somewhere where Yuzu draws a pie graph of how he spends his day. I wish I could remember which one it was.

Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, his natural self seen by photographers
rockstaryuzu replied to sweetwater's topic in Translations
Thanks so much for the translation. It's really interesting to hear what the photographers have to say about Yuzu, because apart from Yuzu's team, they're probably the people who see him the most at competitions and they have this unique point of view that's one step closer than being a fan, but is still not in the inner circle. I'm thinking they really get to see Hanyu from both sides. -

That's the same weekend ACI is scheduled for, but as they're in two different countries, I wonder whether it means anything for ACI or not.- 6,825 replies

in honour of our favorite chocolate ad man: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Chocolate_Day (and you thought it was only Tanabata today) I know we've all seen this video before but it bears repeating:

Oh, I'm sure Jordan has more Skate Canada footage, but how much more does he have of Yuzu? But I do hope there's more. Also, about the *ahem* viewpoint .... ....yeah....why do you think I'm in need of resuscitation right now, after all?
-
......send help....a defibrillator and some smelling salts, please.... Jordan saved his best for last, eh? And I whole-heartedly agree with the sentiment.

It'll have to start with him posing for Instagram photos, though . He's a child of the social media times!

I don't know if any of you read Discworld, but lately I feel like Yuzu could use one of these: https://discworld.com/products/all-badges/i-still-atent-dead-badge/

and who could blame him
-
Actually, Tessa and Scott are the most decorated skaters in the world: 5 Olympic medals (3 Gold) in 3 Olympics, world record holders, 3x World champs, etc etc etc. Yuzu is the most decorated singles skater though, I believe. Definitely the most decorated currently competing.

Camden and Karen (I think? Not sure) promoting public health measures Just noticing how the mask draws attention to his gorgeous eyebrows...

About World's tix: I'm going to wait until I know if there'll be a season, first.

Oh my dear satellites, the last few pages of the forum are delivering the salt the way only we can! Cheers to all of you for the wit with which you have done so

He probably just did the video quickly without thinking too hard about it. I'm sure he's got other things to do

It's that harsh overhead light. It's kind of him to go along with this.

Reading that quote from Ari reveals something really important - he's basing his idea of these awards on something he doesn't understand. Ovechkin was famous before he got the MVP because hockey is BIG here. The awards didn't make it big - hockey got like that the hard way, by earning it's audience through playing the sport extremely well. AND by having games broadcast so that anyone with a TV can watch. Ari wants figure skaters to have Ovechkin-level fame? Then he should convince the ISU to have more and better televised competitions and to invest their money in developing good skaters, the world over. The glitz and the glam and the chanting crowds in Vegas don't come for free.
-
As far as the Awards show specifically goes, this is the most likely reason. When in doubt, follow the money, after all. The other reasons probably factor in more in things like scoring issues and so on.
-
@lynnidolz that 'evil genius thing' is exactly how outrage marketing works. They do something annoying or outrageous and it gets people talking. @sweetwater But Nekomasamune is cute! He deserves more traffic than ISU.
-
In all fairness, Nationals happened in the middle of a blizzard that made driving unsafe, but still, the numbers are very telling.
-
Hmm. Maybe, maybe not. I think it's a mistake to assume that the reason is because he's an Asian, specifically. That might be why, but it could also just be because he's not Russian or not American, which isn't the same thing. I mean, Nathan is also Asian. Yes, he's an American, but if the discrimination against Yuzu were only about race, then Nathan would also have the same trouble. I think it's mostly about not being from a country and/or skating federation that wields clout in the ISU. The two things are sort of similar, but not quite. In other words if the situation were reversed and a white guy were to be Japan's top skater, they'd still get no respect from the ISU.
