Welcome!

I am struck anew by just how amazingly ill-fitted that suit is.

It's so smart not to get invested, you and @Sombreuil. That was my plan, too. But you see, I saw Rika K's 3A, and then I saw her 3A-3T, and if I'm a sucker for 3A, I'm a goner for 3A-3T. And then she did a 3-3-2 and there was no hope for me. There are more Japanese juniors with potential 3As, it's so difficult to remind myself that 3As don't always last for them. But I would appreciate it so much if there could be slightly less pink or at least less violent pink, and fewer of such huge pieces of music for her.

I still await a Sima comeback, with spins and jumps based on Yuzu's technique because Plushenko is coaching her now. This should probably now go on Team Russia thread, right? I'm confused.

Oops. I remember something about him advancing through the ranks too quickly and winning the necessary position to be invited to junior/senior level, but being too young to actually qualify. I must have mixed it all up.

Not to be rude, but what everybody is saying is that it is far too early to consider anybody as a possible podium contender in 2022, because four years is a VERY LONG TIME in ladies' figure skating. Nobody is actually looking for the queen of 2022 right now. We're all crossing our fingers and hoping that the technique and performance among the juniors - who are incredible, the JGPF thread on the planet this season was full of wonder and amazement, and I'm definitely looking forward to Worlds - will remain as they mature and grow into seniors. I think the point here is also that while Eteri's girls are very impressive, so far only two have made it through to seniors successfully and one of them is still 15. The one who is 18 is already struggling with injuries and has been overtaken by the 15-year-old as far as results are concerned. Yulia retired around the time senior girls usually hit their peak. The time frame for these girls is different. We have no real way of knowing who will be in with a good shot by 2022. Overhyping Sasha whose technique might not - it might, too - serve her well when she is 17 is a mistake. Which 15-year-old will overtake her by then? So is overhyping Alena, though she is the only one who can, so far, really sell a completely backloaded programme and her skating is really lovely. Rika Kihira's jump technique relies a little less heavily on extra fast rotations, and she is also training 4T and 4S. You Young is 13 and training the 3A from what I saw last. A lot of ladies outside of Eteri's school are also training quads, and we have no idea if any of them will manage to keep those quads when they're older. Lilbet Tursynbaeva had a 4S but this Olympics was a complete disappointment to her. The 2017-18 Junior Grand Prix events are not an accurate guide to predict who will be top of the ladies figure skating world in 2022.

So in the last five Olympics, we have two gold winners who didn't dominate junior circuit, and we have three who did extremely well in the junior circuit. We also have a lot of skaters who did very well in the junior circuit and then faded away compared to Olympic gold level success. ETA: Before that we have Tara, too, I forgot. Oops. Also didn't win Junior Worlds. I don't think there's enough in that data to draw a definitive conclusion. Especially because the really good junior move into the senior rank quicker than usual, so the pool of competitors at any given time won't necessarily be similar to the kind of competition they face once they move to senior. Mirai won JGPF, too. So did Masha Sotskova. And *cries a little* Polina. We see what puberty has been doing to a couple of them and Mirai's artistry never developed to Olympic podium level. Also, You Young is only thirteen. Judging You Young's junior success a good few years before she moves to senior is quite harsh. It's only one single season, that doesn't even include Worlds yet. Even Yuzu wouldn't rate very high if you judged him on his first junior season!

I might be wrong, but Arakawa never won a Junior Worlds title, either, did she? And going farther back, Sarah Hughes won basically no big international gold at all except the Olympics. Yes, that was a... well, quite an Olympics, but she won the gold. I don't think there's a big enough sample size to draw conclusions about only JGPF gold winners winning at the Olympics.

I'd direct you to Javier Fernandez's career, in that case. There are plenty of skaters who do great in the junior circuit and don't live up to that potential as a senior, as well. This is especially true of junior girls because those who rely on very fast rotation speeds - for quads, for instance - find that their jumps suffer as their bodies change. Sasha Trusova is very young and very small, for instance. Whether she can keep those jumps will depend on how puberty treats her.

That's great, but could you please post music talk in the music thread (and stuff about other skaters in the general skating thread)? We all go OT here and there as part of conversation, but quite a few people have posted the links to both of these threads here in the last few pages so that we can go there to make the relevant posts and stop going OT so much. There are also threads for skaters from other countries (Team Japan, Team Russia and so on in Igloo World) where they can be discussed.

Could somebody maybe give me a link to a skate by the Italian junior mentioned? My Googling skills have apparently been underrotated and downgraded. I'm iffy about what Eteri said because of the (perhaps unfounded, I don't know) reputation she has for not being able to carry skaters through puberty unless they stay very thin. So the giving up food vibes could maybe have been avoided from her. I'm completely mehhh on any ISU points changes because it'll be the same old judges and the same old review system for judges. What happened to the Chinese judge who was under review, btw? The US one of course was never even under review.

You still have hair? After following Yuzu? I don't think Pantene will do as much damage to my hair as the model does. Hair, and heart, too. They'll stand out and flip us all the bird 'coz everybody knows and nobody at ISU cares. And so Yuzu will continue doing what he does, which is frankly quite, quite insane.

I think... He will speak about his experiences, and everything in it, when he's ready. Maybe what he has to say will surprise all of us. But I think he did initiate a very important conversation by bringing up the fact that he deliberately used Seimei at the Olympics, even if his team, as Brian said, initially needed a little convincing despite it holding a world record until he broke it, himself, using Joe Hisaishi's music in another programme that was gentle and strong and beautiful. I think he was strong, brave and shrewd to use it, anyway. But we cannot know how he deals with his experiences, and what he takes from them. We can say that his experiences influence his choices, and I am glad for all of his choices, including to use music that reflects his identity. I think, if we choose to carry on that conversation, we should be careful to acknowledge carefully what he said and what he didn't say, and what we take from what he said because of our own perceptions. And we must be careful to own our perceptions as ours, instead of projecting them to his words. But the conversation can be had without him specifically being a part of every stage of it. Even what he said so far is more than he had any reason to, and we should respect him for that. And respect what he didn't say, as well. Yikes.

What? What do they need to do? This social media hiatus is beginning to look like a bad deal, I'm wasting time on everything else instead of being productive, and I don't know any of the juicy stuff.
-
Just, don't let his training be overseen by Eteri's team, not even for a day. Just, no. He would have no ankle left.
-
*hugs* It makes Yuzu's achievements all the more remarkable, because we don't even know of all the obstacles he might've had to overcome. And his Seimei will always be one of the best free skates ever, only his perfect H&L being as good, for me. He's an incredible person and an incredible skater. A true inspiration for us.

Posting here from gen chat: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2018/03/01/figure-skating/can-japans-women-skaters-catch-russians/#.WpfnXZqgfIW *screams into void about PCS yet again* What is that trite saying about insanity being defined as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result?
