Olympic court: Valieva will testify in doping case hearing
AP

Quote

Figure skater Kamila Valieva will testify by video at an appeal hearing Sunday that will decide if the 15-year-old Russian star can still compete at the Beijing OIympics.

Just 30 minutes ahead of the hearing’s start, Court of Arbitration for Sport director general Matthieu Reeb said Valieva was scheduled to speak by video to the panel. Reeb said the judges would have a Russian translator.

Three CAS judges will hear arguments in a closed-door session in a conference room at a Beijing hotel. Lawyers and officials for the parties are connecting to the case in the Winter Games host city and from Switzerland.

Reeb said the verdict is expect to be announced in Beijing on Monday afternoon.

This says Yuzu will appear in the Gala on 20th - maybe he'll confirm this tomorrow. (that's the headline)

Further down the article it says he is scheduled to appear, so who knows! Maybe he'll tell us tomorrow

To be honest I will not be surprised if they still let Kamila compete. There's so much confusion going on, but regardless, her reputation (and Eteri's) are damaged. If Kamila (or even Anna and Sasha) podium no one is going to take them seriously anymore. Most casual viewers who've heard about the doping will believe they're all guilty and don't deserve their medals.

It's unfair to the girls but I don't think Kamila competing with all this  negative press and Anna supposedly skating with an injury is not going to do them any favors in the long run.

Gonna be weird either way, if Kamila competes and if she isn't... But why would they really let her compete... Doping is doping, it's seriously weird :/ If it was a skater from small fed it' wouldn't even by any doubts...

I don't even see what Yuzu had to do with NC being unpopular in China. In the article itself they list the reasons China doesn't like him and it has nothing to do with Yuzu or even skating. He made bad impressions by his own choices. It is his fault things turned they way they did. Him winning a gold medal won't change anything.

Eh, I mean a big part of the reason NC is unpopular is because Yuzu is extremely popular and Cfanyus aren't any more fond of Nathan than we are. Then there's a bunch of political stuff that happened because US media decided it had to pressure him to answer questions on politics that made things even worse for him.

What's annoying about the article is that it implies that Chinese media is focusing on Yuzu because they're snubbing Nathan for political reasons, when in actuality the entire world's media is focusing on Yuzu because Yuzu just draws that much more interest. And Chinese fans liking Yuzu has nothing whatsoever to do with politics--at most we could maybe say Chinese state media is taking advantage of some of the love to encourage more positive China-Japan relations, which I don't think can be considered a bad thing.

Yuzuru has nothing to do with the fact that people don't like NC. Chinese people love the spirit that Yuzuru treating FS not just as a sport but also art and dream and something to fight for. NC believes that FS is a sport, a competition, men should have more manhood. Therefore there's no need to be emotional, nicely dressed or be beautiful. Most of the Chinese treat FS as art and don't like the rude way of doing FS. Apart from that, NC also chose some forbidden music as the background music of his show that CCTV has to cut the Olympic live. NC has a Chinese origin but has publicly provoked Chinese people and  Chinese culture many times.

I guess it's just Chinese people love Yuzuru's show too much. All the journalists run for interviewing Yuzuru instead of the gold medal winner NC, it made NC fans mad...

I think they're just salty that Yuzu is getting all the attention that Nate is not. What they also don't seem to understand is that Chinese people and media preferring Yuzu by far is because of his skating, his character, and the person he is. Even by state media, Yuzu is seen as a role model and someone to aspire to. And he is Japanese... especially considering the difficult relationship between China and Japan because of historical reasons, Yuzu's popularity is astonishing. To be honest, I would've never thought it possible that a Japanese person could be so popular and openly loved and admired in China. This is actually a miracle by itself.

Are you Chinese? If not, I'm not sure why you're telling me what Chinese people think and feel, considering I am Chinese and lurk Chinese figure skating forums. I think it's naive to say that people being huge fans of Yuzuru has nothing to do with them not liking NC. Isn't part of the reason we don't like NC because of his unfairly inflated scores and the obstacle they represent to Yuzu? If I weren't a fan of Yuzu, I would hardly care about NC enough to bother complaining about him. I probably wouldn't even know who he was, since Yuzu got me into figure skating in the first place.

The same journalists who are saying that Chinese media are snubbing Nate because of political reasons don't seem to notice how extraordinary it is that Chinese people and media are so openly supportive of Yuzu despite him being a Japanese skater. I think they just don't get why Chinese people dislike a gold medalist with Chinese origin and prefer a 4th ranking skater instead.

If it were really just about politics (or ethnicity), then Japanese athletes would be among the least popular in China because of political and historical reasons. But with Yuzu, that's obviously not the case, quite the opposite. He's even much more popular than Chinese athletes. What Yuzu means to people around the world overcomes all borders and petty politics.

I think it's less that they don't get it and more that they're interested in painting Chinese fans as loud nationalists, and are therefore making a lot of hay out of Nathan being criticized inside China for criticizing China. And to be fair, he has gotten some pretty intense pushback for that that is probably disproportionate to what he said (tbh...he doesn't really strike me as the kind of person who actually has a lot of political convictions). But Chinese fans loving Yuzuru doesn't really fit the picture, so it gets downplayed. Plus this is being covered by a lot of people who don't actually follow the sport. They see Chinese media and fans enraptured with Yuzu, have no explanation for it because they haven't done their research/it doesn't fit their preconceived notions, and come up with weird conspiracies to explain it.

Lack of research and sloppy journalism.  I think we’re all inured to it by now.  Speaking of sloppy, NC is really inarticulate in the unedited version of that interview about his problems as a straight boy in this sport.

I can’t say that his standing in China matters to me but I do find US media irrational (yet again).  He’s an American, and therefore there is no obligation on another country to support him.  I realise that this is partly the fault of the UK and Ireland who have tended to support the descendants of emigrés to the US to a foolish degree especially in sports where we aren’t successful, but they can’t really expect that from more pragmatic less sentimental nations.
