一隅を照らす。これ則ち国宝なり。最澄.

(ichi-guuwo terasu. koresunawachi kokuhounari. Saicho)

"Shining a light in one corner.  This is indeed a national treasure."   A quote from the writings of the Buddhist monk Saicho.

In Japan and across the world, we are mourning the passing of Dr. Nakamura who dedicated for more than 30 years of his life in Afghanistan - to serve the people and the community there.  He was truly a hero a man of deep compassion and humility, who dedicated his life for the people of Afghanistan.

His favorite saying was 一隅を照らす - which aptly describes the actions of this humble man, whose courageous efforts gave so much hope to the communities he served.  His actions even brought back former fighers from the battlefield to take part in rebuilding the land and creating a new life for their children. He did not try to take part in big World Bank conferences to trumpet how much money he collected or how many wells he had dug. Instead he kept his head down and worked alongside the people, and through his modest actions he spread compassion and generosity in a community that had been devastated by decades of war and brutal violence.

Taking care of the small things immediately around you and shining a tiny bit of light in the small corner of our world - this is how we can spread the circle of compassion.  For me, Yuzu's greatest asset is not his amazing athleticism or artistic talent but his adherence to 一隅照: he has continued to pay attention to those immediately around him and give kindness and compassion no matter what he is going through, and as he is maturing these values appear to be growing stronger within him. Of course, he loves to be the centre of attention as a skater and a performer, but his acts of generosity are carried out behind the scenes, outside of the glare of media and fandom - even paying attention to the needs of the media when they badger him and showing no resentment or irritation but instead showing generosity by answering their questions with respect and care, even the unpleasant ones; or giving kind words to Alina after the galal, or by extending friendship to an autistic child in his class who was feeling ostracized by others... I was a very spoiled and egostistical child and he puts me to shame when I reflect on my own selfish actions.  His actions motivate me to strive to be more understanding and compassionate towards the feelings of those around me, and not be swept in by the storm of hatred swirling around us in this tempestuous world.

Dr. Nakamura was and will continue to be a great role model, truly a national treasure.  I can only wish Yuzu to carry that light forward...

What a beautiful man and a beautiful tribute. Thank you for lifting up this hero and pointing out how Yuzu shares some of the same virtues.

Re: the Ph*l interview, and why Ghislain was chosen

Spoiler

I have read (and kinda made ring a bell in my foggy memory) that Yuzu also has said that he knew Brian would be busy in gpf week and that's why he himself picked Ghislain. Perfectly understandable, since Brian runs whole place there in Toronto, so to say. I am sure he has many obligations and it's natural to split tasks with rest of the team. Not unexpected Tracy was the one who went with Jason, and Ghislain being jump specialist would probably come in handy to Zu, since he was already toying with the idea of adding 4Lz... so I was perfectly satisfied with Yuzu's explanation of why Brian wasn't in gpf.

Now here Brian is, making it sound as if choice came to him, to all of them, as a surprise... tbh, he might have had the best intentions when giving this interview, but the whole article feels like a giant and unnecessary stirring things up again after Ghislain's interviews had explained everything and the fandom at large was back again in the I❤TCC mood

Which imo is the mood most people in the fandom has 99% of the times and the remaining 1% mostly happens, surprise surprise, after Brian speaks to media.

sorry, but I don't think it's all fault of overprotective fans overreacting and reading too much in Brian's actions 'cause Brian does have a history of mildly-whattheheck?statements when it comes to his PR for Yuzu.

And while people running after Brian on his account wasn't good AT ALL,* any drama would have been easily prevented if Brian had spent half a sentence to acknowledge the unusual situation in gpf. Literally everyone, not only fans but media too, was wondering what was happening and of course he knew there were being issues. The utter silence on TCC part was nerve-wracking and it was strange.

One would think Brian was media-savvy enough to know people expected him to address the situation or just leave a wish of good luck for the sp to his skater who was in Turin without a coach in such an important comp... And no, it doesn't matter if Brian had a private call with Yuzuru himself and told him directly everything he needed to say, in this era what you do on sns and what you say to media is important, official statement are important. It would have taken him literally one minute, and then he could have gone on without a prob with the rest of his many many commitments

(*disclaimer: since I have not been on Brian's insta I have no idea what was actually said, I only read fans disagreeing with what was happening)

Ngl, I am in the camp that feels Yuzu has grown a lot closer to Ghislain on a personal level and tbh I wouldn't even be surprised (nor worried) if one day Ghislain became even Yuzu's main coach (tbh I was almost expecting that when Zhenya and Jason moved to TCC), but I am pretty sure Yuzu values Brian's contribute to his training a lot and I am sure he feels bad for the social media attack Brian endured. I am sure there is no whatsoever distrust on Yuzu's part and I like to think the same goes for Brian, he must know Yuzu too well now.

