Watching with casuals is a bit exhausting since basically to them it's fall or don't fall and I'm like :13877886:. How. To. Explain.....

Throw in the dang U.S. PR machine and oh gosh it's impossible

That's why I prefer to watch it by myself. It takes mee too much energy to explain that there is so much more to Figure Skating than one freaking fall of one successfully completed jump. Better be here and cpmunicate with people who are a bit more invested  to sksting than a casual viewer.

Maybe try explain it terms of difficulty? That's what worked for me lol

Both Rizzo and Adam should have been slightly ahead of Kolyada, who didn't perform that program at all. I'm especially sad about Rizzo's scores. Lakernik sure found some ways to deduct points of his clean skate ... and 10 points less in PCS than Kolyada? I don't think so ...

but Adam ahead of Chan? with that empty program? in what world? If Boyang skated a program this empty, people would be all over the place about his 'artistry'

I am impressed with the TP, they learned how to call URs in one day

that's because Lakernik is in the tech panel - of course he would call Canadian's UR's. And he also made sure that Rizzo wouldn't place above Kolyada as well.

Lakernik was also in the tech panel in Sochi, when Adelina's flutz was overlooked and yuna's step sequence got a level less than Adelina's. How can he be in the tech panel of the olympics again?? The odds for that is ridiculous.

Also so ridiculous that they called Kaori and Carolina's UR but didn't give Mirai a single UR call

Sorry but where did you find this?

The tech panel for men events (TE and single) as far as i know is this: RHEE Chihee (referee), LOCATELLI Raffaella, KOSTIN Konstantin, OLAVARRIETA Ricardo. These are also the persons mentioned some time ago from Ambesi.

Tech panel for ladies (TE and singles) was this: PFISTER Beatrice (referee), LYNCH Susan, CHUNG Jae-Eun, MARTYNOV Evgeny.

I think that Lakernik was present at these events just as ISU official (vice-president for figure skating).

really? I heard the announcer introducing his name at the beginning of the men's SP and he was not one of the 9 judges, so I thought that he was part of the tech panel. If you're right, I'm so glad he isn't because like I said, I was really taken aback by the odds of this happening...

Yes, I heard also, but I think that was among the names of ISU officials indeed.

These are the panel of judges and TC panel in ISU pages:

So: fingers crossed for all the upcoming events :fourleafclover:!

Try explaining via the jump difficult as @randomanon suggests. That's the only thing that has worked for me, even if just partially. It's been crazy since last night especially, what with Rippon, and it's just not possible to explain the intricacies of this sport to someone who in essence, doesn't actually care. Which is why I say just that tbh. Maybe more politely

I never thought I have to defend Patrick's skating skills and edges from people in a million years... But here I am, having to tell people while Adam's program is very nice, his skating skills as well as his difficulty aren't up to par compared to Patrick's. (I really like how one insisted their skating skills are comparable...) It is also very funny to see people attacking Patrick for jumping his two quads, thus winning over Adam, when he himself spoke out against the quads. I wonder how they are going to react to Nathan and Vincent and their quads or when they win over skaters with clean programs but no or one quad.

Upon reflection, I can empathize with the casuals' confusion. Take snowboarding. It's a subjectively judged sport with degree of difficulty considerations. But a fall takes you out of it. I liked Austrian slopestyle snowboarder Ana Gasser best. Her tricks were clearly the hardest. But she didn't podium because she wasn't clean. Figure skating rules might be pretty unique right now. My friend could tell there was something special about Patrick though.

They really need to include more fancam-type wide shots to make the ice coverage issue more clear. The commentators for halfpipe are able to explain amplitude, but it is also visible in how high the competitors get relative to the wall. Then afterwards stats for max and average trick height are displayed. It gives you an understanding of why one competitor is better than another. We need the enhanced tech box instead of the dumb colored squares.

Hopefully Someone will show the complete package in the individual and then everything will become clear. A clean or almost clean program with quads is more impressive than one without. We simply haven't seen any great performances from the men yet. Adam was good but safe—he is capable of being even more exciting and inspiring than he was here. I hope his shoulder will allow him to show a Rippon lutz.

I really miss that box - it was only there for a short while but it was very easy to say ' yes he fell, that's why there's a deduction and the box is red, but it was a difficult jump so you start at a higher figure' etc.  (Or hopefully you don't have to say that but you all know what I mean).  Where does the traffic light system come from?

Adam's skating is nice and he has good hand movements, but in terms of TR and overall speed he is far from the best (I find Jason much better in that aspect)

Maybe the root of all evil NBC?

Anyway, I remember it appearing in gymnastics first, where I also find it stupid.

The NBC. They have the same during US Nats.

I have a funny feeling they opt to this one because it is not as distracting or info-filled as the Japanese style TES box.

Tho, if you have an app, which I am not entirely sure what, you can choose to watch in split screen of 3: the performance, the full list of elements and their score as they happen, and the coach reaction. Anyone know what im trying to describe here?
