Team USA

Kind of an inadvertent confirmation Nathan won't be a full-time high level competitor for the next quad. Which is one of the things that holds me back from being his fan. With such a demanding academic load, there's a limit to how much he can develop as a skater.

Is Phil Nathan's PR guy now?

I think he sort of is for Team USA.

He writes articles for icenetwork so I guess that makes him something of a media outlet for USFSA.

(And he's also the one who started all that "balletic" discussion re: Nathan the previous season...)

Haha I don't get the deal with applying to colleges...it's what most 17 year olds do :P and he's like, for sure going to get into all of them I'm guessing, which takes the pressure off a little

Also there have been skaters who've taken college classes part time or have skated while studying full time so...it doesn't really mean anything. He can also always postpone matriculation.

It depends how medical faculties work in the US.  In the UK it's a full on full time course with very little room for manoeuvre.  On the other hand Epke Zonderland in the Netherlands managed to be a world champion on the high bar whilst studying medicine, though I'm not sure he could have successfully trained for the AA and still managed.  I believe they do a pre med course in the US- that might be manageable part time, but one of my children is a medical student and there's no time for even a part time job by 3rd year- it's hard to manage one in 2nd year.  The early years are a massive info dump and then you're in the hospitals and clinics getting a different kind of info dump. It is also necessary to maintain marks of 50%+ in all subjects.  Hard to see how it could fit in with a skating career.

I feel really sad for Gracie but at the same time, if she's actually pulling out of Nationals, well it says enough. I wish her all the best, all the best. Heal well, that's all that matters.
