Now I'm imagining Yuzu (or his mom) dealing with all the issues that arise with being Asian (especially with a foreign accent) in North America and it's kind of pissing me off Like hearing a pair of old ladies just assuming I was a Chinese exchange student who didn't understand English very well and having a very audible conversation about me on the basis of this assumption, all because I was wearing a backpack on a bus headed in the direction of a university (this happened at GPF last year). No, I'm an American tourist who's here to see a figure skating competition, thank you very much. Or all the people who are rude or condescending to you for no reason--which tends to be even worse if you have a foreign accent, which is something that becomes really obvious once you see how people treat your foreign-accented parents. anyway, off topic

I think tends to be especially true of those of us from immigrant backgrounds, who get it all the time, and then get it in reverse when we go to our country of origin. And, if I may mention it, Yuzu's not an immigrant but at the same time, his situation is not exactly dissimilar to our own. Like I said, it's best not to make assumptions about people based on their country of origin. Even people who have lived in one place all their lives may often surprise you.
-
I also agree with this. Yuzu is an adult man with plenty of experience navigating multiple cultural contexts. He is not made of glass and does not need protection from some overenthusiastic fans singing him happy birthday. Give him a little credit! I wasn't addressing the conversation about the best time to sing him happy birthday, which you'll notice I previously said was probably not during competition due to a number of issues. I was addressing the conversation of whether it's okay to sing him Happy Birthday at all, which was making me uncomfortable because of my own experiences with people making assumptions about me based on my cultural background.
-
Maybe it's my inherent Americanness showing, but I am also really uncomfortable with making assumptions about people's preferences based on their cultural background. You might think that because I was raised in America, I would like having Happy Birthday sung to me, but in fact I don't because I don't like being the center of attention. But Yuzu has mentioned he does like being the center of attention, so that doesn't seem like an issue that arises here. People are individuals, not distillations of their culture of birth. I agree the best policy would be if someone could ask him. Also, as someone who has lived on multiple continents and in multiple cultures, I personally really hate it when people make assumptions about me this way. When I'm in Asia, it's "you're American, so you must x" and when I'm in America, it's "you're Asian so you must y." Those assumptions are very often wrong.

Honestly, this is a lot of words spilled over something that at the end of the day cannot possibly be that big of a deal. The worst that could happen is that Yuzu may find it mildly uncomfortable (but probably not according to past Yuzu-and-birthday related experiences) but will understand that fans are just showing their support. There may be a few people from the looking-to-be-offended-by-anything-Yuzu-fans-do crowd, but those people will get offended at anything. It may be mildly embarrassing if Yuzu fans don't organize it well, but we can laugh about that. Idk, just feels like a lot of hand wringing over nothing much.

Eh, really? I can’t imagine actually being upset if Nathan’s fans sang him happy birthday after he skated, even if it was Yuzu’s turn to skate next. That seems like a weird thing to be upset by. They’re just trying to wish him happy birthday. And if you guys did get angry at Nathan’s fans, I would think you were overreacting. Personally, I just think singing it after he does his competition skate might be awkward. It might not suit the mood/who knows how much time the fans would have to sing/I suppose some volatile judge might take offense/if we screw it up it might be embarrassing.

I need this so much. Her 3A is huuuge!

This makes me wonder how if Liza had trained under different circumstances or was younger what a powerhouse she would have been. She's clearly an extremely talented jumper, possibly more innately talented than even Sasha, especially since her body type doesn't lend itself to quick rotation unlike Sasha's currently. But she "grew up" in a time when jumps were less emphasized, and when no one expected that a woman (especially a grown woman) could do a quad, so she didn't have the same opportunity to take advantage of her jumping talent. And now that she's older, she has a hard time receiving the same kind of support as youngsters.

there's only one practice group at GPF but yes, FS practice seems like a good time. or victory ceremony

I hope Yuzu was just cornered by the question and doesn’t actually think anyone was disappointed in him. It makes me angry that this question uses his own fans to make him feel bad. The thing that most fans want above anything else is for Yuzu to be happy, and we would never, ever want to be an obstacle to his happiness in the way the question is suggesting or in any other way. What is there to be disappointed in anyway? That he made one mistake at a competition he won by 50 points? We’re far more happy to see him come out of the competition with functioning ankles to be concerned about that. Did the interviewer do any research? It should be dead simple to figure out general fanyu sentiment about this competition—we’re so happy Yuzu is healthy and seems happy, and the thing we are upset about is the judging. Even when he has a bad competition, we’re not disappointed in him, we are disappointed for him because we know he’ll be upset about it.

it's a good thing he always has those boot covers on, because imo pianos are ugly

Nate usually has better air position and his jumps aren't quite as muscled, that's why they look better. His landings, though still kind of stiff-kneed and without great posture, also don't look as heavy as Samarin's (though he doesn't jump as high so that makes landing lighter easier). Boyang's combo is just as good as Samarin's in terms of size, has equivalent or better landing quality, and is equally lacking in transitions. But unlike Samarin, his lutz edge is deep, he doesn't pre-rotate, and imo his jump looks a bit more effortless.

lol well someone had to break through one day. him looking more stable is why he's getting so much Rusfed support, I guess. they're desperate for a real competitor in men's, it's their weakest discipline. it'll be really annoying if/when he manages to skate his layout clean-ish. If he got 171 for two popped quads (which also prevented him from jumping a 3T combo because Zayak) imagine what he'll get if clean. The PCS will probably go up too, even though he doesn't make an attempt to like, actually have choreo or perform. Same deal with the short. He fell on the 4F and had an ugly landing on the 3A and still got 93. If he lands the 4F he'll break 100 if they keep scoring him like this.

Samarin is super tall so that probably makes it harder for him to control his axis. I notice a lot of skaters with a build like his have similar problems--jumps high, but often out of control.

Yeah the judges somehow managed to overscore him on the FS combo even relative to his already grossly overscored SP combo Yuzu leans sliiiightly forward on his 3A and it's enough to knock him down one GOE point despite his entry, meanwhile Samarin's axis is all over the place and he has no entry transitions but nonetheless his jump is the second highest scoring jumping pass by raw GOE. Also, his landing is clunky and landing posture unattractive, and he demonstrates far less control over his exit edge than Yuzu and Jason. On top of all that a strict panel would have called the entry edge a !

I'm glad Yuzu finally got his +5, but... I even made sure to include the bits leading up to the jumping pass, so everyone could judge that transitions bullet for themselves

don't say such cursed things or else we'll see Brendan Kerry land the world's first 4A

tbh if I were an ISU official I'd play it a bit mercenary and refuse to vote to allow quads in the SP unless excessive PR is defined as an error with an automatic penalty
