Pffft, c'mon, it did look a bit crass (though calling it x-rated is ridiculous) but, more importantly, as they said, it wasn't "asthetically pleasing." I wouldn't call it an elegant pose, that's for sure. Still incredibly impressive, though! I'm sure whatever they replace it with will be just as good.

I think it's difficult for an artistical and athletic performance that deals with themes such as love, lust, betrayal, and passion to be 'crass' because it conveys exactly those themes. If we don't give the image/thought of sexual love the permission to be part of an artistical expression, then the paintings, drawings of the great artists of the past, containing sexual scenes or even just a hint of it, would be considered crass as well. 

Considering vulgar the image of a sexual union between two bodies is prudery at best. Sorry if I sound blunt, but I'm passionate about this subject. 

 

For me, it was asthetically pleasing, AND elegant, but most of all meaningfull, different from the same images of love that we are subjected to in ice dance.

It's not love and sex but lack of sensitivity that makes something crass, and I don't think you can put an ice dance couple who are known for being incredibly flashy in the same category as great artists of the past. Perhaps our ideals of elegance are different but it's not a matter of prudishness. I also think it's a mistake to look at these great artists of the past without a hint of suspicion as to the motives of some of them. Just because a naked woman is painted with great skill doesn't mean it's not objectifying.

 

(Also, from your argument, it seems you might interpret that lift in an x-rated way yourself. I don't think it was intended to be.)

I don't want to go off topic so I'll just reply by saying that, for me, it's not the lift that's lacking sensitivity, but it's some people's perception of it that's lacking sensitivity.
