False alarm. They're still likely to attend the Opening Ceremony on the 9th in freezing cold.

At least shoma stated he wouldn't appear on opening ceremony. I think the rest is the same, at least in jaJapanese figure skating field.  The coldness of Pyongyang is at dangerous level and there are so many horrible reports so far.  opening ceremony will be held at night in no ceiling arena under the coldness like Siberia. Noro Virus, influenza...What's more, they have to stay about for four years including two hours of ceremony because of security.  I really worry about tessa and scot, they are flag holders usually athletes enter in alphabetical order, so canada is early.  

Re: P/C not taking part into TE

I see both cons and pros for them. If they  had skated and lost to V/M in the SD they could have lost the momentum they built through the season, but now, maybe, judges might appreciate V/M's commitment to the team event (and be blown away by their SD tho of course the panels are different, but V/M can potentially get a WR and imo it would weight on the individual event)

But still, it's their call and they have their reasons and I'm crossing my fingers they won't have last time jitters.

I think France could actually be relieved that it won't qualify for TE free (unless meltdowns happen)... this way J/C can be spared the team even free skate. With P/C doing the SD France had some chances, and I would have really hated if Vanessa and Morgan had to kill themselves for the TE when, only a few days later, they have their individual SP and FS back to back (darn competition schedule)

 

tbh I'd be relieved if S/M did like P/C and Sui/Han and skipped the TE, too. They skipped Euros in part because of Bruno's back problems  tho maybe Bruno could benefit from an olyimpic debut prior of the event where he and Aliona are gunning for the gold)

 

As for Russia OAR, S/K not being there makes things harder for them in pairs. I'm sad and still kind of stunned that Stolbova/Klimov aren't in Pyeongchang And today is Ksenia's birthday

I'll miss them so much (and S/B's low twizzles...and their SD, I liked it a lot)

 

RE: TE men SP we'll have our Shoma vs. Nathan showdown... if Nathan leaves out the Lz, I predict Shoma to be ahead

Anyway, I want to see Misha and Patrick do well! In the TE I'm rooting for Russia OAR and Canada

so no more meltdowns please

I worry about all the athletes who are going to attend (and the audience too)

true, they are winter sports athletes, so they are used to the cold, but they are also used to be moving while in the cold and with all those reporst of flu and norovirus this isn't going to bode well

(and now I'll kindly remove my pessimistic ass out of this thread)

 

ETA: I've just realized Italy has a good shot at qualifying for the free!

Now that's something I'd like

Only Caro has a realistic shot at individuals and she can skate the SP only, which is her strongest program imo, so not too much stress for her. Matteo would survive... somehow (he's done lots of close competitions in the first half of the season so I think he can pull it off)

 

Shoma's practice! Nobu and Daisuke Takahashi are there, too!! 

Wow. I don't even dare watch Shoma's practice vids, even though it's not live (and since I haven't come across any posts anywhere that says he broke an ankle, I assume the practice went well enough). 

I may have a serious problem dealing with the nerves these Olympics... 

I must say, I love Shoma's new hairdo ...
