I also think it's a smart decision for Nathan to go for 7 quads, especially as he's aiming for the top of the Olympic podium, perhaps with plans to move on from this sport and pursue medicine/education, but I don't think it's a plan that endears his skating to more people who wish for more balanced programs from him. If he's not going for Marina Zoueva, who I think really plays up the classical aspect of him, I think a Jeffrey Buttle short would be good for him, but I hope Jeff saves the best for Yuzuru :s_wink

It will be boring, but he's seemed clear in interview that he's aiming for a gold medal and then an education so that's his best way of getting it. Can't say I'm looking forward to it.

I think judges and ISU should come together for once and make a statement: if Nathan's team will come up with a program composed only of quads and crossovers to gain speed for quads (a 7 quads program would be JUST that and nothing more), then the PCS should reflect the contents of the programs for real: close to zero.

I like Nathan, I don't have anything against him, but he probably doesn't realize that he doesn't understand figure skating at all, and he's trying to change the sport for... personal aspirations of winning a medal?

I don't think proving you can do 10 quads in 5 minutes is pushing the sport forward. Paganini did great, absurd, virtuosistic things on the violin, like sometimes playing the last tempo of his concerts on a single string. But he didn't do it because he couldn't play on the other strings. He could do everything. So Nathan's isn't even virtuosism.

7 quads won't bring him anything, especially when he is not landing them. It's not figure skating anymore. This is going to be a disaster

We don't know until we know. It's just going to come down to who delivers what on those two nights. I do prefer a good balance though honestly. I hated that Evan won without a quad. And I won't like if Nate wins with a jump exercise as a long program and not much else. I do like him, and I like his short the best compared to his long. I get that he's doing what he can do to win at all costs. And Raf knows good and well that as long as you deliver the tech then the PCS will be there. He gloated about some of Ashley's PCS, like skating skills and transitions. She scores well there despite not doing much, so he doesn't bother with them for her.

It's so... cynical. Load up on quads and then leave. Although I don't know why I'm reacting so much against someone setting clear life goals and pursuing them. That's not a bad thing to do, it's a good thing. I guess it's because it feels like the audience is irrelevant, if he moves on without showing his full potential. But maybe that is his full potential, and despite the press, he would never be an artist. I like Murieleirum's Paganini analogy.

Nathan is looking at colleges near his training rink, though. I'm not sure he is planning on just packing up and leaving after the Olympics, but it can depend on many factors: whether he wins OGM, whether he is motivated after, whether his courses are too heavy a workload for easy reconciliation with FS. We do know he has clear goals for himself in terms of a college education but I suspect even he doesn't know if he has clear goals in terms of FS as well.

If he's planning to do medicine, which I think he mentioned in interview, it would be hard to do both- Zonderland managed to be an OG HB specialist and a medical student so I suppose it's possible. I wouldn't criticise him for aiming for PC then r****ment - good to have goals beyond OG - just a pity that he seems to be losing interest in expanding his abilities on the ice.

PS I didn't realise you automatically asterisk out the fatal word!!!

7 quads Nathan is very worried about me. I just think figure skating is dying. It will be "ice skating" and make a separate competition for it. Where's the place for art and presentation?

Figure skating is certainly on life support in the US. The reviews circulating online about Stars on Ice are seriously depressing. Empty seats, people leaving at intermission. And all the reports about Gracie are very disturbing. From what I read over at FSUniverse, she even has problems staying in sync with the other skaters during group numbers. Very sad for her and very sad for the audience who has to witness that.
