After months of dead silence, it was critical that he finally let everyone know what had been happening with him--what his "story" was for this Olympics. And I thought he did an excellent job. Agreed -- while it was upsetting to find out just how severe his injury was (I suspected it was worse than they had been letting on), I'm glad he was able to remind everyone of just how wonderful his outlook is, and to give an impression of confidence and optimism after such a long struggle. And taking the time to thank everyone (including people sending him messages when he was injured... I'm pretty confident that includes all of our fan gifts!) like the class act he is. One presscon was better than being hounded by reporters for multiple comments (while being a spectacle in itself). I know it's easy to project our own anxieties onto him but the boy is used to media attention, had the chance to rebut speculation with his own words and handled it beautifully, I think he'll be fine on that front Link to comment
KatjaThera
I think the press conference might have also been a cathartic experience for him. Getting closure for the injury period, by talking about it openly, and being able to completely put it behind him. He looked beautiful and soft and strong and really positive in that press conference. The video especially. He looked clear and calm and "yes, it was hard, but I'm here now". And a bit like what Brian said: a man on a mission. Link to comment

I don't mean to rain on the parade, but do you guys think judges actually watch skaters' press conferences? Link to comment

They probably don't but they will hear from others through the grapevine what was said to all the media gathered there. Also, it would not be illogical to consider that while the judges might not normally watch press conferences, a formal press conference being held by a legendary skater returning after several months of forced inaction might be one they'll take the time to watch, either live or pulling it up off the net. Remember, these judges are part of the figure-skating scene and are concerned about its well-being. Yuzu is one of the finest advertisements for figure skating the sport has seen. His humility and equanimity really help bring respect to the sport and also help raise its public profile. I think also many of these judges, even though they will do their utmost to judge him evenhandedly in competition, have a personal interest in him. Judges are human, after all, and like any human they are drawn to admire certain other humans. Figure skating has rarely had an individual so qualified to be an object of admiration than Yuzuru Hanyu. Link to comment

I wonder if this kind of conference is really good for him in general? I watch it and it drains my energy so much. I feel heart-broken. I know he's smiling happily in practice but still. Why not just wait for the Olympics to end to give the press conference? Or because the demands from Japanese media and public is too huge he has to give them some "news" and this is the result? I don't really know. Sorry I am being paranoid. I mean why just let him enjoy the Olympics without this huge attention for a while... I think it's good to have that big press conference now prior to the competition itself because you know everyone will be asking about his injury sooner or later anyway. Why not do it sooner to a crowd of reporters so he doesn't have to repeat himself? Get that out of the way - media will have their story/sound bites and then he can concentrate more on practice. Lanvin
They may not watch the press conferences, but they do watch practices though, allegedly (i keep hearing this is a thing). But I think that's for Ice Dance, to prepare for the final ranking since ID judging is somewhat ~pre-determined~. Link to comment

We haven't seen the new version(s) yet, so who knows Maybe we get Fred the Strawberry Fairy Link to comment
