Especially as it seems that at that point of time he didn't know she was sick beyond asthma. 

 

That aside and while I don't know whether it's true or not, I've heard that some asthma support group has started to tell kids exactly that.

 

To encourage them beyond their suffering to think they can do anything they want. I think that's great.

Canada Pt. 2

Brian had already heard of that place, Planet Hanyu, a new forum dedicated to Yuzuru. Today, he had some rare free time, and was curious about catching up with Yuzuru from a different perspective.

The translations of interviews were interesting, although they just confirmed some things he suspected about Yuzuru.

He read the posts filled with crying poohs whenever 4A, 4Lz, quints (he shuddered after reading the translation of the morning program where they showed him his hypotetical 4A, seeing his face lit up after knowing how he needed just 17cm more to achieve it, and where someone dared to mention how they think he can land a quint) or unsupervised training in Japan was mentioned. 

"Finally" said Brian sipping his wine "Someone understands"

Now, if only Yuzu could be a bit more sympathetic about that...

I understand, I usually refuse to speak unless I'm sure I'm saying things more or less correctly. I have to applaud Yuzu's courage to go to Canada with virtually no English...

Hmmmm regarding that asthma video, I'm sure you guys have already expressed this but can I just say it blows my mind that Yuzuru is capable of doing such hellishly difficult programs with his condition...I have asthma myself and the thought of doing what he does makes me want to fling myself out the window. Whenever I watch videos of a younger Yuzuru panting and nearly convulsing after his programs I always wince because let me tell you, if you're wheezing and panting that hard you are in a LOT of pain. It hurts like you would not believe and you feel like you're legitimately going to die in that moment due to the lack of air. Like you're underwater and being crushed by the pressure. The fact that Yuzuru has persevered as long as he has and has subjected himself to that kind of feeling over and over again is honestly incredible, since it's all due to his love for the sport and competing. He's noticeably gotten much better at managing it, too, which speaks volumes about his mental strength, since in order for the to happen you pretty much have no choice to experience it continuously. I just...I really want to hug him, he's so inspiring.

He sounded quite well. At first cameras was focused on Kovtun and I wasn't sure about who was speaking. What a pleasant surprise it was! Hopefully we will hear more Russian from him at the first GP event.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's hard to imagine but it certainly must be awfully frightening to go through and I understand more now thanks to your vivid description. I hope you're managing well now. 

 

I don't have asthma but I've found it incredibly inspiring, too. He's amazing. I have a very disabling chronic illness and since finding this miracle boy who skates his heart out, knowing it's going to be painful, knowing he's going to collapse, feeling no shame or embarrassment about it, it's really helped me get through this particularly rough time I've been having. I get worried about leaving the house because I know I'll feel sick and sore, not to mention the embarrassment that comes with malfunctioning in public. But that fear of pain and sickness and embarrassment has almost completely gone and I've gone out on my own in the past month more than I have in a year. And I've done it with a smile despite it all. I just feel calmer about handling it when it happens and though there's no cure, hopeful that I can at least get stronger.

 

I wish I'd had someone like him to look up to when I was younger. He really is amazing.

I think he's actually quite talented in languages, at least in the speaking part, despite English being the only subject causing him trouble in middle school. His English doesn't have any trace of the typical Japanese accent. His Russian's good. His "merci beaucoup" doesn't miss the uvular. And the several Chinese phrases I heard from him sound like someone who's been living in China for years - he got all the tones right, very impressive! I have foreign friends who can express themselves rather well in Chinese, but still don't sound as natural as him.

Oh, all these little discoveries that make you fall for him a bit more each time!

Yes, I remember that! For me learning a new language is about understanding its inner "music", about getting used to how it sounds. And Yuzu has innate musicality which helps a lot. Probably he has more problems with grammar then pronunciation.

On the athsma point his parents deserve a mention - there is nothing as frightening as watching one of your children struggle to breathe- its very courageous to make yourself allow them to follow a path which is difficult for people who are completely healthy.

Definitely! I was a pretty sickly kid - allergies and childhood asthma (that I've thankfully grown out of). I appreciate everything else my parents have done for me except for when I expressed any interest in sports they would be the first to tell me that I couldn't do it because of my health or my physical capabilities (I'm very clumsy). While I think they were just worried about me, it had the unintended consequence of shooting down my self confidence.
