Magazines and Photobooks - Recommendations and Reviews
EisElle replied to Lys's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
Hello! I've purchased photobooks 2015-16 and 2016-17 a month ago for 2100¥ (16-17€) and 2300¥ (about 18 €) on amazon.co.jp. I think prices won't be that different in bookstores, maybe a little cheaper but not much. The new 2017-18 photobook on amazon is 2700¥ (about 20€) The Ice jewels Pyeongchang special iirc was about 1200 ¥, tho I guess some pics could be in the new photobook too. Usually the individual issues have lower prices, from what I've seen FS magazines like Ice Jewels, Figure Skaters (huge pages!) and so on are usually in the range 1200-1800 ¥ I wanted to purchase the Pyeongchang Memorial(??? sorry I'm on mobile and can't remember my password to check my wishlist) tho it was pricey, but it was sold out it looked like it had many many pics I've also purchased Yuzuru's books (iirc about 1500 ¥ each) even if I can't understand japanese and now I'm reading the english translation provided by fans I hope you'll enjoy your time in Japan! I'm so envious -
Zhenya she looks good, she looks happy and her english is nice! (not gonna do comparisons LOL) I hope her training will keep going well @kaeryth my dear wild child well, at least she's well...or well enough to skate she's grown so much taller, and after all the rumours I hope she's taking it easy.. and why I'm not surprised she left Eteri? With quads girls + Alyona, it was too crowded there... I'm also a bit sad, tho, she had fought so hard to get there, and she got more consistent and I liked her programs... I'm not sure what Plushy's academy can make for Nastya, but hey, I guess she's gonna have more attention from coaches there (+ they use the best examples for correct technique). Now I'm getting my hopes up that she'll be well and skate at JGP, tho I really don't know what to expect. But the most important thing is for her to be healthy! And happy!

at first glance, my gut said he's the one sitting, so I'm gonna trust that aehm...guys...see who else is there... the harness guy No, of course it's not what you think! maybe ETA: no, seriously, he's probably there for the girl, or...some other skater....not Yuzu I hope
-
that girl is the evil mastermind of selfies go on girl, catch 'em all!!! I wish she could also catch one Boyangman, I'd be so happy
-
LOL they even used Let it go as bgm I'm honestly surprised I haven't cringed that much (tho the first scene on ice was very cringey to me). It makes you think about how many stars need to align to have a skater like Daisuke (or Yuzuru), and how many talents just won't ever get to flourish because of circumstances. And skating is really an expensive sport Oh no, now I'm sad thinking about Jpn ladies and their GP assignments speaking of which (Daisuke T, not the Jpn ladies) I thought it could be interesting for the new fans who are not familiar with him or those like me who have watched some of his program but not become too attached. Of course his fans can walk down memory lane Skaters go through so many hardships, you can't help but admire them ETA under spoiler because potential trigger

