Grand Prix assignments and how they work
wingman replied to sublimeskating's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Why does it matter 1/ We may want to buy pre-emptive tickets as we can do them now (eg: SkC/ RoC / -- anything but NHK, that's probably a bloodbath) 2/ The glory of "See?! I told you so!" 3/ To raise our post count 4/ Exercise our freedom of speech on the Internet How we predict: extrapolate from past data, attempt to go into Feds and the Overlord's minds, tea leaf reading, mushroom, you-name-it. For me it's definitely 1. I really want to see Yuzu live at a competition (ice shows just won't do). And I can't afford to travel more than once per season, realistically speaking. -
Proposed changes for next season

Ok, I must admit that I did not read the ISU rulebook (too intimidating / convoluted for me). Here's what I'm wondering: now that there are 6 bullets but goe ranges from -5 to +5, how does the "bullet ticking" convert to GOE? Is there a rigorous formula eg: * no bullets ticked = 0 * 5-6 bullets ticked = +5 * some bullets ticked as "failed" -->minus GOE ? In the old system I find the minus somewhat arbitrary. Obviously if they fell then something must have gone wrong somewhere, but the criterion for what constitutes -3/-2/-1 was not clear to me. -
Yeah seriously, 6th is great! I'm not sure Vietnamese would be that familiar with Jpop (it obviously depends on the population asked). Manga is very popular in Vietnam - Doraemon, Detective Conan, Dragon balls etc. As @VyVy99 said, I'd suspect that the top people are Fujiko / Gosho Aoyama by a huge margin. (I learned Japanese thanks to Gosho!) H&L!!! (tears of joy) Though it seems that H&L was used as music for the paralympic in Nagano, so maybe that's why he chose it. I hope he regain all his jumps soon. Shoma's costume is kind of cool. For a second I thought he just had elaborate bodypaint on him. That would be amazing too pull off.

This is hilarious! Where and when is this test from?

@Hydroblade you can just use my formula instead. Or, wait a few years until it applies, if needed.

The Great Glittering Planet Hanyu Glossary (or welcome in fandom lingo)
wingman replied to EisElle's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
Sorry if this has already been asked but I couldn't find it in the dictionary. What does "sQUAD" mean? (or "SQUAD")? Do we mean the usual suspects who have a lot of quads in their program, or is this supposed to be some acronym for something else? -
But you see, the problem is he's not in Toronto to go out. He's there to train. He had the opportunity to do all the touristy stuff ages ago, and he didn't. Can't see why he would do that now. Still, I hope that he can continue being somehow anonymous in Toronto and get some peace.

The Great Glittering Planet Hanyu Glossary (or welcome in fandom lingo)
wingman replied to EisElle's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
This is great!! Thanks @LadyLou for starting this! Back when I was a new fan it was a bit tough to figure out what all the stuff meant. Like, it took me a LONG time to figure out what LGC stands for Some small things I want to add: * shortcuts for programs: POTO = phantom of the opera, LGC = let's go crazy, R+J = romeo and juliet, Fred = Chopin Ballade No. 1 (though I don't see people use this very frequently - it did appear on a planet banner at a competition, right?). * paprika and all that stuff (thanks @Hydroblade for explaining this to me in the first place! You should do it again here - and, do advertise your Daily Spread Eagle! It's an essential part of the planet) * pooh references...? (eg: back to the forest?) -
Lol at the conclusion ("from now on I will buy (P&G) products!"). Speaking of Hanyuconomy! How can his sweat be odourless??? He must be squeaky clean all the time, or that his clothes are made of amazing materials, or both. Yuzu never ceases to amaze me.
-
@yuzuangel Where on Earth did you find those weird fashion things??? Yep, watched the documentary too. The actor sort of grew on me in the end. Poor guy, he had a big shoe to fill. I had a huge cringe at the beginning only. (After all, that guy was shown only a few times). This documentary is kind of junky. But it's nice to see a compilation of Yuzu's footage. (So yeah, not much is new. If you don't want to see some guy impersonate Yuzu on TV then you can skip it). ETA: nevermind - @kaerb just did a superb translation. So yep, read that, watch some old Yuzu footage, and it'll be better than the docudrama itself.
-
No, he just talked about the kiss. They want to know if he will do the blow kiss again this year, and he said well it's fine if it makes people happy. Haha, poor Yuzu, got teased.

With all these Aussie reference - it reminds me of his first-class gift ticket from ANA. I wonder if he and his family would come to Australia? (Seems like a reasonable destination: far enough from the media hype, common vacation spot for Japanese, and long enough flight to enjoy first class). Anyway, if he does come I won't stalk, but would love to know where he goes (or if he likes Melbourne better than Sydney, lol). Ok, totally OT... Alright - my mission: The first competition of Yuzu that I see live, I will throw a Weetbix box on the ice.
-
Hang on, where's your Aussie spirit? I would take 7 weetbix with milk over Yuzu's breakfast! And on the Habu vs Hanyu: that's interesting! I always thought that Habu is the default reading.

