  1. You just reminded me of something I noticed at last year's SCI. A lot of the skaters who are competing will sit in the audience when they're not busy with their events, and will scream like mad for their teammates. Sometimes they're the loudest and most obnoxious cheerers in the arena - for example Team Canada always has a section with posters and flags and jerseys and their family members screaming away. I don't think anyone would or should ever have a problem with this, because cheering for your teammates is an essential part of being an athlete. So while we're busy wondering whether or not cheering is appropriate or out of control, we absolutely must take into consideration who's cheering and why. And of course, govern ourselves accordingly.
  2. This. I agree with this. There are always going to be people in the audience seeing Yuzu for the first time who are overcome and can't control their reaction, and we shouldn't spoil their first experience of seeing him by trying to squelch their joy. At the same time though, he's not a K-pop idol, and I do feel that there are some fans who take their cues for appropriate fan behaviour from that kind of thing, which can lead to crossing the line of what's acceptable. The question is though, what do you do about it? For that reason, I was actually really grateful to the fans who were distributing those yellow "We Love You Yuzuru" banners, because using one gives people the option to cheer without having to scream or yell or even make a noise at all. Anyway, maybe the answer is put a time limit on the loud cheering. Like, do it if you need to, but only for a count of ten or something. If everyone falls silent after that, so will the over-enthusiastic ones, but at least they'll have their chance to cheer.
  3. I don't think you need to apologize for an honest reaction. I was there and I was at ACI last year, and I feel that the screaming for last year's Otonal was worse than for this year's Origin. And an initial reaction upon first seeing such a costume is, as you say, impossible to hold back.
  4. I can't even get into the sit-spin position; never could do it, even as a young and presumably much more flexible child. On the other hand, I was pretty good at two foot spins but could never get one going from a dead stand still. But last year someone put video up of Yuzu casually starting from a one-foot stand still and building up to a pretty fast albeit loose scratch spin. I wish I could find it back. I think it was a practice video.
  5. Yes, I think there are a lot of skaters who get dizzy from the spins so put them at the end. Also, it's probably difficult to get a spin going from a stand still. I know there's video of Yuzu doing it out there somewhere, and Patrick Chan can do it too, but maybe for a lot of skaters they need that momentum from skating into it first. @Henni147 : I like the piece! I'd picture an opening spin working in something like this too : John Coltrane, A Love Supreme.
  6. That actually would be pretty neat, but what kind of music would you have to use to make an opening like that work? Not many pieces begin with the kind of musical flourish that suits a spin.
  7. He'll make it his opening jump - from the start position at center ice right into the judges' faces.... .... but wait. No steps going in = lower GOE
  8. Completely OT but this happened and I'm excited b/c it's such a big upset win for Japan (and I'm normally an Ireland fan for rugby). I wonder if Yuzu is following the World Cup at all. http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/news/485939
  9. And he got there simply by always being his best self and having confidence that his hard work would pay off. All the admiration he gets is natural and well-deserved
  10. Let's not forget Donovan doing his free skate at ACI in Notre Dame de Paris costume... and all the hydroblades that are popping up in Men's.... it's not just the juniors who know what's good!
  11. Man, Grassl's costume, I dunno....glittery blood? Really?
  12. At least then the judges would have an objective standard to compare to!
  13. Could Japan's influence in this regard be spreading? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/canadas-national-ballet-schools-graduating-class-1.5288565
  14. That's always going to be the problem with Prince music.
  15. All these kids copying greatness...so cute! Though I can't believe someone else beside Yuzu actually wanted to wear boobskirt!
  16. I remember watching that competition on TV and not being able to understand why Tracy and Rob didn't win...cue my lifelong consternation with ID judging... Happy Birthday, Tracy!
  17. How great is it that they included Pooh?
  18. Threats of this nature are crimes in almost all jurisdictions where the GPs are being held. If anyone receiving such a threat has reason to believe the threat was credible and specific as to location and/or time, then a phone call to local police is in order. Just sayin'.
  19. Yes. Tbh, I hold my breath every time he's in mid-air now, and get emotional when he lands safely. Fanyu PTSD. For me, every jump safely landed is the most beautiful right now.
  20. Oh, of course! It's his for Ice-chan that I saw, absolutely!
  21. I just saw the news. What a sad thing to happen. My heart goes out to them.
