I suggest a drinking game for the next season: For every 4Tq on the scoresheet we sip a quadruple Tequila.

You have to see it from the bright side: 1. Yuzu's chance to become the first skater to land it is very high now (if he can do it). It seems that from the initial 4A race with Keegan, Dmitriev and others only Yuzu is left, who is still doing serious attempts. 2. The chance that the first quad Axel in competition will be performed with high quality and with a program that's worthy of this historical moment is very high, too. This is what makes me happy the most. Edit: After all the hard work Yuzu has already put into his 4A practice, I don't think that BV changes or other games on the scoresheet will stop him. The 4A is his childhood dream and it would be a prestigious milestone for the entire sport. I'm really curious how the judging will develop. Yuzu's technically brilliant 4Lo and 4Lz at Torino GPF weren't really showered with max GOE and I don't expect major changes in the future. But at least his 4Lo can catch up in the BV and SOV now. This is important. Edit: It's so funny: all the rule changes (reward quality over quantity, reward difficult entries,...) and the summer webinars seem to follow exactly Yuzu's skating philosophy, but when these rules are applied in competition, the judges turn everything against him.

2020/2021 Season Program Announcements
Henni147 replied to sallycinnamon's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Sorry, I didn't catch up with the news. Does that mean, the rhythm dance theme will not be "folk/waltz" but "musical" again? Otherwise it would be weird to keep the RDs... -
Chopin and Seimei are tributes from Yuzuru Hanyu to Yuzuru Hanyu by ©Yuzuru Hanyu. The finest wine and cheese of the skating world.

Truthfully, I thought exactly the same thing Off-season 2030. Anonymous call in Spain. "Habiiiii....? Can we comp-" "Sure, but how can we compete with different flags?" "We hack into their computer system and change the flags." "You are crazy." "Is this a Yes?"

💥FINAL BRACKET 🔥: Favorite Yuzuru Hanyu Program
Henni147 replied to yuzuangel's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
This is interesting, because for me a complete program has exactly these 3 dimensions: 1. Narration dimension: a global concept/motive, then a story with a world/setting around it and a message 2. Music dimension: a music piece that tells this story in rhythm, melody and atmosphere 3. Skating dimension: the skater, who completely dives into this world (PE), translates the music into body movements (IN) and transports the concept/message to the audience (I think, this is part of the CO component). To make clear: I strictly separate intellectual storytelling and mature acting from any kind of plain copycat movements or put-on behavior. Unfortunately the judges seem to be unable to do that, when they score PCS. Best example: You can skate to Carmen music without portraying Carmen at all. There are VERY few skaters, who managed to bring Carmen to life and perfectly catch her character. That requires a certain level of maturity and advanced skating of course. In Seimei my impression is that Yuzu does not simply act or portray Abe no Seimei. Something very spiritual is happening on the ice. As if he summoned Seimei's soul and borrowed his ancient power for the performance. Both in PyeongChang and also at MOI this feeling was very strong. I actually do believe that Ballade No. 1 has a global concept and a story, too. I'm just not educated enough and don't know, what Frederic wanted to say with that music piece -

My bet, how Yuzu's incredible skating career will develop: 2021: "Hey. I have a serious chance to win the first OGM triple at Winter Games. Impossible to retire now." 2022: "Seriously? A technical and artistic program? No. As the captain I can't leave the sinking ship." 2023: "Wow. My current form is so good. It would be a waste of potential to retire." 2025: "Hmm... No figure skater has ever won four back-to-back OGMs. This is my chance." 2026: "Wait, what? A new discipline?! Men's singles' ice dance? I cannot NOT skate the inauguration season." 2027: "Single ice dance is sooo awesome! Just one more season! Please!" 2029: "Omg. It's my chance to become the first OGM in single ice dance and the first to win OGM in two different disciplines!" 2030: "Waaaah! They just allowed same sex pair skating!! I must-" ISU: Fanyus:

This may sound a bit cheesy, but I think, it's all about love. Edit: Yuzu's infinite love and dedication for skating especially. He loves and treasures his programs like his own children and you can feel it. On the floor and on the ice. He loves and respects the sport, the athletes, the history and all disciplines, not only the one he competes in. And he loves and cares for his fans. Even if he can't win, he always wants to leave something meaningful and make everyone happy. A person who gives so much unconditional love, deserves to get all the love back. That's the secret behind Yuzu's popularity, I think.

I get what you mean. I remember the graphic that shows the PCS development of Patrick, Javi, Yuzu, Shoma, Nathan, Jason and Kolyada. Yuzu and Javi both started at the absolute bottom of the graph somewhere in the mid 6s with their PCS in their first senior season. Yuzu needed 2-3 years to reach the low 8s. Today newbie seniors, who get the backing from their influential federations, start in the high 8s or low 9s with their PCS now, although their performance skills are not superior to little Romeo in any way. And the problem with this extreme PCS inflation is: 1. It doesn't motivate young skaters to improve their skating and performance abilities at all. Why changing anything, if I get such stellar scores with my current skills? 2. The truly great artists and mature performers don't get proper reward anymore, because the PCS range ends at 10 and the newbies are right behind or even in front of them with their 9s. EDIT: At the same time the new PCS cap double-punishes skaters who are prone to making mistakes and drags down their PCS even further. I mean: just because you fell on a quad, it doesn't mean that your general skating skills or the composition of your program is worse than in a clean performance. It's just another tool to reward consistent jumpers independent from their skating quality. In other words: the PCS segment got totally devaluated and the judging doesn't make any sense at all. This is such a sad development for the sport. But thankfully, Yuzu doesn't give up on his own values and still works hard on his total package. I'm so grateful for this.

