Most Canadians say "sorry" by saying it like 'sore' as in cold 'sore'. Americans often say it like 'saw'. With saw  being said like, awwwww, or short accent 'o'. Hard to explain knowing there are other accents that say 'saw' differently than North Americans....

Right. As in the U.K. saw and sore are pronounced the same way in RP... but I get you!!!

Over-pronouncing, that's it! That's the thing where you see him working his lower jaw a lot and his head bobbing to every word he manages to form and utter. It's a whole process you can see.

And no I don't mean he's hard to understand. Not at all. Because he doesn't speak in Japanese phonetics, it sounds pretty natural (when he finally manages to say the words) so there's really no trouble at all *but*. But when his words run together like they did in that documentary, it gets hard to make out. What he does at press cons and what he was trying to do there are two very different things. In the documentary, he was also attempting to say deeper things and not about himself so I guess that's where the speed of his brain and his limitations in the English language got the better of him. I have no trouble understanding him most of the time but there, I could only tell it was English but the words were too garbled for me to properly make out without straining myself to both listen and decipher (and wishing I could understand Spanish so I could at least read the subtitles). It wasn't super hard, no, but it wasn't easy like it usually is with him either. It's really only there I had trouble so it could very well just be me *shrug*.

No it's not just you, he does say things kind of muffled. Maybe a lack of confidence in English thing. I'm also super used to hearing Asian-accented English so I can decipher him pretty well.

oh that's right!  now that you mentioned it, i notice it a lot in my english professors!

That they tend to pronounce 'sorry' with a more open sound than the one existing in British or Canadian English?

I prefer Yuzu speaking japanese, he has a very gentle and soothing voice.

I enjoy that thing he does to add stress where his voice goes hella squeaky lmaoooo

Also I am so confused by british vs canadian vs american 'sorry'

I say 'sorry' with a short 'o' sound. like...'Orange' -> 'SOrry'

Canadians say 'Sorry' with an 'or' sound? s-or-ry?

Americans say with an 'aw' sound? s-aw-ry?

ew. that's ugly. ew.

barging in to say that I've watched the interview and read the translation (feeling bad for being so late), and I was so relieved that I've actually shed a few tears. :tumblr_inline_n2pje3s3EO1qdlkyg:

Of course Yuzuru looks somber but it's ok (better that than those heartbreaking smiles in Boston:tumblr_m7etfqA8wS1qb1380:). What's happened to him was likely an athlete's worst nightmare (ok, I'm being a bit melodramatic here. Of curse there can be much worse things, but this one was still pretty bad): coming into a competition well conditioned, physically and mentally prepared, with everyone expecting him to win by a landslide and then s**t happens and screws up all his careful planning for the season.:banginghead:

How awful it must have been for him (and how angry at himself he must have felt:tumblr_inline_ncmif7esGm1rpglid: and still feeling), but I know he'll get stronger. I hope he won't rush and he will take care of himself.

So glad Yuzuru has at least a chance to be ready for Nats (though more s**t can always happen. Praying hard for him, may he have a healthy body, a steady mind and a strong heart)

I see talks about beard and moustache and Yuzu's english but I have no idea of what's going on. I'll go and catch up with the thread now:POOH:

also, just a lil zodiac reading for yuzu.

you are envied by many and they may try to harm you directly or indirectly. prone to accidents and negative feelings. You may encounter some obstacles before you can execute your plan. However, if you use your wisdom to remove the problems, you will see a wide open path. Many painful situations will forge character and eventually misfortune will dry up. years of thinking and hard work will bear fruit. you will overcome anxieties and doubts, and grow.

Favourable time of the year 2018: February (Olympics), march (worlds) and June.

they pronounce "saw" and "sore" almost identically

the vowels are more long/stretched compared to american english

american english "saw" and "sore" are very different

the R sounds and T sounds are also different

I know, I had extensive classes of phonetics at university when all these subtleties were hammered into my head... :) quite a lot of sounds are different in British and American accents. :)

I try teaching my students to identify different British accents now - and that's a gargantuan task!

Lol, these 20+ pages I woke up to have been quite the ride, from relief to depression to ESL...

My thoughts on the video, yes he looks dubdued, but still I think his mind is in the right place. I think (hope) he will be fine by Nationals. And brilliant at the Olympics.
