She’s 13/14? I read elsewhere people saying that if she wants to get those jumps, win the Olympics at 16/17 and retire and go to college thats her choice and no one should express concern or think it’s a bad idea for a young teenager to be encouraged to pursue these dodgy techniques. Not to mention the harm of too much time in the spotlight too young. It’s wrong for the Russians to do it because Eteri is evil and it’s a hangover from the Soviet system, but it’s fiiine and acceptable, admirable even, for a tiger parent to push their child in this way. Well between Rusfed and USFSA we know where the impetus to make UR and clunky landings acceptable is coming from. What’s the point in having age limits if you’re going to encourage children to do dangerous things anyway?

Junior Skaters of 2018/19 season
Sombreuil replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Igloo World: Team Other Skaters
I wanted someone to skate to the soundtrack of Pride and Prejudice and someone already was- and it’s charming for a junior -
I think he is able to do what Kohei does on the floor and high bar, which is correct his axis in the air for a good landing. They also both have great extension, which makes their performances beautiful as well as technically correct.

It’s the same idea but the computer figure is a bit clunky . I used to wonder whether the MB programme gave Fuji tv the prompt to have a go at measuring the jumps - ice scope.
-
You’re welcome - prompted me to rewatch the whole thing.
-
Closest I’ve seen was Miracle Bodies programme on Kohei where they stuck those motion capture stickers all over him and Koczi when they were making tumbling passes to compare the difference in the way they moved in the air. I always hoped they’d do something similar with Yuzuru

Chen will add a layer of difficulty to his university/sport/life balance by switching coach and training base to Lambiel in Europe.

2019/20 GP Assignments

I can’t help thinking Misha would rather be second to Yuzuru than Chen or Zhou..... -
Nobu makes most of the current crop of male singles skaters look boring and uninspired - such a shame he was so nervy in competition.
-
He does costumes and sportswear and traditional japanese clothes - anything else is sponsor/JSF provision and doesn’t fit - why does this still surprise everyone?

With enormous difficulty- many threads on how hard it is to get tickets in Japan for any event, from ice shows to WC

Sorry he won’t be at Rostlecom with all the fan cams but glad it’s NHK where the cameras should be good. I quite liked Takahashi but will be sad if the younger ones get pushed aside for him - I like the uncles, but the likes of Voronov and Brezina have kept plugging away and had sensational seasons last year while T was off trying other things. Feels like Louis Smith in gymnastics popping back into the team after a spell in the media spotlight when there were younger ones who deserved a chance. At least Dai didn’t pick a pre Olympic year to do it. -
It would be so good if Japan could make some progress in ice dance and pairs.
-
I don’t mind if they do - we get fancams from RC and they love Yuzuru in Russia, I’d rather he went there tbh. I hope Dai doesn’t swipe GP places from those promising young skaters who inspired him to return but JSF being what it is I expect it to happen.

Aaah - I got so annoyed at (I think it was) the Olympics when they tried to make him speak in English . You’ll get a long, detailed, well thought out, illuminating response in Japanese which can then be translated in correct detail by qualified translators if you leave him to speak - if you ask him to talk in English in a PC you’ll get the usual platitudes- try asking Chen to speak French or Kolyada to speak mandarin. English may be the global default setting but at his level there are interpreters and what he has to say is significant and needs to be put across as accurately as possible. I am perfectly willing to wait for a true representation of his actual words rather than a cobbled together ‘english’ comment that doesn’t actually express what he wants to say. Possibly my patience is honed by years of Japanese gymnasts who don’t do English at all.

2019/2020 Season Program Announcements

I can imagine Deniss skating to this - it could be lovely if he can only nail his jumps. Won’t go over too well in the US tho..... -
I don’t think the negative reviews were related to his leaving the Royal Ballet - that was in 2012 and they’ve a far more reliable danseur noble in Vadim Muntagirov now. I think the UK press don’t like his politics, his homophobic and fat shaming posts on social media, which got him sacked from a freelance job at the Paris Opera, and his general attitude. The critical reviews I read found his show self indulgent and tedious. He’s a wonderful dancer but without the discipline of a company he’s free to do what he wants without anyone telling him - actually, that’s not very good, think again, and he lacks the self critical characteristic that might help him rein himself in. It’s a waste of a great talent because backers won’t bankroll him indefinitely if his shows disappoint the paying audiences.

It's that time of the year - coaching changes 2019/2020
Sombreuil replied to Fay's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Yikes, I don’t like the sound of this. I felt that Patrick Chan after his comeback in 2015/16, though he had coaches in theory didn’t actually pay much attention to what (if anything) they said to him, and he was another one with a close relationship with his first coach. It really showed in his skating. I don’t think Shoma has PCs level of.... let’s call it self confidence, but I do think he will drift without back up from someone qualified to oversee his training. What about Keiji’s coach as stopgap while he’s shopping around ? -
Not surprised - Team Japan on air agreed Kato was ikemen

Will Eteris language make it through translation or will a Japanese interpreter smooth it into polite directness? -

Well Nobus jumps since retiring from comp have been fabulous so that might be very good for him. -

I think there was an interview on US or Canadian tv with Tracey in which she said it can work but only if they’re both nice people - and underlying that, the coaches are also nice people who care about things like the atmosphere in training sessions and make arrangements to deal with problems of proximity in the run up to important events. Hamada seems to cope with Miyahara and Kihira at the same rink - plus the unheralded Hosoda who also has 3A - there doesn’t seem to be friction there, and the Kobe girls. I suspect it requires the right chemistry - conflict is not necessarily the automatic outcome.