Wow! NDP was used as an EX program and I didn't know? And more than that: he skated it in France at Eric Bompard and with such amazing quality on top? Thank you so much for the link, @SuzyQ !! This really made my day #Footnote: The opening jump was a quad Toe, right? A TEXTBOOK quad Toe in an EX gala. And two triple Axels right after. And all this back in 2013, when only a handful of skaters could land these jumps in competition. The whole performance was so awesome, definitely the best version of NDP I've seen so far.

I just realized once again how iconic and memorable Yuzu's poses and choreos are. Especially some opening poses like in Seimei, Origin, Otonal or R&J 1.0... you already know, which program it is, before the music has even started to play. This is so cool. It's also interesting to see how most skaters submitted skating videos - either at the ice rink or outdoors on rollerblades. And then there is Yuzuru Hanyu dancing with sneakers in front of a blank wall. Boss.

Maybe he copy-pasted the text element from Ballade No. 1 because twin-programs But hands down: 1. Adjusting 18 choreo openings for a floor-performance 2. Finding that one blank corner that gives absolutely 0 hint, where he currently is 3. Restyling his hair for every program snippet 4. Editing all the clips with brilliant transitions 5. Creating English subs for the intro Well, Hanyu-sama always gives 120%, aye?
-
Wow, I just saw the three clips and it was so lovely! It felt like Yuzu is dancing for us inside a present box And you know, what's the best thing about it? It's a present that everyone in the world understands. No subtitles or translations needed. It's the best present to start this day
-
My guess: "Hi everyone. This is Yuzuru Hanyu. I finally got my first piano and I practice Ballade No. 1 very hard everyday. I really love to play crescendos on the black keys. Do you love piano music, too?"
-
I'm pretty sure that the jump at 2:30 is the stag leap in the Otonal step sequence. It's also called a one-foot-Axel, because he's not landing on his right foot like in a "normal" Axel, but on his left foot. Also, in his usual delayed single Axels Yuzu covers less height but far more distance. I think, the air position is a bit different as well. EDIT: Here's the "normal" delayed single Axel in comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gRoIy0YWQo&t=202s I just realized that Oly Swanyu reached +1M views as well!! Finally!! It's so well deserved.
-
Same thought. That +1m high stag leap (from a low hydroblading!) is the real deal.

She really is and it makes me so happy to have someone in my family who loves to watch him skate just as much as I do Unfortunately she can't speak English (not to mention Japanese), so I translate her interesting news and documentaries into German or Hungarian. Sometimes I even create subtitles, if the clip is not too long, and then we watch it together. It's our little mother-doughter ritual since Helsinki 2017. I remember, how nervous I was before the freeskate that day. She joined me on the couch and said: 'If this Yuzuru Hanyu is really that good, he will win, don't worry.' After the free she was speechless and we replayed H&L like 10 times in a row... and of course his other performances, too Yeah and suddenly I was not the only fanyu in the house anymore

Showed my mom this video today. Her reaction: "Why is his score getting lower and lower?! Okay, it's not as perfect as forwards, but negative scoring? ISU is really shameless."
-
I think, this is the first footage, where Paul Alster's commentary absolutely doesn't bother me. I wonder, what language that is. Hsilgne? EDIT: Lol, this language really exists and has an entry in the urban dictionary Also, how awesome is it to open the program with a spin and finish with a cool swing into an invisible parking lot?! Love it. However. Ballade no. 1 sounds really butchered... Sorry, Frederic.

You really need balls to drag one the most considerate public figures in Japan into this debate. Comments like this cause me second-hand embarrassment.
-
Thank you so much Yeah. I'm usually very careful with fanfics, fictional comparisons and stuff. Yuzu is Yuzu, a real person of flesh and blood with no creator behind him, who can design and direct his storyline the way he likes. He had to fight for his fate and success all by himself. This will always set him apart from every cartoon or manga/anime hero
-
Happy Birthday to the Planet from me, too! I always wanted to draw Yuzu in style of Gosho Aoyama and I thought, this is a nice opportunity Usually I don't like to compare Yuzu with fictional characters, but I had to think of this famous quote from the Detective Conan series: "It's not about winning or losing, better or worse deductions. There's only one truth and we have to find it." - Shinichi Kudo Well, in the current madness Yuzu's skating is the truth, aye?

I would go a step further, since this is a worldwide pandemic that concerns everyone. In a time where everything is uncertain and many countries are overchallenged with the whole situation, it's so important that public figures and celebrities set an example of sensible and considerate behavior. How can you explain to the people to stay at home, to bear existential salary cuts, to isolate and discipline themselves for months, while some fine superstars can enjoy their life abroad and dance in the park? This is a smack in the face, not only for the Japanese people but everyone in the world. Especially those, who seriously suffer from this pandemic and see no light in a never-ending tunnel.