I don't think Yuzu is super reserved. He has good interaction with Nobu, for example. He's so into being the spotlight, talks all the time (as far as I could tell from interviews with others), so I would imagine that's just how he is in a group. Shoma would be a better example of a reserved person. It's just that Yuzu basically works all the time (trains, competes, do CM, do PR, etc etc). He interacts with Javi in Toronto, where he has his "work" mindset on. Yuzu keeps his work and private life very separate (key to success as ninja!).
-
Oh I know which one you meant. But I don't think he said tiny, didn't he say "egui"? I think he probably meant how cool it is (like, super fit, 6 packs and what not). I'm not surprised with that body fat percentage. He would do so well in an anatomy class - basically just have to look at his own body to see the muscles. ETA: Ah wait ok - I think this is exactly what you meant. I'm confused.

Grand Prix assignments and how they work
wingman replied to sublimeskating's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Hmm... I would guess that Yuzu wants a vs Nathan at the GPF, but not necessarily earlier. I still think it's a given that he will attend NHK. He's been doing NHK for every single year after Sochi. For the other comp, I'd guess SkC or 4CC, simply because he hasn't got a gold there. I am 100% that at the bottom of his heart he wants one. (Didn't he say in one interview that he put the SkC silvers next to his bed?) Between SkC and 4CC... SkC is a/ closer to home and b/ happens before NHK, so it's a good place to try out programs. So in short, Yuzu = SkC + NHK. -
Yeah same. I like his smile, it's very genuine. But I don't think he is particularly handsome. (Seems like a blasphemous thing to say here though). To me he's the #1 athlete and the #1 human being. I love that killer look he has in competitions. Can't care less about his eyelids.
-
Is the association then that Yuzu spends a lot of time on the ice + he skates around fast (so there's lots of cold air moving)...? Poor Yuzu, he's being dragged into poor demonstrations of evolutionary biology.

@Toni Yes, #MeToo! I'm not sure if we should do it under his name though... We can certainly mention in our individual stories that we were inspired by him. But there are plenty of haters of #MeToo and I don't want to randomly associate Yuzu with a movement unless if it's his own explicit initiation.
-
Add to this: I agree with @Neenah: never fight hate with hate. Also to be clear:by "fighting back" I mean to share our stories: of love, hope, hurt, perseverance, desparation, understanding, sympathy, empathy. If we have journalists here: one effective way to shut the haters is to do a cover story about them. Often times they are hateful because the world hasn't been so kind to them. Once their story has been heard and sympathized with, they can turn into the decent human that is present at our very core. This is also why trolls are so hard to fight: they seem to be some invisible mob, so we can't exercise our sympathy. Let's attach some faces to them. You can do it mentally (ie: relate the trolls to a particular troll you know in person). Sorry, this is getting OT...

@Toni: I appreciate you raising this topic, since I did not know about it in the other thread, and did not really dwelved too much on Yuzu's comment (I'll explain a below in a bit) . @kaerb: I absolutely agree with you: we should work hard as a community to be a forum of love and support, to Yuzu, figure skating and other skaters. It is refreshing to see an online forum without hate - it really restores my belief in humanity. On what else we can do: if it is as @Toni pointed out that Yuzu wants us to discuss cyber bullying widely (not just him but the experience of others), then why not start a hashtag? #MeToo has been very successful, on a subject that everyone thought was unchangeable. Why not do a #MeToo for cyber bullying? Especially on JPN twitter. Cyber bullying is 1) rampant, 2) threatens the Internet, spews hate, makes people irrational and only talks to people of their own view, thereby wrap us up in a perpetual confirmatory bias, 3) induces stress and depression in victims, and 4) we are all victims. So why not fight back? Everyone can relate. Finally - I'd like to point to an attitude that's common so far on cyberbullying: "it's ok, it's how the Internet works, let's just get over it". Imagine saying this to a victim of sexual harrassment, domestic abuse, schoolground abuse; victims of stalkers, hate mails etc... It's clearly unacceptable, but we are all doing it. (I must admit, that's my initial reaction too. I thought: "Poor Yuzu, but that's just the Internet, and I believe that he is strong enough to overcome it"). Yes, victim consolation is very important (and I always think it should be done first, and continuously). But it's time for us all to hit back. How about a #getoverit or #it'sjustatroll tag? p/s: 6 new replies after I'm done typing this.... what a thread!

Thank you @sweetwater and @KatjaThera - these a great recommendations. I'm planning to travel Japan next year and have meant to ask this question too. I'm worried though that I cannot find all these posts again in a year time (who knows how many pages we would have reached by then - plus maybe other people want to add recommendations). Should we start a "Yuzu japan travel guide" thread? (Pretty please, dear admins?)

Wow - that's DEDICATION from you to replicate that drink. I have such low tolerance for sugar that I always read food labels. I know the optimal amount of sugar for my drinks: 7g per 250ml (a cup). Most people I know prefer 12g. (Orange juice, for instance, is ~ 18g). For ice cream, on the other hand, my optimal amount is about 16g / 250ml for neutral flavors, 18g for sour ones (eg: lemon). This is because cold and acidic food taste less sugary, so at 12g or so you can't even detect that the ice cream is sweet. Most store bought icecreams are 22-25g though... Ghana's milk chocolate seems to be ... ~ 25g sugar per bar. So, ignoring the lactose from the milk, this would be 25g per cup. That's pretty sweet...

At the end of that it looks as if he has and ear ring on his left ear. (Of course it's just a visual illusion but now I can't get over it...
