If you have an education system that doesn't work mostly on multiple choice questions, I found a comparison that helps most people: If you're working on a difficult calculus problem and you get it right until you're through 80% of the steps, but then make a mistake and get the answer itself wrong, you will still get credit for the 80% you got right. You'll get deductions for getting the rest and the final answer wrong, but it doesn't negate the 80% you did get right. Now somebody else might have chosen to instead do a quadratic equation that's relatively simpler, and they might do it perfectly. But they could still very well get less than you did because your calculus problem was worth much more to begin with.

We have an education and exam system where for math, each step is considered and counted, and missing steps even with the correct answer will get you a wee bit of a deduction. So this has worked well for me to explain why a fall on a quad gets more points than a perfectly executed double axel. I'm quite proud of myself for having come up with something that they seem to understand, tbh.
