Yatagarasu
I'm really happy she decided to WD for her healthy but a part of me cannot help but worry further. What even is this season.
liv
Glad she withdrew. Health is most important. She most likely would have won if she'd competed (considering she still did well at NHK with the injury), but there was no need for sacrifice here. The big competitions are still to come. I am sure she will be back even more determined and full of fight.
Smultron
So sad, but also what a relief, I was so worried she would go and compete no matter what, wise decision. Please, skating gods, let her heal well I've just realized there will be no Waka/Zhenya pics at the GPF
Guest turquoiseblue
Tatiana Tarasova: Skipping the Grand Prix Final isn’t a big loss for Medvedeva Quote I don’t think that Grand Prix Final is such a big loss for Zhenya, these are commercial competitions. There is still time, and I think she also could skip the national championship. I remember I intentionally freed my skaters from such competitions to prepare for the Olympics in silence. That’s why I think it’s a right decision, Zhenya should have time to recover. If it was my will, I’d withdraw her from competitions even earlier, it’s not right to underestimate injury. But I’d recommend to ask her coach Eteri Tutberidze to comment on this topic, she knows the situation better. And, of course, to a doctor who is responsible for athlete’s participation in competitions.

axelsandwich
Oh Zhenya... On one hand, I guess I would have been glad to be given some chance to try and argue for my case instead of just waiting like a helpless prisoner for the executives to hand down a decision but...what a weight for a 18yr old to carry while injured too. Russia would likely boycott the Olympics even if they were allowed to compete as neutral athletes, it’s a bit ‘all or nothing’. It’s always too much to expect the officials and higher ups who actually put the system in place to be punished, athletes always have to take the fall
Yatagarasu
I think chances are low for Russia to accept participating under the neutral flag, which frankly, I find perfectly understandable but on the other hand, I hope they still do, however humiliating it is, simply because they can still get those medals that way. While it's stressful for her I am sure, I am glad she can say she tried to do something but let's be honest here. She's very aware she cannot influence this decision; whatever it is, it's already been made, and this is just a finishing touch on the formalities. I am going to cross everything that we'll still get a Rio-like decision.

I am going to cross everything that we'll still get a Rio-like decision. I doubt Russia would compete under a neutral flag... national pride and all, I can't see their leadership ceding to it. They're still taking the hard line that there is absolutely no state-sanctioned doping iirc and accepting part of the 'punishment' would be tantamount to admitting there's some validity in the charges. I know there's little chance Zhenya could affect the decision but I hope she won't feel guilty about it if the IOC does decide to take the drastic measures. This whole thing is such a mess. Athletes don't deserve to be scapegoated and punished for the crimes of an entire system of officials/gov/organisations but if there really is such a system, it's never going to change unless the organising committee pulls the trigger and metes out extreme sanctions. It's like trying to wipe out an infection/virus -- too little and you might not kill the 'root' cause but if you're really going to raze it to the ground, you will inevitably be ruining the efforts of many many innocent athletes too )):

katonice
This is a nice interview with Maria. Didn't know she worked with Arutunian before, and that she speaks English well!