Collecting info for Clarificiation with the ISU
EisElle replied to Xen's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
as @Xen said, clearly define what the heck is a 'serious error' that would warrant no 10 in PCS. are all jumps with fall going to get -5 even if they hit some of the positive bullets? If yes, please add: 'jump with fall final goe must be -5', so if judges don't do that we know they haven't read the rulebook. If not, then could there be jumps with fall worth -2GOE because it hits e.g. positive bullets 1, 4 and 6? what does it mean: 'good take off' for bullet 2? I guess it is not about the correct take off edge in F and Lz (that would be merely 'correct' take off, not 'good'). Is it about minimal degree of prerotation, pure toe-pick technique or what? and what is it 'poor take-off'? Toe-hammer and mule kick? Full blade take off on toe jumps? Half a turn prerotation on Lz and F? Slowing down a lot before the jump? A few visual examples would be nice. With explanation, please. And difference between a -2 and a -3. Also, visual example of 'long preparation' for a jump please, with difference between -2 and -3 if a jump has unclear/wrong edge AND poor take off, do the negative goe sum? Meaning it could get -5 even without step out/falls? examples of different degrees of 'weak landing' examples of 'Poor speed, height, distance, or air position' why is it controversial to tell if a jump has preceding steps (and the requirement for the SP solo jump was removed) but judges are supposed to decide without controversy if steps are there to say if a jump checks bullet 4? Or is it supposed to be controversial but no one cares because it's 'only' one bullet? is a single move in the field (one spread eagle/spiral...) for the lenght of the rink enough to qualify for a choreo sequence with 'good ice coverage' (bullet 4)? And 'creativity' is one of the mandatory bullets for ChSq, so maybe some practical examples of a 'non creative' ChSq would be nice. Just to have an idea of what is supposed to be creative. why StSq lv4 +5GOE gets a lower score than StSq lv4 +3 GOE with the previous rules? And why the same happens for some spins? and why ChSq +5 would be worth more, when technical difficulty of ChSq is probably going to be lower than a StSq4? And there is a much higher degree of subjectivity in what a good ChSq. Visual examples of ChSq of different quality are needed. With detailed explanantion. why is the 4Lo considered that much easier than the 4F and 4Lz? If ISU has scientific data to back up that assumption, please make it public, because current data and physics say it's probably wrong. Plus, it's harder to get good GOE on a 4Lo and on a 3Lo rather than on the F and Lz of same number of rotations because it's harder to get the height and lenght without toe-pick assistance. So 4Lo is twice hit, in BV (and GOE are linked to that) and higher difficulty to clear some bullets, one of them one of the mandatory ones, too. Or is bullet 1 also going to be related to the type of jump, too? (Other than the number of rotations, I guess) why is 4A BV so close to that of 4Lz, despite having a whole half rotation more? If ISU meant to discourage skaters from trying it, please say so. The current BV of quads doesn't really reflect the comparative difficulty of the different jumps. for counter-clockwise jumpers, are jumps (not Euler) landed on left foot valid elements? LOL that one too (or better, when they'll start having competent people in key roles, making decent webinars, like the one for ice dance, for example? The one for single and pair skating was a huge mess and didn't clarify a thing) ETA: I was forgetting the most important one why the rules say some bullets are mandatory and then speak about 'guidelines'? In the past seasons judges haven't been able to apply even what were 'mandatory' rules (like: no 10 in a program components for skates with mistakes, 'final GOE of jump not preceded by step must be -3' and so on). Does ISU think it's wise to declare since the very start that the rules are not real rules? Doesn't this leave too much leeway to subjective judging and bias? As if bullets for GOE weren't already unclear on their own, and PCS hadn't already enough subjectivity themselves.... I'd say, start with a 'must'. Subjectivity will get in the way somehow, no need to allow it any more space than necessary. Also, if someone doesn't follow the guidelines, as ISU tells them they can, how can ISU decide if their scores are wrong or not? How can ISU search for bias if there is nothing certain in the scoring?- 17 replies

but we could have TCC Brothers Podium vol II: The New World in Finland, Zuzu senpai and Boyangman edition

LOL meme faces are wonderful because they are spontaneous...Yuzu has such a mobile face... I can see him playing sassy and naughty, but comic on purpose... even his comic dynamics with Nobu aren't really what he'd need for, idk, a Chaplin. I admit I'd be more surprised by Yuzu doing comic than by him going for any latin/hiphop/Bublè/whatever. It would be interesting for sure. But until the day will come, I'll keep my doubts tho now I think about that, he could probably pull off a good Jack Sparrow...kinda want to see that... he played the pirate in an ice show once and it was funny, tho it was a group number, so maybe Yuzu could really prove me wrong... tho for example, I can't see him playing fake dork like Bruno Massot in S/M Cinderella EX or Javi's and Luca Lanotte's Chaplin (despite Yuzu being a real life dork)

