A bit off topic but not too much as it relates to Yuzu having a heart of gold.

Recently someone on Reddit mentioned Yuzuru being the "Keanu Reeves" of figure skaters when it comes to being a gent and never badmouthing anyone, and I just loved the comparison so much I had to share.

Edit: This could actually be one of you on Reddit haha

Why did I always like Keanu Reeves without knowing his personality and why could I never get myself to speaking of Javier as "Javi"? Can't explain it but maybe it's the same unexplainable reason why I instantly fell for Yuzu 4 years ago. Probably most fanyus have such a - what is it - sixth sense?

At this point it's starting to feel like you guys just want reasons to be upset and make everyone miserable. Is there really a reason for all the negativity that goes on for pages and pages here while nice things are just skipped over?

For some baby Fanyus this is a bad time to become a fan haha. I expected the negativity and i think we should try to see it from their perspective. Most of us had the fortune of becoming fans before Great Hanyu Debacles and we didn't feel his permanence in the sport "threatened" as a lot of new fans might be feeling right now.

That said, precisely because a lot of us have already gone through many Hanyu Debacles (and the Big Pandemic Drought), we are mostly like this:

SCP-457 Taking a Hiking Trip in Bikini Bottom | Bikini Bottom Meme on ME.ME

Which leads me to this next point.

:dancingpooh:Baby Satellites! :dancingpooh:

Some of our staff already posted it but just so it doesn't get buried in the conversation, there is a plan to help us make it through the drought!

And hopefully, this will help you understand his journey a bit more and dispel some of the negativity. The first post-Olys #YuzuSkatingParty!

It's part of a series and many people will be commenting on the chat on Twitch, so it will be the perfect opportunity to ask questions and catch up with Trollzuru :YuzuPoohLove:

To be fair, Yuma is now what, 18 years old? He has amazing potential and I am sure Yuzu is relieved there is a strong man representing Japan, that he can rely on. I'd even go so far as to speculate, that since he had Yuma and Shoma on the Oly team, it was easier for him to focus on 4A challenge, since the odds for at least one medal for his country was almost 100%.

Yuma will grow into a better skater, you can see he watches Shoma and Yuzu and aims to improve. Yuzu is another level and has been since very young, but let's also look at the bright side of Yuma coming up.

All these young kids (Yuna, Kao, Shun) have amazing potential. The one with the most potential IMO is Kao.

SS-wise, Yuma is really good. TES wise, His axel and sal are light and flowy, his toe looks nice, his spins are also nice, his lutz and flip are s****y but get praised anyway (and will be upgraded to fake quads).

At 18, Yuzu was >>>>> Yuma in TR and >>>>>>>> in PE and IN.

I don't think Yuma has been able to improve the way Yuzu did at the same age (not that his scores tell you so). Then again, how many Yuzus are there?

The one thing Yuma has but Yuzu does not is constant support from JSF.

Is he going to get better the Yuzu way or is he going to climb to the top and soon regress like Shoma? Only time can tell.

PS: I don't think it was easier for Yuzu to pursue the 4A because Yuma and Shoma were there. The 4A is his dream. He continued on the past 4 years and came to Beijing because of it. Even if the Olys team did not have Yuma and Shoma, that wouldn't change.

Oh, I do think he'd go for it in any case. But from my observation, results for Japan are very high on his priority list, so having a solid back up on the team would alleviate some of his concerns, I imagine.

Yuzu really is loved in China, isn’t he? Nathan Chen? Not so much.

Most of you probably know that Nathan has been criticized for being a “traitor” in China, but I had to laugh at (and agree with) the comparisons of his performances at the Olympics to those of Yuzu.

https://www.news18.com/news/sports/figure-skater-nathan-chen-faces-backlash-in-china-for-representing-us-at-winter-olympics-4785743.html

"According to the South China Morning Post, Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu enjoys massive support in China and was praised for his performance on social media. Meanwhile, the users came down heavily on Nathan and took digs at his performance at the winter games.

"Despite winning his first Olympic gold in the individual figure skating, Nathan's performance was called 'acrobatics of a circus monkey' by one user. Whereas, another user compared his skills to that of Yuzuru and wrote that Yuzuru had 'both beauty and power, that is ballet on ice.' He targeted Nathan and said that his performance was 'Like that of an ape.'"

Buy it absolutely! I have been documenting Yuzu things on the current Yuzu Diary and it has become my treasure. I was even worrying what to do after the current Yuzu Diary expires (April.3.2022). So I would say go for it!

They're so fluffy. Have you seen the compilation video a fan made of Yuzuru basically monitoring Shoma to keep him engaged? Lol!

I think it's safe to say, and not remotely negative, that Yuzu has long had affection, or something similar, for Shoma.  Shoma was about half his height the first time they really skated together.  And Shoma notoriously would fall asleep or look like he was asleep at press cons.  Yuzu looked after him like an older brother would (a good older brother -I've had both kinds myself).  Siblings have rivalries and their rivalry has been more a friendly one than an adversarial one.  And there is a mutual admiration.  While Yuzu certainly would have preferred taking the #1 spot at Japan Nationals in the 19-20 season, I truly believe he was genuinely happy For Shome.

I would agree. I feel they were both genuine in their compliments at Nationals where Yuzuru praised Shoma for winning and Shoma kind of sheepishly chuckled that he only could because Yuzuru was tired lol.

There is an old, old, clip of both of them super young in juniors, I believe and Shoma just...toddles up onto the podium. Even then Yuzuru was watching him close as if concerned he may stumble off.

Both my mom and I have become hardcore Fanyus after the Olympics this year. My mom has watched Yuzu's gala skate at least 4 times and so have I.  My mom and I were both born in China and immigrated to the US. I still starkly remember China-Japan tensions when I was a kid in China. In school, the teachers referred to the Japanese soldiers in WWII as "Japanese demons." It's very heartwarming to me that Yuzu is so popular in China even though he is a Japanese skater.

Also, I've been sad about Yuzu's losses to Nathan over the past few years, but I now think of Nathan as a successor to Yuzu. Without Patrick Chan and Plushenko, there would be no Yuzu. Without Yuzu, there would be no Nathan.

This is a really nice thread about Yuzu, FS and the sad corrupted story after 2018

Looking at how Americans have spread this narrative of "Nathan the successor to Yuzu" and then recording tributes to Yuzu before the start of the games, reminded me of "history is written by those who have killed heroes". Sigh.