Still, this new interview to Ph*l feels like stirring more drama and as I said I don't like that contradicts what Yuzu said...

Uh sorry for having been a ghost in gpf threads and failing to properly comment on the whole thing, I am still struggling to properly put my feelings into words. And I still need to finish unpacking LMAO not to talk sorting through pics and vids

Oh, and I miss Yuzu, but I guess that's hardly new and I bet I am not the only one here 😅

Anyway watching Zu go for the 4A was an EXPERIENCE even if he was jumping it like at the opposite side (but he nyoomed along my side of the rink when picking speed for it OMG I should have recorded it OMG just rememberd it I haven't even checked if I really got it😱😱😱) and 4Lo was beauty everything was beauty 4Lz is beauty beauty beauty and was in my side of the arena omg and FS 4T combos too and the most gorgeous twizzles 3A too oh and I love Swanyu, all of it/him I mean everything truly:tumblr_inline_mzx8t1Yuvn1r8msi5:

Sorry bye :dpooh:

Will Yuzu ever go for a 4F?

The Master of Chaos said in the GPF press con that his dream program has all 6 quads (paraphrasing) so.... everyone hold your breath another year or so.

ALSO: thank you everyone for coming to my assistance in recalling Shoma's and Nathan's quads. I knew there'd be a bunch among us who'd know the details <3

Thinking about Yuzu's quad arsenal, he's only achieved longterm stability on two: 4T and 4S (and, as we've seen to our dismay, even those can act up on occasion).

At the time of his injury at NHK '17, 4 Lo was sometimes gorgeous but sometimes a how-the-hell-did-he-save-that? kind of affair. And he had just begun to tame 4Lz when that snake bit him bad.

Since that time, he's spent half of each season off the ice or clawing his way back into competitive shape. So as of today, he's still trying to get on a truly solid footing with 4Lo and 4Lz while also training 4A, 5T and, apparently, the occasional 4F. Not to mention flourishes like 4T-Eu-3F and 3A-3A.

Plus, he's altering the shape of his body by building muscle mass, which is bound to affect his jumps in complex ways. And he can't train as intensely as he used to for fear of injury.

No wonder that Nathan, at the last press conference, gave him a look that subtly said: "I admire you, but you're bat-shit crazy!"

As are we fanyus, I suppose. But what a beautiful madness!

Seriously. I don't expect JSF to stand up for Yuzuru because they never did.

But what in the world is stopping the TCC coaching team from speaking up about how terribly underscored he is???? It's been happening for so long...

Why won't BO, TW or Briand protest about his lowballed GOE, low PCs and phantom URs? or about the generous scores other federations' skaters are receiving?

I mean they do pride themselves on teaching good skating skills (fairly so), those lower SS scores are a disrespect to their work as coaches too.

I do not get it. Any other coach would call out the judges and publicly make a statement asking for  fairness for their student in this situation.

Sometimes, in the world of figure skating, if you protest too much about something,  there is a backlash against your skater...  it is a judged sport, those judging don't want to be criticized very much and can get defensive... and it turns out even worse for your skater. Tthis has gone on since I started watching decades ago... so you have to pick your moments, your words, do it behind the scenes etc...  yes, some Feds can get away with bold pronouncements  (the big, powerful ones), but not everyone.

Because it's hyper risky so they don't want to make a harm considering they don't have such a power and connections to play it like RusFed. But I definitely don't think that they do nothing. They do opposite - take every occasion to say how unique Yuzu is, how great his skating skills and transitions are etc. They use positive narration to play (what I personally appreciate). For example, in my opinnion, Tracy did an amazing job at Skate Canada with her commentary.

Maybe Yuzuru doesn't want them to, because it would look like he himself is complaining. We know he has people waiting eagerly for any reason to attack his character and call him a whiner, and a fed that probably won't do anything to back him up if he chooses to open himself up to criticism. He is the kind of athlete who would not want his integrity called into question in any way, even if the result is a loss.

However, TCC does actually sometimes call things out in a roundabout way, via TSL's TCC mole Doug Haw. If Doug is on, or if the guys say "we got a bunch of texts from Doug Haw after the men's event and....." pay attention to what Doug will and won't say re: Yuzu, his training and coaches, and his rivals. Sometimes what Doug says is what Brian wants to say.