so the source isn't chinese? I'm already half-resigned, but I still have hope that suddenly a cryptid Boyang will pop up as a blurry silhouette in the background of a Yuzu with kids selfie... well, true, he would still have 3 years, more than enough, according to Brian's usual timeline to have visible improvements but possibly no Zuzu senpai there At this point, I do hope that if the move is cancelled is only because Boyang didn't want to leave and not because someone else decided to play their games and he was the casualty... Oh well, I'll still root for him tho yes, I'm sad. He and Wakaba were the skaters I really thought would be a good fit at TCC and apparently it isn't meant to be... (now I'm kinda starting to dream for Tarakanova at TCC, which is 100% pipe dream, but hey, strager things have happened...)

the reason why I'd love to see Yuzuru go for a tango, latin or flamenco is because I have hard time imaging him pulling it off and at the same time I'm sure he could, I just don't know how, and I wanna see that because I suspect his how would leave everyone like tho with the short dance for next season it might not sound as fresh LOL The thing I really don't see him doing is go for a character like Javi's...playful, even comic... tbh I don't even want him to try that. While some skaters can pull it off, even excel at that, it's still not my favourite type of skating program (also because it usually involves a lot of posing and exaggerate mimic that most times than not they feel too cheesy to me, or forced). Latin instead, it's a challenge I'd like to see Yuzuru tackle. I love the Overlord of Axel bossing other skaters around into doing what he wants or maybe all he needs to do this but I guess with someone like Scott a firm challenge might have worked better

is it a reliable source? but also for my tcc buddies dreams looking more and more impossible by the minute ETA: again, if it is Boyang's call ok, tho then I'd find it to be quite weird that he didn't say no from the beginning... if fed really wanted to let him have a say in this and he was really so opposed to the idea, why things have even progressed at all? Why Brian expected him to be in TCC in June? and Brian had talked to him in May too... so weird... if it isn't Boyang's call, I'd be even sadder tho. Exspecially if it was because of internal feuds in chinese sports bodies ETA2: and if it's true I hope he'll receive support from fans instead of being attacked
-
Is it confirmed? I'm sad, I loved S/K... she has that special charisma and while he couldn't match that, in their programs they could grab the attention even with mistakes. Past season was unfortunate but I was happy when Ksenia said that they weren't retiring... Maybe in the end he just didn't had enough competitive hunger to match Ksenia's... and he had problems at his shoulder, right? (or was at his back?) That's why they didn't had a good twist, right? Tho I can't remember where I've read this

On twitter I've seen with that photo Yuzu was male and 22 😱 (Sorry I can't find the tweet anymore) So where's the truth? And what is it with all this non-cryptid content????? He keeps spoiling us
-
*tries to imagine pea green LGC costume* NOPE NOPE NOPE last media days iirc he had red/blu skate guards and there was no red in his costumes...as for the old ones he used during the season, new Seimei had teal, much different gradation! and the purple was still minimal

I haven't seen this posted yet ElenaC brings us ITAesp OWG Swan with sub eng what a blessed day and I'm still cackling at Max and Angelo closing comment (about people who doubted Yuzuru and disputable pre-Olys articles) ETA: I've also noticed the link for the Event threads index on top of the Events page, it's great! I'll find it easily now! Thank you admins

