I guess because he typically gets more downtime in Toronto than in Japan. Though with Canada being so in the know about skating you'd think he'd be recognized more. I bet he had proper security when he got to Japan Even my Japanese teacher here in DC knows who he is and she was super excited when I brought him up in class.

It would be personal attacks on a skater or member. Post your response and I'll let you know if it has to be edited.- 6,825 replies

We're still discussing, just no bashing of skaters or members. This should not be the place to villainize anybody.- 6,825 replies

General Skating Chat

I meant it in a sense that he wouldn't wait on it because he will do whatever he can regardless of what people think is or isn't fair or regardless of what the criticism is. He will continue to do what is in his best interests and that's aim for an OGM right now even if it's a 4 flutz which will give him more points that a 3 flutz. Judges aren't going to follow the rule book every time like they should and that's been the nature of the sport since forever. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but it's an near given as unfortunate as that may be. And Nathan's short last year was great, so he is capable. I had no problems with that scoring highly. It's just a matter of how much he'll have to sacrifice for 6 quads in the long.- 6,825 replies

General Skating Chat

Shoma isn't in this for anybody other than Shoma. He is the one working everyday for it. He is the one that has to skate it. It's his dream. Everybody doesn't have to like it, but someway or another all of the heavy hitters are in cross hairs for their decisions and strategy. People don't think it's fair when you can repeat programs. People don't think it's fair when you skate to the same style or layout. People don't think it's fair when you can land a bunch of quads with hardly any choreography or transitions and still get good PCS scores. None of that will matter to any one of them as long as they have gold around their neck and come home to a heroes welcome. It's not worth as much and he hasn't had as much success on it in practice.- 6,825 replies

Because he is in the conversation for Olympic gold now and who knows what could happen between now and 2022? You strike while the iron is hot and take your opportunities when you can (especially rare ones like this one) because you never know when they'll be there for you again.- 6,825 replies

Nobody here has a camera on Shoma every time he takes the ice to know exactly what he's working on and when he's working on it. It's been acknowledged that fixing an edge is a slow process. Just because he isn't doing a great jump here doesn't mean he isn't trying.- 6,825 replies

Yeah because at the end of the day, when you have a horse in the race (or two) that's the opponent of the very person you're criticizing that automatically excludes your opinions from being completely neutral to anybody but like-minded people, even if you have valid points. That's just fandom. Shoma's playing the game how he can play the game and it isn't to please anybody but the panel handing him the scores. And I'm pretty sure Shoma will bring this jump to the GPF since he's the hometown kid.- 6,825 replies

It took Raf until this 4CC to get Yuzu's autograph and I'm sure he sees him often enough!
-
I was there at that point, lol. But I had also met him before. We weren't too far from the entrance and I remember the group was trying to make sure we weren't saying anything explicitly about him. One thing you have to be very well aware of at these events is that skaters are everywhere and can pop up at any minute. I snuck into the ice dance free to see the Shibs skate and I was in the corridor. Who ends up behind me without me having a clue? Misha Ge! I saw Yuzu after the medals and he bowed at us but they kept it moving. They were either headed to the press conference or they'd just finished. For Boston, after the the medal ceremony my friend and her sister in law who had kick ass Row A tickets were directly next to this elderly Japanese lady who dropped her scarf on the ice. Yuzu skated by, picked it up, gave it to her, and he politely nodded. My friend's sister in law was recording at the time and Yuzu looked so angelic and sweet. I don't think anybody else has that shot of him from that angle. I should have stayed on her about sending that video to me. I don't know if anybody has video of that moment but I did record it myself from the exactly opposite side of the arena. I just never uploaded because Boston was such a drag.

I got to meet Nate. He is also really nice and approachable but I also think you made the right call. If they look particularly busy, I wouldn't bother. I saw Shoma coming back from practice but I didn't bother him because he seemed in a big rush to get to his room. I saw Sui/Han who I ADORE and wanted to congratulate them on winning, but they were headed to the elevator as well so I let them be. And then later I met Xue Shen (one half of my all time favorite pairs team) and she was friendly so that made up for it lol.

I dunno. I guess I'm a people person. If I have a chance to meet one of my faves and tell them I enjoy their work, I do. But I'm very composed about it because they are people too. I had a great time in Helsinki meeting so many skaters and their coaches who have I admired for years as well as getting to speak with them about the sport and get some interesting insights. I met Caro's coach in the elevator and we had a great conversation and when she learned I'd seen Caro as far back as 2003 at Worlds in DC, she was floored. I met Jason Brown on day one and his parents and they remembered me all weekend when we'd bump into each other. You just have to learn to read the room. I got to meet Kevin Reynolds and we ended up chatting in Japanese. Rohene Ward actually approached me (we had a run in at the arena and he remembered me from that), haha. He was really nice and I was telling him how I used to work at one of the rinks where Michael Weiss trained in the DC area and it turns out he trained there as well! And of course it was a pleasure to meet Tracy Wilson on the heels of Yuzu's win (inside I may have wanted to bow to her like Yuzu did in the K&C, but I didn't ). There were happy faces all around. Just about everyone was very pleasant and gracious. I guess I've met and interviewed so many Hollywood celebs that figure skaters aren't really ones to freak me out. Now I'm feeling bad that I never finished my Helsinki tumblr post. Maybe I'll do it this week as an amp up for the new season lol.

I thought the same thing. I was ready to go off about how they were producing Torino knockoffs (I know that games too painfully well,; yay plush and waaah sasha). But then I was going to joke that Yuzu would then be extra motivated to have a gold medal similar to his Plu-sama. This might be a hint that they are revealing the medals soon though.

I know I wouldn't in an Olympic year where I could very possibly NOT be performing it at the Olympics...and instead at a 4CC or something. I'm sure performing this at the Olys is what he intends to do.

With the help of autotune these days I think anybody can be a singer.
-
I thought that too but his legs are parted. But from the angle her shoulders are almost the same and has and with her looking down she'd be taller when she looked up. Edit: Thanks, Liv.
-
How tall is his mom? They look almost the same height. When I saw her in person in Helsinki she was sitting.

I think people can think what they want about it honestly. I can't pretend skating Chopin three times excites me much and I'm a Yuzuber. But I have accepted it. If anybody roots against him they were looking for a reason anyway and aren't worth the thought or energy. Can't do anything about it. I don't like when people completely backload a program sacrificing good structure and a balanced performance for the sake of points, and I'd like for them to NOT get that 10% bonus for all but 4-5 passes, but I can't fault them for going for it if it helps them strategically as things are now. At the end of the day, my feelings and anybody else's feelings don't matter. Nobody's breaking any rules by doing any of these things in their skating. The chips will fall where they will fall.

It sounds a little different actually...

Not before doing quads of every kind in competition I bet. At least the axel and lutz.

Sonia Lafuente responded in the comments that it was another Japanese skater named Genki.

The white UA I think was older because Brian was thinner and has more hair.

Might need to hit up Plushenko. He's done many a 4t/3t/3lo in his day, so he knows a thing or two about 3lo combos.- 6,825 replies
