Well, I think it's safe to say that Yuzuru Hanyu is not a has-been who's been dethroned by the young quadsters who are the future of figure skating, all of whom Hanyu is struggling to catch up with. Really, really safe.

Was it Amano? I read somewhere that it was Amano.

Is it safe for Hydro to see this? We might have to mop her up into a bucket and wait for her to re-form.

Yuuuuzuuuuu, please come baaack, the world very obviously needs you! ETA: I cannot believe he lost that shiny nice precioussss gold medal to that splatfest! HISSSSS!!!

I hope he felt like he was wrapped in an invisible force shield that protects and encourages all day yesterday! That's what I wish we could do for him with our support and our wishes.

I wonder if Ghana chocolates send him a chocolate cake, a recipe, and a warning not to try it at home...

It's those onion-chopping aliens. It's them. *sniffle*

These weird onion-chopping invisible aliens around, I tell you.

I celebrated by picking tomatoes and then watching ACI Chopin, CoR Swan and Helsinki H&L in quick succession. I'm not overwhelmed and crying, you're crying.

The banner, oh my, so beautiful! I hope he's having a good day.

I am glad that it looks like Russian athletes will be able to participate! They wouldn't have been able to, not really, if the official line had been opposed to it. But what's said so far seems to be positive and sympathetic to the athletes, so they can compete without popular sentiment turning against them when they go back home. *crossing everything* At least that's what I read from what we've got, and that is good news.

Ah, thank you!

I'm sorry to be an idiot, but could somebody explain what he was embarrassed by? I don't understand.

I think it's probably different for athletes, because I feel pretty much like you do. But for athletes who train from the time they're three years old especially in sports like this where state support is important (and also where that training at a certain age was probably more pain than pleasure), winning the Olympic gold specifically is such a huge goal because it's about more than personal glory. It's not just about excellence, it's also about representing their countries. Or whatever they hold dear. Odd, now you've made me think about how different sports are different. Being banned from the Olympics wouldn't matter much for athletes in sports where the big glory is in competitions other than the Olympics. Like tennis, I doubt elite tennis players would choose the Olympics over Wimbledon. Or football, who would choose the Olympics over the World Cup? But the World Cup is also all about combining personal glory with national pride, so it's different too.

This does seem like the best they could've hoped for. Still... I feel bad for the athletes. You don't dream of hearing 'Olympic athlete from Russia *your name*' when you work your butt off to be the best, you dream of hearing 'Representing Russia'. Zhenya is the best in the world at what she does now and she might not hear that. That's sad. Now I wonder what they will choose to do. If that report about neutral kit designs being ordered for the athletes is true, then hopefully they'll still get to compete. Whatever the decision is, I hope it will be official so that the responsibility of making it won't rest with the athletes themselves. That would be just too unfair.

OT now but I just realized why I thought his Chopin costume collar looked odd. It's a bit like he put on a crown that was much too big and it ended up around his neck.

All the Poohs have vanished for me.

Well, the overwhelming reaction when he got hurt is actual proof that we want him healthy far more than we want him to compete and win. Once he is healthy, we want him to compete and win, and that makes him happy. And us happy. The high when he skates his best is incredible, but none of that is more important than his health and happiness. I'm sure the messages are filtered through to him, too, so I hope they manage to convey something that makes him feel loved and supported, not pressured.

I hope Yuzu gets all his birthday wishes from all over the world in every form and realises that what we want above all is his happiness. Sometimes I wonder if the adoration becomes a burden, but maybe this birthday, he will feel our support as something to lean on, instead of something that weighs him down.

You put it so perfectly. I feel it even when I watch him on screen. As if he's creating a world and I'm being pulled into it. He doesn't really reach out to you, it's like he suddenly becomes as irresistible as gravity when he really hits it. I cannot imagine what it would be like to watch him live.

You're right about Polina, her skating is different. But I haven't watched enough of the junior girls to know what you're talking about, I'm sure you're right, I should watch more junior skating! But your thoughts about live vs TV is so interesting, especially because I'll likely be watching on screen in the foreseeable future so I won't find out for myself. But with Yuzu, I can feel the difference because of how evident it is that the audience really is with him when he is on. There's something different there, he brings them into his story and takes them with him. But it makes sense that cleaner, smoother performers, maybe even the more contained ones, look better on camera than live. They'd be easier to capture in the frame.

We all know he will compete. Of course he will. The boy doesn't know how not to. Also, same feeling I have with the Eteri skaters - not much in the skaters' hands, and programmes designed for max TES and transitions. Smart strategy, but it's asking too much of 15-18 year olds to deliver that AND captivating performances. At the end of the day, their aim is to win. They're doing that. Go on, have a cup of tea. Go on. Go on. Go on.

Zhenya got WR PCS injured, so I'd wager that her performance style and impact were not drastically affected by the injury. I guess the subjectivity is a huge factor. And if the pantomime style is not so pronounced live, I would like her more for it! She is only just turned 18, the expectations of level of performance from her is ridiculous. And anyway, her style doesn't have to appeal to everybody. Her exhibitions are more fun - reminds me of Wakaba's SP, like she's actually enjoying herself out there.TBH I don't get wowed by Caro's skates on screen, either. I've heard that Mai doesn't have that projection, but on screen, she seems beautiful with really lovely flow on ice. Satoko makes me feel like when I try to read Marlowe. Undoubtedly brilliant and elegant and excellent but all a bit too high brow for me. I feel positively uncouth that I left that cow comparison open for Satoko now. Watching Yuzu live must be unforgettable. *hugs* You'll see him, I'm sure!

Yes, TV and actual performance seen live - like when cows are small, and when they're far away. But I see what you mean about styles. Among the ladies, I still like Mai so much, even if Wakaba has more of what I call performance juice. Zhenya is a wonderful athlete and she seems like a sweetheart but seeing her programmes on a screen does nothing for me. Same for Alina, I find the two very similar. Satoko seems very refined - a little too good for the likes of me. But there we go, we both like the Pumpkin King, don't we? He's not the best skater but there's something very charismatic about how he gets totally into the character, without seeming self-conscious about it. It's no wonder our general tastes lie in a similar direction!