he looks so small how can he look so small next to a kid the girl is cuuute, the photo is cuuute, everything is cuuuute good thing Zuzu can't resist cute kids maybe he'll drop one pic with kids per week to keep us well watered till media day
-
that's so gorgeous!
-
I wonder what he did to be thrown out of the rink all the time I bet he was reckless and trying things he wasn't ready to do...And he probably had a very short attention span LOL That teacher probably has so many interesting stories about smol trollzuzu tbh I don't envy her, if Brian is losing his hair because of older&wiser Yuzu, having to deal with a wild mushroom must have been really tough...
-
I'm happy Wakababy is in fighting mode Tho I wonder when would mid-season be? Before Nats? After Nats? I wants to see 3A ladies conquer the world! I guess she'd like to play it safe and see how the scoring goes during GP and maybe if she qualifies try the 3A at the final? Or keep it as a weapon for Nats bloodbath? Tho idk if it's wise to debut the 3A in that comp... Tho I hope she's also working on her flip. If she wants to keep it in the SP the new goe might hit her more if she gets unclear edge (I'm wondering about Kaori's Lz too, I think the deduction is harsher now, right?) Question: has Wakaba jumped 3Lz3Lo in competition before? If not, has she good chances for a clean combo? I know she's a powerful jumper but sometimes her -3T has been borderline UR.. Iirc Yuna Shiraiwa was thinking about 3Lz3Lo, too, right? I'd like to see her get one more GP assignment but I want the NHK host spot for Rika K. Why so many talented jpn ladies and not enough spots?

Why is this off season a race at who provides more drama?

So accurate it hurts Eta: let's hope he can take a break from major injuries from now on

Mmh.... if it's really just Boyang not wanting to go, ok, tho imo it would be a missed opportunity. He can keep working with his old team, of course, but improvement would be slower imo (and judges could be even slower in taking note) maybe reach a plateau. Of course I don't know how good are his coaches, but current situation feels quite similar to Yuzuru under Nanami...did Lori went to China to hold SS classes? But Lori isn't a SS coach like Tracy and SS need long term training even under the best SS coach...heck Yuzuru was far from weak in that department but still he had to take his time to work on them, he still works on them. If it's TCC pulling out instead, is it possible that Brian had been promised Boyang in June, then the training camp thing came up and fed changed program and Brian couldn't have a say? and he thinks it's not ideal to start in August (I could't blame him, tbh) and he's worried fed could bypass him in the future too? It feels less far-fetched than him butting heads with Lori and he has always been pretty clear about how he doesn't want parents meddling too much, so I guess it would be the same if the fed was the one meddling. And he did (politely, I guess) complain that Yuzu had too many iceshows and obligations after Sochi... Tbh this is the only scenario of TCC pulling out that I find plausible. If it's about internal fed wars well, I hope they can plan long term for 2022. It looked like Zhao strongly wanted Boyang in Toronto for more than choreo or a summer camp... (btw Boyang's post, when he was in Canada and worked with Kurt Browning too, sounded as if he was saying thank you and goodbye to his old coaches, or do I remember it wrong? Sure, he talked about Canada not TCC, but still. Was it really only my own wistful thinking?)
-
....ok I hope that second comment was... bad wording or carelessness on Kozuka's part or misunderstanding or something... I'm glad that majority of reactions in Japan are of polite disagreement (any more weird things happening today? last 24-48 hours too many weird news, I can't anymore with this offseason..what a year...splatfests and injuries during cursed season, then wild offseason, add the crazy world cup to the mix...just what the heck happened to the world? Or is it all to balance out the absolute joy of of Yuzu's second OGM? seriously, the only thing that could surprise me now, after all of this, is if Yuzuru announces he's moving to train under Eteri...AND NO SKATING GODS THAT'S NOT A CHALLENGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
-
I...don't.... really know what to say (but nooooo Boyang please go to TCC, your SS and TR and PCS in general will thank you and I wanted that TCC podium in Helsinki and Zuzu watching your 4Lz and you watching Zuzu land 4A...ok I've stepped onto the Fantasyland here, but you get my current feelings) the reasons given by TSL sound so weird and OOC for many of the parts involved (unless it's about Brian wanting more freedom form the fed but the fed sounded enthusiast about the chance to have Boyang there, and why drag Lori and David in the mess?), but their intel on coaching changes have been reliable so far... I wish they weren't I'll be so so disappointed if Boyang doesn't move...proportional to how much happy I was when we had the news...and I'd also be quite worried tbh. His team has done so many good things, taught him well, helped him improve but TCC could make him step up. I can't imagine why the fed and Brian would throw those words about Boyang going to Canada one month only to take them back two month later... why???????????
