yuzuangel
SO HAPPYYY BUT I DIDN'T GET UP IN TIME TO WATCH because it was so short (but hey that's a good thing) CONGRATS ROGER!!!!!!! NOW WIN THE US OPEN!!! amazing!!!!!!!!!!! i used to think he'd get 20 slams but now i think he might get MORE. i remember during the US Open one year, i forgot when, probably in 2008-2009ish, when they had a poll that you could text in asking Which of the following will happen first? 1) Roger getting 19 slams. 2) Jelena Jankovic getting her first slam. 3) ... I forget this one .... And the commentators were like "Probably Roger getting 19 slams" which took a lot longer than anyone would've expect to come true BUT IT DID!!!!! SO HAPPY. And Jelena Jankovic hasn't won a slam yet. NOW IF ONLY THIS LUCK WILL RUB OFF ON YUZU!!
sallycinnamon
Congratulations, Roger! What a champion! It is just a privilege to watch the GOAT playing and winning all these tournaments! And he never won a GS without losing a set, now he did it, which makes it all even more fantastic. I respect him so much! I don't think his 19 Slam (or 20...or 21...) + 8 Wimbledon victories will ever be surpassed I also hope that Cilic makes a strong comeback because it was really sad to see him in a form like this, and crying in the 2nd set-I respect him for not giving up! He's a great sportsman too.

Now everything is revolving around the World Championships here, there are lots of athletes, team members, fans and volunteers in the city, it's just exciting! I've been to one water polo match so far, which was amazing! Water polo is very popular here as the men national team is the most successful team ever - I was growing up watching them winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals, their popularity is incredible! They are threated here as half-Gods. Tomorrow I'm going to the Synchronized swimming free combination event (I won't see the mixed duet final though) and then I have tickets for women water in the evening. I couldn't go to diving events but I enjoyed watching them in the TV too. And next week, besides another water polo match, I'm going to a couple of swimming events too! I can't wait Here is a pic from the men's water polo match -- the arena was full.

This is Hajime Miura, multiple world champion and Japanese national champion and lots of other kinds of champion and he is amazing (and a pretty gosh darn adorable kid.) sallycinnamon
Thanks for posting it @SparkleSalad, it's just fascinating! I made some research and Japan leads the World Yo-Yo Contest with 76 gold medals so far USA is the the second with 26 golds. Besides his technical abilities, this kid has good performing skills too! Adorable.

Adorable. So adorable. I lived through a pretty serious yo-yo boom in primary school - light up, sparkly, glow in the dark, noise-makey - we were all mad on them but it was nothing like this. I think a lot of it is thanks to YouTube. The internet is so fantastic for advancing hobbies and skills. You can watch anything anywhere anytime for inspiration rather than being lucky enough to be around the right people at the right time. I wonder if the speed at which sports like figure skating are advancing technically isn't affected by it, too. There seems to be something obsessive in Japanese culture that leads to mastery and perfection of even the simplest tasks. (Fun segment on dancing parking lot attendants that should be a sport, starts around 22min here). I really want to crack what that is. In the Meiji period Japanese people were sent over to America to study the ways of the industrious American worker (how attitudes have changed - reversed, even!). I think it would do everyone a lot of good to have a similar cultural exchange now, if only for the prospect of more yo-yo medals.

Those were lightning and very colourful yo-yos, and everyone had at least one. I loved playing with it too. But if I remember correctly, it went out from fashion very quickly....I think my yo-yo broke and then I didn't purchase a new one. The internet is really a very good place for developing things like hobbies. I can also imagine that the younger generation of skaters watch videos and get inspiration from others. 8 hours ago, ralucutzagy said: Sorry for the bad news! Fast recovery, Nole! sallycinnamon
Waseda student Daiya Seto won a bronze medal in the 200 m fly event at the Aquatics World Championships. He is the defending world champion of the 400 individual medley which he won twice (2013, 2015) so far. He can defend his title again on Sunday. ETA: he won the bronze medal at the 400 m medley on Sunday, so he finished Worlds with two medals. Congratulations!

kaeryth
I don't follow either of these sports but I found this to be cute (and interesting)... A diver (Tom Daley, 2017 World Diving Champion) and a gymnast (Nile Wilson, 2016 Olympic high bar bronze medalist) tries out each other's sports. There are many divers who used to practice gymnastics.
