Well I guess I am the only one who feels relieved? Didn't I say something a while ago if he did too well in his first competition of the season I would be scared?

now this is ok. Let him go back to Toronto and heal his knee properly. He will be fine by Cup of Russia.

This is something I'm curious about. That is, any athlete that is not fully born and trained in the native land is viewed less favorably than the "pure native" athlete. Does Japan tend to not treat its stars as "pure natives" anymore if they train extensively overseas? Like having Yuzuru contributes less to national pride over its own skating system? And instead of it really being Yuzuru vs Shoma, it's more of the pure native, japanese only training system (Shoma) versus the foreign system (Yuzuru). Yes, Japan had Mao who did train with Tarasova, and Shoma has a foreign jump coach, but in both cases they both returned to the native system-Mao had a japanese coach most of the time (and left Tarasova), and Shoma only works with a foreign jump coach periodically, his main coach is still Japanese.

As for the seimei costume, at the arena, I got to sit behind the skater's entrance zone. If you pay attention to the white cloth sections, it looks very textured, as if it's got very heavy embroidery on it.

I don't think there is anyone in FS who loves Japan more or is prouder to be Japanese than Yuzu. Whether they recognize this in Japan or not, is a different issue.

That said, I think that's overthinking things. Shoma has the political support of Nagoya, in the FS world. But that's it. As far as Japan in general goes, Yuzu is still the star and will continue being so, because he has the story and the charm. Aside from being an excellent skater and the first men's fs olympic champion, he's a tragical hero. Any failures - combined with knowledge of injuries, as much as he might not like it, only add to it. The average Japanese isn't that nationalistic and doesn't hate overseas, I think. So I don't think give much of a damn where Yuzu trains as long as he skates for Japan. And if he'll get OGM again, the narrative will be another story of triumph in the face of hardships.

So let Nagoya enjoy the moment. (I'm not adding Shoma, because I like to think he genuinely likes Yuzu and doesn't really get involved in the politics. Plus, Shoma knows Yuzu's better than this. He won't rest easy because of this one free skate.)

A late report to everyone.

So everyone knew about Hydroblade's paper swans. What you don't know is that her paper swans have gone feral/wild and have even invaded enemy territory (aka Skate Canada). Leaving to go to the restroom, I noticed one of the volunteer ladies heading to the stairs leading to the skaters, teams and volunteers only area. I panicked and initially wondered if they confiscated her swans, so I asked a door guard what happened and if indeed, that was that box of swans. The door guard just smiled, nodded and confirmed that yes, indeed they were the swans. That some fan folded them and it is a nice gesture, and was passing them out to other fans. It might not have been intended for the volunteers today, but somewhere alone the telephone line, the message changed to give some to the volunteers. So, a volunteer lady was rushing them downstairs to be shared with all the other volunteers!

So now we have some wild, feral paper swans that have invaded the Skate Canada enemy territory! Now if only someone handed a swan later on to Pchiddy....XD

>:) The swans took over the Sportplexe muahahahahaha

Also...

I was squished under the Chinese fans at the victory ceremony, against the railings.

Yuzu was right in front of me, leaning on the boards, head down, facing the people. I had a Swan I wanted to give him but I was hesitating.

But I gathered courage and shouted "Hanyu senshu!!!"

He looked around, up and then straight at me. He didn't look at my hand, he just looked at me in the eye, gave me a BEAUTIFUL smile, bowed at me with his head and said "arigatou".

During the victory lap, I was still squished under the Chinese fans, but I got a space kitty wrinkly smile.

Finally, after the press conference, we stayed to see if we could catch him and he saw my banner and the pH one, as  we were holding them up. We didn't shout, we just stood there. He saw my banner and me again, and everyone else too, we got an arigatou gozaimashita.

In short, my dreams came true. I accomplished everything I wanted. I hope he carries that support I gave him in his heart all season.

I'm not surprised if there's a bit of projection happening between 'Japanese native trained' vs 'foreign trained' - it's just unfortunate Yuzu and Shoma are perfect opposites in that regard so it becomes another point of comparison/separation of the two (though a subtextual one...no one would actually come out and say it but there is a lot of loyalty-to-country type attitudes that gets talked about every so often). The bigger point that his JP critics seem to latch onto sometimes is that Yuzu isn't really typically Japanese in a lot of his attitudes - to me (and a lot of us in Western countries), it reads as confidence and admirable drive but Japan tends to discourage the sort of self confidence and shameless thirst for number one (as well as Yuzu's...more flamboyant Extra-ness and love for showing off what he can do - their word for it seems to be 'narcissist', which...kind of tells you how they regard it, even though he's nowhere close to the actual English definition). He ameliorates it by being impeccably polite at all times, restraining himself to a degree in front of JP media and his confidence works because he never boasts about things he can't do... but he's definitely a bit of an anomaly. Thankfully I'd say it's just his naysayers... the general public/media he works with seem to be charmed by him as they should.

(it's also sad because he clearly adores his country. Also I don't believe Shoma is involved at all so it's just unfortunate for both of them)

There are about 20 swans heading with me on a 16 hour flight to China, swans going to Europe, and swans going to Japan. The swans are doing some international long distance formation flying.

Next time they should interview Yuzu's golden swan.

"Swan-san, what words do you have for the siblings you have overseas?"

...what does the swan say?

I'm so happy that all your hard work and heart put into preparing the swans and also working on the Planet has paid off beautifully at your first live competition, what a dream~~~ So happy you got the courage to yell out to him too! :tumblr_inline_mm2wbaeqQM1qz4rgp:

I'm with you. Strangely I feel relieved that he didn't peak too early. I would also be scared if he did perfectly there. It will put more pressure on him and that's not good. Ofc I'll be happy if he goes clean every time and winning gold. But he's not evgenia. Men's field are doing more difficult jumps and they are so intense with quads. I don't expect a clean performance throughout all season. But I hope he goes clean (peak) at the right time (Olympic).

I can't say I feel happy right now but two WR at ACI would have scared me actually. I think it was Brian's plan to make the first competition not so easy to win. I hope it works and the lesson is learned.

I feel calmer now but still feeling disappointed after the result. I don't know if loving this extra overlordzuru will makes me suffer from nervousness. But to see myself still alive after 4CC, GPF, WTT and World's SP from last season, I think I'll be fine until Olympic (I hope so).

And yuzu, I trust him. He'll be fine. :snonegai:

If you are a true fanyu you are condemned to suffer from time to time. And to feel the overwhelming happiness from time to time also.

Thanks meoima :10742289: I will always believe your words haha.

Being his fans for years, I kinda give up to the pattern. I mean... knowing him... this is just the Yuzuru we all know and love. Breaking records yesterday and making some mess the next days. When he said he wanted to raise the average and be like Zhenia Medvedeva... I chucked a bit. I have said many times he can't be like her. Really, people are born with their true nature and I never see anyone changing that. The point is he will take all of this as some lessons and turn it into advantage in the most important moments. He did it at GPF 2015, WC 2017, he can do it again.

He will be fine, as long as he is healthy, he will find a way to win big. The rest is just dust in the wind.
