  1. Sorry guys, I'm a total noob. How do I ... add a gif?
  2. Oh Yuzu and his pain tolerance... Coming to think of it, if they released this video pre-FS we would have all worried to death. (As if we didn't worry enough...) But I thought that he has to ice his left leg after every session due to Lisfranc already. I'm surprised that he is using an actual ice-in-plastic-bag. There are better packs out there...
  3. That booth at ShumatsuSendai has a hilarious caption: Each customer please take only one copy of Shumatsu Sendai. Yuzu's face on a magazine = guaranteed sell-out Yuzu's face on a free magazine = guaranteed mob.
  4. Well it said here that Honda's coach called her lazy. So, it's probably not surprising that she is changing coach. When I was young I had a tough coach (in a different sport), and though he improved us a lot, in retrospect it was insulting. My teamate stuck around long enough to win a silver medal in Asia, but she was kind of in depression after that and didn't go beyond. To be a complete athlete, first and foremost you need to be a complete person. This is why Brian is such a great coach - he grows them not just as athletes but as people.
  5. Boyang is so cute I'm kind of curious why he fell apart at Worlds, but hey, anybody can have a bad day. (Flashback: Yuzu's Skate Canada). I look forward to his new program next season.
  6. Don't stalk him guys (and girls) - let the King wander around in peace. Although, I'm very jealous of people who live in Toronto. I had that option to move there for work myself back in 2015 but didn't take it . I think it makes 100% sense for him to be in Toronto. Why stay in Japan? The show and parade won't need his daily inputs. He said that he wants to get rehab asap, and that should be done in his training base, ie Toronto. Plus I think from interviews, I get the impression that he can only skate in peace in Japan when he goes to the rink at midnight. Imagine that kind of lifestyle on a daily basis...
  7. Join us for the best data project ever! Dear the computer scientists, the data scientists and the FS lovers amongst us, Since we've been discussing about new scoring system and its effects... I'm totally won over (and shocked to the core) by Ambesi's argument here https://the-a-factor-fs.tumblr.com/post/165975610600/kiss-cry-episode-1#Part_4 The ISU needs to base their decisions on facts and numbers. Ambesi has been calling for a data revolution, but seems like the ISU hasn't taken notes. According to him, the new system won't change anything, and he presented some very good points. 1- Judges correlate TES with PCS: high TES automatically equals high PCS. So changing TES will not change the problem 2- Why not change base multiplier for PCS 3- Personal inflation for some skaters; Biases from federation The last point I find most ridiculous. It is ridiculous how experts like him (and many experts amongst us) frequently make comments like "How many US judges are there on the panel? Then we would know if Hanyu get 10 in PCS"; or "Those American girls get high scores because of their nationalities"; or "some skaters automatically get 9s in PCS and that just doesn't make sense'. We, lovers of this sport, have put up with such blantant score manipulations for too long! We should give constructive feedback. The good news is, all the scoring data, the videos, the rule book etc are available publically. So I call for a data analysis project to present the ISU with numbers, facts. Some of us have already done interesting anlaysis (eg: @yuzuangel ). Let's pool resources to do the most ambitious and timely project ever: recommend the best scoring system for the ISU. Specifically, we want to use data to answer the following questions Q1: is TES a clear predictor for PCS? This is dead easy to do. Q2: what predicts an individual skater's score? factors: competition, judge's federations, etc etc (need some discussions, since we need to take out the "true" score obtained by mechnically applying the rules from the rule book.) One way to get this gold standard would be to average many independent experts' scores (to be discussed further on how to gather such data). One can also do something similar to @yuzuangel's analysis on her blog: eg: compare skater's score x judge's federation Q3: more simulations like the one Ambesi mentioned in the article (more discussion later). A report that answers Q1 and Q2 is already huge. And it will make a huge impact, since it will strike a chord with many observers, reporters, fans and skaters. I do know that this is an ambitious projects - but there are many of us! Plus, as far as I can tell, NO ONE is doing analiysis data analysis whatsoever. So anything that we present, as long as it is objective and a good analysis, is already interesting. Specifics on this project: we will need people to do the following: Phase 1: * data collector / data manager: ideally in this mix we have some fan with FS knowledge, some with CS skills(to scrap data from ISU and related competitions, for example). Detailed technical data, skater data, judges etc would be best * statisticians: I'm one, more needed Phase 2: * report writer: format, edits etc * PR team: disperse results to influential reports, broadcasters and major sites Right now we need people in phase 1. If you're in, please reply below (say briefly what skills you have and what role you want). Then we can organize a private board on this matter. I hope this project will take off!
