Nope - popped into my mind too....

Well he looked pretty good towards the end of his rehab by ice show, and the cuts from media day also looked good so I’m not expecting a disastrous first pancake - even if it’s a bit rough round the edges, it’s a challenger, first comp of the season etc. I’m just looking forward to seeing him skate again - and the costumes of course.

I think those of you lucky enough to have tickets should throw whatever you like/ can fit in luggage - and let Yuzuru and the press work out what’s happening- my moneys on him to get it straight away - the press - not so quick on the uptake - 2/3 competitions before the penny drops.

Petals, although lovely in their place, would be a bugger to clear off the ice.

In the run up to Sochi - I think it was Finlandia- he was late for the press conference with Voronov and Gachinski - and a journalist asked about his costume and he said Johnny Weir had designed it and the other two exchanged knowing looks - he either didn’t notice or wasn’t bothered. I don’t think it occurs to him to consider anything but his own aesthetic which is refreshing. It’s on YouTube somewhere.

There’s a great photo in Costumes we love to hate of Brian Joubert in a R&Jesque blue costume with lace and sparkles at the waist- but he doesn’t have the wasp waist to carry it off - too chunky.

Me neither - but I’m not a middle aged western male sports commentator/sports writer/pundit/ISU official - I’m the same age group as a lot of them though and I remember a lot of unpleasantness, from my childhood favourite John Curry through to the likes of Rudy Galindo and Johnny Weir. Pretty costumes and lots of artistry means questions about masculinity etc etc etc, and that hasn’t disappeared, it’s just not out in the open anymore, and hopefully it will go when enough of them retire. they need to get over themselves. At least they don’t openly voice their prejudices these days

Bumping this up from @Lambaris post back in March in response to the questions arising in the media day thread about heteronormative attitudes towards men’s costumes. Japanese don’t think like westerners on this point - good job too, or we’d have competitions totally full of Chan/Chen yawn making costumes. If he went into coaching or choreography I could see him getting very annoyed with the music cuts we see some people working with and going to town sorting it out for his skaters.

Looking forward to hearing the music in its entirety next week. Hoping that the timing will enable me to watch next Saturday - I have a commitment on Saturday afternoon but I think it will be later in Canada, so I should be ok.

And culture gap - those Japanese children/ young adults will react in a way he is familiar with from his own adolescence - SG with his Russian background and Canadian upbringing will be quite different- a difference that it might be wise to handle cautiously.

Mmm - that’s social chit chat with young people who speak Japanese/ skating instruction again in Japanese.
