  1. The truth is, the -5+5 % of BV GOE and lower BV on jumps system that is to be implemented next season, if Yuzu remains after 2018, theoretically should actually benefit skaters like him who have so much quality in their jumps. But the judging will still depend on human beings with their own agendas, as long as it's the Federations nominating judges. I read recently at FSU that someone compared judging in speed skating and figure skating and the latter was a lot more biased because it depended on Federations choosing which judges to send to competitions. And they choose their most biased judges.
  2. Here are the differences in BV between 2008 and 2010: http://deep-edge.net/sov_2010.html And here is ISU's proposed BV for next season:
  3. I meant the 3F, sorry. The 4F did get a decrease below Vancouver values too. And I agree, especially the devaluation of the 4A. I guess they don't really want people to jump it after all.
  4. I love Einaudi but there's so much of him this season! Saw quite a few at the JGP event.
  5. Fun fact: the proposed new Base Values for jumps will be lower than what they were before 2010. A 4T was worth 9.8 in 2008, and went to 10.3 in 2010, and now they'll lower it to 9.5. Same with all the other quads and triples (except the triple flip, that one escaped unharmed); all base values will be lower than they were in Vancouver, back when the results there and related controversy made them raise the BV, especially on quads. Now their proposed BVs will be lower than they were even before then.
  6. I don't disagree with your points about the new scale or even the BV reduction. I'm not so optimistic as you are about how effective these changes will be, but I'm willing to wait and see, even if lowering jump base value can help curtail and stagnate technical progress in the sport: the lower BV allied to however the -5+5 GOE will go, might lead people to hesitate on risking certain elements. Less quads in men but also less attempts at 3As and harder combos like 3A3Lo in ladies. I do disagree with the splitting, though. Vehemently. There are alternatives to bridging the gap between PCS and TES that do not involve dividing the sport between technical and 'artistic'. This is the idea I completely disagree with. Change the ways PCS are factored, give more weight to GOE on triples again, give better BV to spins or steps, learn how to actually judge GOEs and PCS, etc. But having two different programs to award two different sides of the sport is the furthest from 'bridging' the gap.
  7. LOL, pretty much. And what would an artistic program involve? No quads, only a few jump passes, spins, steps? And the athletic? Jump a set of difficult jumps including quads and combos? But aren't spins also athletic and technical? Would you only score skating skills on the first, or on the second too? Would skaters have to decide to pursue one or the other? How to judge 'artistic' programs, anyway? Are we going to have to define what 'artistry' is in a rule book?
  8. Yeah, you're right. Still a dumb decision but motivated by money so inevitable.
  9. Aside from the GOE changes, which might work if judges actually use them correctly, the problem with all of these proposed changes is that they're so contradictory to the 'bridging the gap between artistic and technical' idea. Separating programs between technical and artistic? Removing a jumping pass in men but instead of using that time to allow for more choreographic touches, let's also take away 30s of the program duration? Lowering the value of quads for...? They don't know what they're doing!
  10. Exactly. So much of the current problems would be solved by good judging. What's the point of -5+5 GOE when they can't even handle -3+3 properly? So let's save face and pretend our training methods to our judges aren't an issue, or ignore politicking in their scoring, and lower the value of quads because that's the problem!
  11. Well, technically, a lot more quads should be getting negative GOE than they do, but the rules only tend to count for skaters from smaller federations/countries.
  12. Yuzuru and Boyang broke their system in 2015, both by having their TES significantly differ from their PCS, only in different directions. Some of these changes were, like the -5+5 GOE interval, already proposed then as a result. But the system keeps breaking more and more and they're scrambling for further solutions but they can't change anything before the Olympics. And their panic, plus the idea that figure skating must be great in the USA again, is making them have the stupidest ideas.
  13. Also: Yes, why? Isn't the safety of the skaters the issue with lowering the value on quad throws as said in the article? What's easier about throwing your partner up instead of forward?
  14. I guess the purple of the pants was too glaring so it blinded some people. I actually don't disagree with their GOE for quads point, but LOL.
  15. ISU is dumb and doesn't understand the issue at all so they're trying to patch up by making the most brainless decisions ever. Want to bridge the artistic and the technical? Let's separate them and have our skaters struggle with which one to focus on for a medal! And that is without even knowing what an 'artistic' program would be like. If ISU wants to change how artistic programs are balanced to the high TES, they should teach their judges not be afraid to give max GOE to triples not named 3A that meet all the bullets, to actually obey GOE rules on quads, and not make high PCS a consequence of how many quads you have and lower them on anyone without a quad, no matter how good their SS or interpretation might be.
  16. Yuzu fanboy? Flexible as heck? Doing the Hanyu spin in both photo sets? Gotta be the same guy.
  17. His tattoo seems to be in 3D.
  18. I wouldn't know about costume design rights but I have seen lots of inspired by costumes and it doesn't seem to be an issue? Just recently Yulia Lipnitskaya's Sochi SP costume was the inspiration for Moa Iwano's costume and Elizabet Tursynbaeva wore a Yuna-look-a-like costume at Worlds.
  19. Huh, he's not skating to Hisaishi or using the same choreo as H&L, though? Only using a costume as tribute. And using Biellman or IB isn't copyrighted to Yuzu.
  20. Not sure which magazine this is from.
  21. Another tribute! Video linked in twitter.

  23. It got replaced by a resurgence of Moulin Rouge for some reason.
  24. Without counting Ashley's possible Moulin Rouge reprisal, and going only through Seniors programs, here's the count on some of the most used Warhorses of the season: Moulin Rouge/Tango de Roxanne: 8 Swan Lake/Black Swan: 7 Carmen: 5 Turandot: 4
  25. I can't believe 3 Russian ladies decided to all do Swan Lake for this season...
