Toni
I have a crazy fear that, if Yuzu doesn't skate, not enough people will buy tickets and merchandise from CiONTU, and Yuzu's project may be a financial disaster, so I really, really, really want to buy merch to support him. If I felt he needed it, I think I would even simply donate. I donate a lot of my salary to charities and I think raising awareness about figure skating and passing the torch to new generations is a worthy cause. In fact, this is a truly noble project on Yuzu's part and I keep worrying about the old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished." Also, Yuzu recently said he expects a major disaster now because he won so big and with every atom of my body, I want the universe to prove him wrong. Is there any way that maybe a group of us could actually find a way to buy merch from CiONTU? There's a phone number on the "Goods" page for the lady organizing the sales... 59 minutes ago, OonsieHui said: I know thats not the intention, but dang did anyone else immediately think of "paint me like one of your French girls"? Well, I'm quoting myself because I did various Google searches and I may have found a place we can buy CiONTU merch from: http://www.japanhomemaker.tokyo/ Link to comment

As much as Yuzu insists he's not an idol, he is treated as one. 4 years ago, over 90,000 people went to see him wave on top of a truck. Now, he'll also be talking and interacting, even if he's not skating. People will go. And the Japanese love merchandise. Plus there will be those buying to resell on yahoo auctions and such. I really have no fears whatsoever. Link to comment

Yes Yuzu won't skate but he invited some skaters who say the least not quite shabby. I know for sure Plu and Johnny have many hardcore fans in Japan... Link to comment
robin
Plus Yuzu also kept the ticket prices quite reasonable. I would say there is no way an ice show in Japan with reasonable ticket prices won’t sell out PLUS Yuzu will actually be there to interact with his idols. No way it won’t sell out Link to comment
Pamigena
This guy can sell out electric toothbrushes without even looking at his skates I'm sure the show will be just fine Link to comment

I really have no fears whatsoever. It's not the merch I'm worried about, it's the possibility of there being empty seats in all those 66 movie theaters that someone has to pay for. I think merch sales can make up for that even if the theaters aren't filled, so they really aught to make it EASY for international sales to help out. Link to comment

I knew Plushy and the others skated in the shows regularly, but I didn't know they had so many fans in Japan. Thanks for the reassurance! Link to comment

CiONTU tickets are sold out (at least last that I checked). But not sure about the movie theatre tickets though. For the merch, I know I'm raring to buy some. But I guess none of us are worried about that part lol. Link to comment

I don't think that should be a great concern either. Even assuming the shows won't be as in high demand as NHK or GPF last year (and I seriously doubt that), it's on a Sunday afternoon and the tickets are very affordable, so many casual viewers, families, can go together and watch in a comfortable environment. And especially since, I think, the TV broadcast is on a pay channel by TV Asahi, not the regular one, it might make more sense to pay 4000yen once for a cinema ticket, than subscribe to a channel you might not need afterwards. I agree, and skating is insanely popular in Japan, and this show has a star-studded cast, not to mention Yuzu (even as an MC or announcer). It's an Olympic year, too, and show tickets are sold out/by lottery, blah blah, I wouldn't be surprised if even the cinema tickets sell out.. Link to comment

Well that’s both great (people can’t watch for free) and meh (maybe we won’t be able to stream it from other countries.) Link to comment

I'm afraid all the Japanese young skaters put together, skating, wouldn't sell half as much as Yuzu just standing around doing nothing much. And despite my idol comment, it's not just about the image, it's about everything he is. Two times Olympic Athlete, tragic hero (earthquake survivor and a symbol of hope for his homeland), accomplished athlete, respectful, charming, smart and yes, good-looking. And because of the way he's been 'marketed' so far, highly exclusive. People will want to see him, even if he's not skating. Plus, yes, Plushy and Johnny are very popular in Japan. I think Jeff is, too. And figure skating in general. I understand a tendency to worry, I do it a lot, too, but I really think we have nothing to worry about this time. Link to comment

I get what you're saying, but you can't have your cake and eat it, too. The more exclusive - i.e. hard to get - Yuzu stuff is, the better it sells, the more money they make. So for the whole 66 cinemas thing to work... If you make it so people can watch it for free at home, why wouldn't they watch it in the privacy of their own homes instead of a cinema? (Though admittedly, there's also the atmosphere of watching with other fans, but you still decimate your target audience.) It's all in the marketing. *shrugs* Link to comment
Gaby
Wheeew , finally I 'm able to catch up with the thread ! The folks who have dissected his speech patterns : I'm your fan. It was the most fascinating read for me :)) It's equally as exciting from the linguistic point of view, especially for the ones who have just started their first baby steps in conquering Japanese, and from the personal point of view. It's like another layer of his extraordinarily personality has been added for me . So fascinating. Link to comment
