Yes that seems to be the main drive. Im disappointed in Japanese Media lack of respect for athletes who display more athleticism. Figure skating is not a beauty contest.

Isnt marin the only jr world champion among current jpn ladies? (The only jpn champion in 8 yrs til now where jr worlds are all dominated by russian ladies). Thats quite smt phenomenal so i understand why attention and expectation is heaped on her, being the next Mao or smt. Marin got the hype hence all her siblings (who r skaters too) go up w it. Media attention also depends how much actively u take on public activity (i mean Mao doesnt need to be a perfect beauty to be a super public figure). As Marin underperformed and hide away from media from now on, the attention for her and the sisters def would go down (until she's going back to her prime at least).

I thought the Honda family has gotten loads of media attention for years because one of Marin's baby sisters is a rather popular child actress? I never saw it as much of a mystery why the media would latch on to Marin when she's already known to the public, has success as a skater and shows promise for more. Plus, yes, she's pretty and charming. Half the work is already done when you have to report about her.

That would be Miyu Honda. :) Such a cutey and seems very humble and intelligent, too. :)

Here she is showing Johnny and Plushenko around Tokyo:

Nobu will be on the 2 hour 10th Anniversary Special of vs Arashi on the Baba Arashi segment! It starts at 7pm JST this Thursday the 12th. The Baba Arashi segment will probably air closer to 8pm. :)

Baba Arashi is a special game of Old Maid which sounds very boring but is one of the funnest things on TV, I think. It does depend on the guests, though, but I’m sure it’ll be fun with Nobu!

A cute article on Keiji Tanaka, referred to as Shoma's big brother and Yuzu's wife 😂

And Keiji having the most common sense off ice... I can believe it

Quote

When they were juniors, Uno-kun would stick to Tanaka-kun like glue, following him around everywhere. When they would share a room at away tournaments, Uno-kun was not used to those kinds of trips, so you’d even see Tanaka-kun teaching Uno-kun how to do laundry. Uno’s coach would be embarrassed, saying to him, “Sorry for hassling you all the time.” And Tanaka-kun would puff up his chest and say, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.” I think he was more like a reliable father than an older brother (laugh)” ( – sports writer)

At nights when they can’t go home after competing, they stay up playing Yu-gi-oh! card games. It seems the meeting place is almost always Tanaka Keiji’s hotel room.

“Tanaka likes to keep everything clean, and apparently he keeps his room very cozy and neat. (laugh). After the free skate at the 2016 Four Continents, Uno went over to Tanaka in the waiting room and just quietly sat on his lap. They showed that on TV. It really did look like a father and his son.” ( – previously mentioned sports columnist)

It appears that the main reason Tanaka feels compelled to take care of Uno is that he’s “an eccentric kid.”

“He likes skating too much – so much so that I don’t think he has any interest in anything else

Quote

Just like his nickname ‘the absolute king’ would indicate, Hanyu-kun tends to be a hard person to approach. But he is a lot more talkative than you’d expect. Tanaka-kun is just the opposite – he’s the silent type. So, with Hanyu-kun usually doing the talking, Tanaka-kun is just going, “Yeah, yeah,” and “Really?” He mostly takes on the listener’s role. Hanyu-kun’s a very quick-thinking person, so the pace of the conversation tends to be quick as well. But since they’ve known each other so long, Tanaka-kun is not taken aback by how quickly he talks, and I think that must make Hanyu-kun feel at ease.” ( – sports writer)

The TV program must be fun because Arashi and Nobu got along well when they appeared in a TV program together in the past.

But isn't he the team "Hey, remember us?"? (I don't mind if he comes back to this thread anytime, though )

I hope the Japanese media gives more attention to Japanese novice and jr skaters who are getting better results than Honda sisters. Sometimes I wonder if they see figure skating as a celebrity contest because I hardly knw any novice champions or jr champions as much as I knw the honda girls... Im not sure if thats a good thing too. Too much coverage and media exposure when they are not even JR and Senior podium level may give them a false sense of superiority.

Miyu Honda was a successful child actress of Kaseifu no Mita, and her sisters, Marin, Sara also belong to the same talent agency as Miyu. They appear on TV shows and commercials because it's kind of their job and we know that. When media covers them at a competition they also report their result as it is, so I think viewers in Japan know in what position Honda girls currently are among Japanese young ladies.

Personally, I doubt getting much media attention is necessarily beneficial for very young skaters. Being a novice/junior skater means that you are going to have to deal with growth spurts soon, and that means you may have to reconstruct all of your technique. I think that's when you need support from specialists and people with experience, not the attention of media and the general public.

Ah, you're right! I think, after seeing how well he skated in the recent ice shows, my brain somehow brought him out of retirement. :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

Wakaba is posting pics with Benoit Richaud on ice ... Does that mean, he'll choreograph for her and not Shae-Lynn? That would be so disappointing ... Especially since I don't think Richaud is as good as Shae ....

SP, FS, EX. Hopefully Shae does one of them, at least. :snonegai:
