As for now, Yuzuru is recovering from his ankle injury and taking a much-needed rest. And while we miss out on his heroics, we more than make up for it in this throwback Thursday episode.

 

A coach in the making

 

In what is the perfect blast from the past, the 27-year-old Japanese sensation can be seen adorably teaching little figure skaters the key aspects of the sport. Dating back to 2017, the video shows Hanyu giving instructions to the kids, while the kids are looking at the Olympic champion in sheer admiration.

 

It appears the figure skating legend has all the qualities to be an excellent coach, and that comes as no surprise, given that he is the best figure skater in the world. Post-retirement, he can surely consider coaching as a professional career.

 

 

But from the gist that I read here, Yuzu doesn't want to be a coach? Any particular reason why?

I can't remember if Yuzu has ever said he doesn't want to be a coach, but there are multiple reasons for this:

1. This video is recorded a while back. At that stage, he might not considered about what he will do after retiring from competition because he still want to compete and is focusing on that.
2. Tsuzuki Sensei once suggest him to be a skating expert, where he can give consultation to multiple skaters about their jumps without having to be their coach. Being a coach meaning you'll have to pay attention to every aspect of your student's skating and being held down to one area (outside of competition).

3. If he becomes a coach, there will be at least 3 cameras following his every movements during competitions.

Totalement inattendu, il a sauté son premier saut - 4S dans son SP en raison d'un trou dans la glace. Par la suite, il nous a montré que seul un athlète de son calibre peut continuer à nous présenter une performance de classe de maître. Ses performances SP et FS sont totalement fascinantes, inspirantes et édifiantes.

Je ne doute pas que Yuzu s'éloignera de cet Oly d'une manière digne, Yuzu, mais ses actes de classe dépassent mes attentes. Avec grâce, respect, humilité, persévérance, courage pour poursuivre ses rêves et repousser les limites du sport, Yuzu a dirigé une classe de maître sur la scène mondiale sur la façon d'être un double champion olympique. M. Patinage artistique a montré qu'il est la véritable incarnation de l'esprit olympique. J'espère que Yuzu en est fier.

 

As an otherworldly being, his victory is intangible and beyond sport where symbolic medals cannot define his greatness as an athlete and a human being. I'm curious about the Japanese terms for a ratified (successfully landed) jump vs a certified (not downgraded) jump.

My guess is that when a jump is ratified, 成功 is used, and when it's just not downgraded, 認定 is used.

Can anyone please confirm (or otherwise)?