  8. @Yolo3a: I think you meant to say "silly". (Yuzu's use of 'baka' is best translated as "she's so silly"). @yude: Thanks for all the quotes from all these other athletes. I'm a fan of many of them, so it's great to hear that they all admire Yuzu. Good athletes in solo sports where you compete against yourself (FS, gymnastic, archery, shooting etc) have hearts and heads made of steel. There isn't a physical opponent in front of you. Your performance comes down to split seconds. If you fail, there is only yourself to blame. No team mates, no external factors. This mental battle differs from person to person. Some are just so blissfully ignorant and can zone out anytime. But Yuzu is so incredibly attentive to details, so outgoing and eloquent, that his mental battle must be ten times more difficult. With all that, to come out on top in GFP 2015, and then AGAIN in PC 2018, he is truly an immortal. His mental strength is outrageous. If champions are made of steel, then he is made of diamond. I hope some psychologist will do an in-depth study of him, for us mortals to look up to. This is a while ago, but I just love the analogy http://the-real-xmonster.tumblr.com/post/171635324499/hi-alice-just-wanna-squeal-about-your-description Shoutout to Alice the-real-xmonster. (I remember seeing your handle name here once but I forgot - sorry!) I totally agree: of these analogies with physical things, his story is most attractive precisely because he is a walking, breathing human, with outbursts of emotions like all of us. We can only resort to super relatives and comparisons because we lack words to describe him.
  9. That was awesome, thanks! Helps a lot for newbies like me in recognizing the steps and spins. Btw, I didn't notice this earlier, but his hair made him look like he just got out of bed. For all we know, maybe he did just get out of bed...
  10. Don't know if this has been shared. I find it hilarious that people are so interested in what he ate. The man himself said he doesn't care about food... https://www.facebook.com/groups/1610393525875114/permalink/2040931166154679/ However, now that I have this recipe, I sort of want to try it myself.
  11. Where did Brian say this? (Sorry I missed it. I thought I've been doing well in keeping up with this thread, but clearly not).
  12. Well yeah, but people can say whatever they want. Why care? (Especially in this age of fake news). If someone said that Yuna's Lutz is wrong, I'd like to see them do a correct one in front of a judging panel.
  13. I totally agree with @xeyra. I can see @meoima's point, but really, is it necessary to justify the "why" of love? Whatever the reason that turned you into his fan, be it the emotions, the personality, the techniques,... that's what matter most. If one feels like they want to learn more on the technical aspects, they should learn how GOEs are awarded, because those criterion represent what the entire field of figure skating consider important for a jump. The minute details of "how skater A does it" do not matter at all, as everyone's body is different. What matter is how many GOE boxes they check, and on this aspect, Yuzu's records are undeniable facts.
  14. Thanks for sharing these fancams! I sometimes find fancams better than the official vids. They make me feel closer to him. And the excitement when he comes closer to the camera is unbeatable. I really want to see him in a live competition but it's next to impossible... So fancams are the next best thing (after live streaming).
