  1. I'm wondering how much the fan voting factored in to the final choices for the shortlist. Seems odd that pairs would be completely overlooked, but maybe it's as a result of the fan vote? People tend to be a lot more passionate over singles than pairs.
  2. Honestly, I do want to watch for research purposes, so that the next time I say the awards are a bad idea, I can back my opinion up with facts and examples. I'm pleasantly surprised that Young You made the shortlist for best newcomer, thought the 3As would have it sewn up. That best coach list though... like, why not just declare a cage match between their supporters and have done with it. yikes.
  3. If Gabby and Guillaume don't win Most Entertaining Program for 'Fame", I'm-a RIOT!!! (sorry Zu, but comedy trumps all for me...) Even though that trophy should by rights be going to Jean-Luc and Kaitlyn for Dead Black Swan .
  4. You've seen this, right? https://www.redbull.com/ca-en/athlete/emmi-peltonen Unfortunately I can't see video on the link any more, but Emmi did go and do just that - skate a program outside under the northern lights in Finland. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe Iceland actually does have a proper rink or two: https://www.whatson.is/where-to-go-ice-skating-in-reykjavik/. So no need to be outside! Natural ice is great but not safe for figure skating.
  5. I prefer LIFA and Helly Hansen for that. LIFA is especially good for Nordic skiers like myself, because you can get it in various weights for different temperatures/activity levels. Neither brand is cheap, though. A set of LIFA (long-sleeve top and longjohn bottoms) is $100 or more.
  6. I hear what you're saying. And yet, Kelowna was crawling with sightseeing skaters the whole five days. Remember that the skaters aren't sitting in the rink from one end of the day to the other the way the fans are. They only need to show up for their own practices and events and otherwise their time is free, so they actually have more opportunity to sightsee than a fan paying for an all-event ticket would have. Agree that it's a long flight, though. Still, with Worlds having been cancelled this year, and other comps at the start of the season likely to be cancelled as well, 4CC 2021 would be seen as a crucial opportunity to get competition experience in in the run-up to Beijing. So if it does get cancelled, any remaining competitions that get held will have high importance for the skaters no matter where they hold them. I keep waiting for the ISU to discover Iceland. It would be so awesome to go there for a FS competition.
  7. I didn't even think of it! However, the image didn't show up in my Googling either...weirdly. The short-sleeve UA is definitely the best choice for this purpose - it shows all the body lines properly, so you can measure the actual dimensions instead of waffling around with bunches of fabric. From that perspective, Chopin is not so useful. About UA - when I was growing up, UA was what the hockey players wore under their pads and jerseys. I'm used to thinking of it as a purveyor of turtlenecks and longjohns, not a fashion brand. And I can't escape that old mental association - every time I see Yuzu in it, hockey pops into my brain even now.
  8. See, up until COVID, I was thinking that 4CC 2021 would attract a lot of the big-name skaters, just because it's in Australia. I mean, that's the one part of the globe they never get to travel to, even though they travel all the time. I'm sure a lot of them are just like us and want to see Australia.
  9. The disappointment must be awful for all the fans there. It's a huge setback for Australian skating too. All I can say is, come on, vaccine!! Hurry up and get developed already! All those brand new A-380s sitting in the desert rotting...what a waste.
  10. So would we all! Poor Yuzu, such thirsty fans...
  11. Whoa. That seems very extreme. Is it that the situation in Australia is so bad, or that the government really really really does not want to risk infected foreigners coming in? ....I have a cousin in Sydney. I was so hoping that I could manage 4CC and pay him a visit at the same time. Guess that's off the menu now. :(
  12. Especially the 'most valuable skater' thing? That only makes sense if skating is a team sport...which logically, means they should give it to a synchro skater. The whole thing is just plumb loco.
  13. Oh Lord, why? Don't tell me people are actually betting on Daniil to win Best Choreo or something edited to add - Never mind, I read the rest of the thread.
  14. Interesting. When you strip away the attitude and the showmanship, there's a really good artist under there...I watch this and I realize why Yuzu idolizes him. Ditto about wondering whether his student can do it as well as him. I think the same thing every time I see Stephane skating next to Deniss too...Stephane will always be the better skater.
  15. They still have their call for volunteers open...the cut off for deciding to cancel it is, I believe, 10 weeks prior to the event. So who knows? I hope everyone realizes this: the real test of the end of the first wave of the virus is when people start to travel again, and whether or not that triggers clusters of infection. Look at what happened in Hong Kong - they had the virus all but gone, opened up travel enough to allow some expats to return, and suddenly they had another outbreak - and they were observing strict quarantine measures for everybody entering the territory. This virus is one sneaky bugger and all it takes is a little lapse in vigilance for it to break out again. Also, there's this: https://www.cbc.ca/sports/tennis/tennis-novak-djokovic-coronavirus-positive-test-1.5623347 What that tells me is that there's no such thing as too safe when it comes to this virus. And that it's still way too early to bring back spectator sports events.
  16. Ohhh beauty!!! This is what I wanted to do initially but I wasn`t sure I could scale all the images to match properly. Are his legs really longer or is that the skates? That caused me trouble too, so I decided the circle should go through his heels.
  17. It never showed up in my Googling When I look at that one, I get; Shoulders to hip: 4.2(hip): 5(shoulders) Shoulders to waist: 3(waist): 5(shoulders) Waist to hip: 3(waist):4.2(hip) Edited to add: Got really curious, and I had some time. Consequently, I present to you: Yuzu vs Vitruvian Man (w. apologies to Da Vinci): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uEKm7iN9g7vw71Zkk8SR6pUriHmdHGEq/view?usp=sharing Sorry it's Google Docs instead of Drive. For reasons best known to itself, my Drive won't upload anything today. So, please don't edit the document! Just look. Will replace with a proper Drive version later. Updated with Drive version
  18. Guilty as charged, your honour. I also measured the ratio of the width of the mannequin's hips to the width of the shoulders, because the shoulders looked so wide - perfect 2:3 ratio. But as far as I can tell from photos of the real thing, Yuzu's hips are more like 4:5 of his shoulder width. (smallest ratio I can find, is 3:4, from the ACI 18 podium photos). Likewise, they have his waist to shoulder ratio as 1:2 on the mannequin but The Waist is actually more like 3:5 of his shoulders, from photos. I can't believe I've descended to this level of obsessive attention to detail ... my misspent life! Also, it's annoyingly difficult to find photos of him in that static position where he's just standing with his arms by his side.
  19. Yes, that's the number I get, too, but that's still a very high number for one person. (1 JPY = 0.0094 USD)
  20. I kind of love that one photo of Yuzu in his Under Armour in front of the Canadian Tire sign at SCI. The slogan he's standing in front of reads "We all play for Canada".
  21. Oh, I haven't heard that story yet, but I could well believe it!
  22. You mean in Ottawa, where I live? It is the home of the Skate Canada offices, after all.
  23. All our complaining about it aside, it's actually not fair for us to knock it until we've tried it, so I would be on board with the stream idea. At least then I'll know if my bellyaching is justified.
