O am so glad - and right at the minute when he could use a bolster....

I think it's encouraging - though sad - that he is talking about the possibility of not making either, he has accepted it may not happen and can concentrate on Worlds. In 2014, remember, he gave everyone ulcers, grey or falling hairs and conniptions by taking his stubborn competitive drive to way past the point of obstinacy.... Do Not Trust Doctor Google. Seriously. My own doctor has muttered dire things about the number of patients who look up their own symptoms and decide they are dying before coming to see him and be told it's minor.

Does anyone know how the Japanese media and fans are taking it? I mean, we love him dearly, but his place in their hearts (especially Sendai's...) is probably on another level, I get the feeling only Mao Asada comes anywhere close in skating, and that baseballer is equally loved from sport in general. Also, what time is the medal ceremony? We may get a glimpse of how he is now the first shock and the adrenaline of the competition have worn off... if he does turn up, and I think he will if he feels at all up to it. But no blame if he and the team decide he needs a day to just recover from it all....

I know we are all in shock and grieving for how he has to suffer yet again, and how he must be feeling for at least the next few days (I cried watching the press conference) but can I enter a note of pride for him for what he did this competition? His combined score is still the third highest under the new system, beating out both of Shoma's so far and only 2-and-a-shade points under Nathan's Skate America one. And his free skate, with everyything that should have made for a meltdown, is in the top 10. Our boy is the greatest by a mile, not only because of the incredible heights he reaches when things are going well, but for what he can pull out from god knows what reserves when the skating gods lash out at him. It hurts that he has to, he doesn't deserve any of it, but my god, I am in awe of how he does when he has to.

I think also he and his choreographers (Shae for the FS especially) are extremely good at pacing it, to give the maximum breathing room (Seimei was a marvel for this, and that must have helped in the Olys). The cut in time has made that more of a challenge and I think all the skaters and their choreographers are on a learning curve they mostly didn't expect to make it work.

From what I gather it was a huge success... I am so so so glad. We miss him in the competitions though...

Lovely. I think that - as painful as watching the Olympics nearly slip through his fingers always is - it reminds me again that that free skate was a perfect example to me of why he is the champion of champions, the greatest. Because those two falls at the start must have felt like hammer blows, he must have realised he'd handed the gold to Patrick Chan with them, but unlike Patrick (or Nathan four years later) he gritted his teeth, didn't let go, and fought with everything he had to make the rest of the performance the very best he could. Even if he did think he couldn't possibly win - felt total despair, felt like he'd thrown away that perfect SP - he never gave in trying to win. It wasn't just that Patrick then blew his golden chance, it was that - when things started to go wrong for him - he cracked and got worse, pretty much did give in. And Yuzu didn't. And that made the difference. I just don't think Yuzuru gets enough credit for that.

Copyright is a complicated thing, and he's an artist by trade, I'd wager he'd know the rules better than we do. He may have gotten Yuzu's okay for all we know, it's not really our place to say. After all, he's unlikely to get even a fraction as much as much as that artist - was it last year? I don't know if it was ever stated that Yuzu gave permission for that either, but I assume he did.