  15. I'm not sure that he moves his goal posts. (We fans certainly moving them in our fantasies). I think he has always been super clear in interviews date way back (eg: Kenji no heya): Sochi, PC, 4A. He had that ideal skate (GPF 15). So except for 4A, I think he has had it all when it comes to FS. In one interview he said that there's no meaning if the 4A is not landed in competition. So, assuming that he succeeds the 4A, I'm sure that he would put it in. An ideal script for us would be: he starts the 4A at Skate Canada, succeeds but messes up other parts, ended up coming 2nd (again), get all worked up, and delivers killer performances for the rest of the competition. It's clear that he has other passions as well: in a couple of interviews he said he wants to try other sports after FS (archery etc). He could go to the summer olympic as an archer... (OMG that would be sooo cool). But I can totally imagining him doing ice shows for a long time (and put together meaningful, moving pieces).
  16. @Anya Thanks for the explanations on the ** episode! Thanks to all the older Yuzu fan generations to explain the history of this forum. (And sorry for subjecting you guys to unpleasant memories). I love the vibe of this group - thanks to all the admins/moderators and keep up the great job!
  17. That's so inspiring! And, @Serafine, your boyfriend is so so cool! My husband is also the calm type. A bit too calm to be a fanyu, but he would watch all of yuzu's performances with me, so I'm content with that. Surprisingly I almost managed to convert my dad. It didn't take much - we watched PW together, and my dad was blown away. We got interrupted and his visit was short. But I feel that I have a great chance next time. I'm now encouraged - I'm going to try my mum next (maybe my mother-in-law too).
  18. A bit off topic, sorry, but... what happened at Golden Skate that led to this forum? I'm surprised that there's still an active thread on Yuzu at GS (and it seems to have a positive vibe).
  19. I'm in a middle of a personal campaign to spread Hanyu amongst friends and family. Just curious how successful everyone else has been, and please share cool stories and tips!
  20. Hooray! I'm the first person to vote in the future category! I became a fan of him like... 2 weeks before Pyeongchang. As a former athlete I follow the summer games quite a bit, but never the winter one. I missed the Rio adrenaline rush, so I thought I'll checkout the winter one for consolation Anyway, so, I read an article on "who to watch out for during the olympics". Yuzu's bit sounded interesting, so I went on to see Sochi (R+J). My first impression was: is this the men or women's event??? But this blend of gender performance intrigued me, so I went on to watch a few others. Watched some of his interviews and my respect for him shot up I've read many top-athelete interviews, trained with some of them even, have a few heroes, but NO ONE is like Yuzu. He is not from this world. His kiddo days did resonate with other top athelete stories, but his unique challenges really made him the sole inhabitant of Planet Hanyu. Then came NHK SEIMEI. Down the rabbit hole I went to discover the Yuzu Wonderland.
  21. Thanks - I wasn't sure. I lack certain vocab plus a lot of the kanjis... Got to study more. N.
  22. Great - it worked! Thanks so much! Yep. Apparently 2000 "Samantha girls" pooled their $ into this. (Are these loyal customers or employees, I can't tell) I'm impressed - it's not a top-down directive from some far-sighted marketer at all. They are still thinking about where to put them (the boots), but they said that it will be somewhere with lots of visitors (to raise awareness about 3.11). I'm so impressed that 2000 people managed to raise like... 80 thousand bucks. They're so generous!
  23. The guy said that it had some fake bids, but it was a great result and they are in debt to Yuzu. He had some comment about the amount being the most something ever, but I missed the key kanji.. It wasn't explicit in the news segment (or I missed it), but they said that this is "Hanyu's favorite pair of boots that made history". I wonder if they are the pair of boots he wore at the Olympics? Anyway, retail price is ~ 700USD. And, oh, Samantha Thavasa's stock price hasn't gone up yet... maybe we should buy some?
  24. May I ask how does the streaming party work? (What are we watching exactly...?)
  25. Thanks so much, @kaeryth! I was looking for this too. I got confused between this one and the other NHK documentary that everyone bashed (the one aired just before the Olympic, feature Shoma eating stakes etc). Edited: @kaeryth: the video doesn't work for me (it says private content...) Any clues? Btw, I really admire those of you who don't speak Japanese at all yet still watch all of these documentaries unsubbed. (Livestream even!) That's DEDICATION guys!
