He's just really into his performances (whether solo or group). You can usually spot him in a group number because he's so extraTM

My theory is that if you start winning enough as a novice then you start training for a SP as well. Yuzu had an SP when as a novice he competed against juniors. You can follow his novice/junior competitions here...

The purple was JButt's idea because with the white costume all we see when he's on the ice was a floating head

I think it's fine if it's not forced... Wakaba already has a maturity to her performance but it's because of something innate and not something that she thought she would have to do. I think this was partially the reason for D.Wilson choosing Libertango for Mai - to bring out her maturity (whatever that means). With Marin as well - her SP was originally a tango as well but they soon realised that it's really not a vehicle for her to show 'maturity' which she really doesn't need to do at 16. I think finding the balance and what strengths you have is key. This applies to Juniors as well. While I love and appreciate Trusova as a technical skater and performer, I still cringe at a 13 yo skating to Big Spender (even though she pulls it off). And then there's Eun Soo's costumes. Going on topic for TJ ladies, Moa at 13 does a great tango and is very mature in her performance. In the end, I think my gripe is that 'maturity' is rewarded more than 'youth' when it comes to performance and it forces the ladies to have to choose a program they might not entirely be comfortable with just to show the judges that they are 'mature'. Which may or may not work in their favour.

This is what always annoys me with the ladies' field (and continues to do so). At 15-16-17 years old, these girls are teenagers. Let them be teenagers and have fun and youthful programs! Last year, some criticised Mai's Cinderella as 'juniorish' but I actually found it age appropriate. Unfortunately, judges seem to appreciate a 'mature' performance more and that's why we get an abundance of tangos in the ladies when they want to be thought of as mature because apparently skating to tango/latin equals maturity. Showing maturity doesn't always equals a better performance.

I agree. I remember the fluff pieces and in the documentary "Future of Tohoku" it was emphasized that NHK 2010 will be the first time he would try the 4T in competition. It was very dramatic as well because prior to the competition his had a low percentage of landing it in practice.

Hahaha.. this one is when he performed Change at the 2009 Medalist on Ice (no video that I can find). I think his costume for Change has always been some sort of weird graphic tee (although I did like the 2014 version).

Tatsuki's dramatic but it's more words than actions (except when he's skating) with him and Yuzu... they kept shading each other during media interviews /LOL/. I'm not holding out hope for Shoma actually, I don't think it's in his nature but I'm glad that he indulges Yuzu. I'm gonna be emo here a moment but Yuzu became a senior so early that his 'contemporaries' retired during his career (Dai, Taka, Nobu, Tatsuki). Most of the people he competed with as a junior retired as well (Gachinski, Nan Song, Nakamura) or are older than him (Rippon, Brezina, D10). Everyone from team Japan that he competed together with at Sochi has retired except for Chris Reed. So when he talked about being lonely I think this was part of it. I do think he'd fit in well with Team China actually. He gets along well with Hannie, seems to adore Boyang, and he got himself a personal lifter with XinYu.

@SuzyQ Thank you for the translation!

Well... last quad (2010 to 2014) Yuzu had dorky sempais like Nobu, Taka, and Dai. Even Tatsuki as well... as 'serious' as he was they were really funny and kept on shading each other /LOL/. After they all retired /sob/ he really doesn't have anyone to play with anymore. You can kinda get a glimpse sometimes at galas like at 2015 gpf (machida air guitar and slide?) but nobody else there seem to get it/him. Shoma prolly recognised what he was doing but you know he's too embarrassed to be extra. That's why I love it when Misha is in the same competition as him... and then you get Keiji and Ryuju at NHK'16 but they just basically let him do what he wants /LOL/.

It's from a bit they did at Friends on Ice 2011. The culprit is Yamato Tamura. He was dressed in drag, played Gelsomina, and skated to La Strada with Daisuke Takahashi. (No vids of the duet unfortunately - they're gone from youtube). But here's the main culprit: Also, near the end of this vid showing Yuzu's performance, they had the jump battle and you can see the lipstick marks on Yuzu, Dai, and Taka. Yamato tormenting TJ men since 2010 (and who knows how much earlier) This is why I can never take him seriously (even if he's now a respectable coach)... ETA: Not the La Strada duet but clips with Senior Kozuka as well

That's probably it. It's her work but it's not her original idea/design so she might not feel comfortable putting it out as her body of work. Reading the translation of her design for Shoma's Turandot vs Yuzu's Seimei is very telling. In the end, most people still know that she made his costume so she still gets the publicity.

Kumamon needs to step up...

RE: POTO 2. - I feel that while she has her own trademark design/aesthetic, she also knows enough about Yuzu's to make a costume that satisfies his requirements. This is just based on looking at all the costumes she displays in her portfolio. Most of the pieces have something that ties them together (intricate designs and beadworks) but Yuzu's costumes doesn't really 'fit' with any of them.

So there were bugs on the ice at Skate America.... if Yuzu were there...

Maybe how it was translated seemed a bit harsh (or maybe the wording? not liking/enjoying practice or training VS being lazy has a bit of a different feel to it). I think of Hamada as a great coach and she obviously cares a lot about all her skaters. I do love how she scolded media though.
