Oct. 28, 2019 Yuzuru Hanyu Sponichi Interview ๐
shanshani replied to WinForPooh's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
I think people are just trying to avoid attributing to Yuzu something he didn't mean, especially since the Lutz issue is a controversial topic and no one wants to get Yuzu embroiled in controversy he didn't mean to get embroiled in. Of course, there is another line that supports the idea that Yuzu has concerns about pre-rotation too in the answer to the next question, but it's a bit weaker. It's also only one component of what he said though--it's clear he is unhappy with trends in the scoring of the sport in general, regardless of how his words about the lutz in particular should be interpreted. (Though he feels like his scores at SCI were a win for his vision of the sport, if only a minor one.) I'm not very familiar with the conversations around what he said at CWW (I vaguely remember thinking what he said was ambiguous and hard to interpret, but being concerned for him in case the worst interpretations were true), but it's lame that people were bullying others because they understood his words differently. I don't think that's what's happening here, however. We're just trying to get his words right. (also, mods, can this line of conversation be moved the the spoinichi thread?) -

Could it possibly mean it isn't suitable for him to jump the 4Lz that way? That seems like it would fit the context too (although, alas, it's significantly less spicy) -

lol I haven't thought this hard about how to interpret words since I was doing interpretations of dead German philosophers back in school. Yuzu, provide clarification please -

this leaves the line about something no longer being a lutz untranslated, which I guess means they couldn't settle on how to translate it -

hard agree. plus this is relevant to skating in general although he probably delivers the most polite shade ever now I'm going to congratulate myself that I use clean toe-tap technique on my half-flip and half-lutz. although how would you even excessively PR a half-flip/lutz, the rotation would be done before you even get off the ice- 107 replies

could be translated as "Since young / Since I started skating, I've never been the type of skater that could land these kind of jumps." What was described as "rotating down below" could mean "No matter how hard I practice, I can't rotate my blades on the ice before jumping" we found a better translation here. they seem to agree he's talking about prerotation -

I think you're right This is so validating, tbh. Yuzu is one of us. He shares our opinions. (Also, take that to people who are like "I skate and PR is just how you're taught to do the lutz, all of this is made-up fan stuff just to tear down skaters you don't like"--are you really going to declare Yuzuru Hanyu's opinions as made up fan stuff?)- 107 replies

Oct. 28, 2019 Yuzuru Hanyu Sponichi Interview ๐
shanshani replied to WinForPooh's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
So somethings that stand out now that we have a better translation: 1. Yuzu is worried about the trend towards increased technical difficulty's impact on everyone's health. 2. He tried to prove that you can do well with a slightly lower difficulty layout if you include performance, and so reduce the trend towards maximum difficulty. (But I mean let's be real Yuzu, your layout was still pretty hard.) 3. He does feel reassured by the SCI scores 4. He's, well, not entirely firm, but certainly leaning towards the opinion that excessively PR lutzes aren't really lutzes, more than it initially seemed 5. Same doubts about judges evaluating steps in and out of jumps as before- 107 replies

yeah, now that I think about it, that's the right reading. it gets a little lost in the translation provided -
HAHAHAHA but let's remember Yuzu killed it at SCI, so he can't be that sad right now. In fact, he's probably still over the moon. I know I am

Oct. 28, 2019 Yuzuru Hanyu Sponichi Interview ๐
shanshani replied to WinForPooh's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
that was my assumption. can't really think of a plausible alternative reading So, based on my reading of it, the main takeaways are: 1. Yuzu feels like he needs to pursue harder jumps. 2. But the pursuit of harder jumps has a negative impact on all skaters' health 3. He can't pre-rotate the lutz no matter how hard he tries because that's not how lutzes were taught when he was young 4. He kinda feels like some quad lutzes have stopped being lutzes, but is kind of wishy-washy about that 5. He feels that his strength is that he can perform music and hard jumps at the same time, but he feels like it's not appreciated enough 6. He also feels doubts about his approach to competing and understanding of how the sport is evaluated. For instance, whether pre-rotating is okay, and whether difficult entries are rewarded. 7. But he feels reassured by his scores at this competition.- 107 replies

Oct. 28, 2019 Yuzuru Hanyu Sponichi Interview ๐
shanshani replied to WinForPooh's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
For some reason when I click the link it says the page doesn't exist, but I still found the tweet. I'm going to try to render it in more idiomatic English because I found the translation a little hard to understand and want to be clear whether I'm understanding it correctly. Just going to do the parts about jump tech. I'm doing some guesswork here as to what the translation means, so don't take this as authoritative or anything. It's also not at all going to be a close translation of Yuzu's words. So: Interviewer: How much of the "things that only I have" that you mentioned before the competition have you shown? Yuzu: I thought to myself that those were what I could rely on in competition but I still felt that I had to gradually pursue harder jumps. I've been practicing with the thought that those jumps are necessary. The axel, and the lutz too. This competition was one where I felt that I didn't have to upgrade my difficulty, that I could rely on my old weapons, which was good. Increased difficulty has an impact on the health of all skaters. Of course, the 4Lz is very difficult, but it's possible that everyone may be able to jump it, if they want to. It also depends on the type of skater. In my case, no matter how hard I practice, I can't pre-rotate it. It wasn't taught that way when I was young. Gradually, the 4Lz might stop being a lutz jump. But at the same time, each skater is different and has their own way of jumping. But I think the current situation is that the scores are tilted towards more difficult jumps, and the balance with PCS has been thrown off. On the other hand, I think that this time I showed that I could perform the music even with my jumps, which is good. Especially the last 4Teu3F. I did a difficult jump combo while matching the music well. I think my weapon is that I can express the music even with difficult jumps, but I think it could be appreciated more. I'm sorry I talked too much *laughs* Interviewer: so would you like to create another form of competition? Yuzu: It's not like that. I've been wondering if the approach I'm taking is truly right or wrong. Whether getting to a standstill position and prerotating might be the right way to jump. Another example is, I've always had a lot of doubts that jumps done from difficult steps are given credit for that. Since the start of this season, I placed high importance on that. I thought, I've been skating a long time, and that was my weapon. It was good it was appreciated this time, which helps reassure me. I believe I must keep doing such things in the future when I add the Lutz or the Axel. the main thing is what "rotating down below" means. I can't really think of anything it could mean but prerotation- 107 replies

Yeah the context was talking about the Russian girls, so he only mentioned the Russian girls

Aww that's adorable. Valieva has good artistry for her level of development (and let's be honest, it can be hard to seem artistic with Daniil programs, even if you are), so the influence does show. She's clearly trying to be a balanced skater. It's awesome the senpai noticed these girls hahahaha In Yuzu-Nathan rivalry news, when was the last time they faced each other when Yuzu was healthy? spoiler: me complaining about dumb things I've seen people say

As I mentioned in another thread, there's no way Yuzu doesn't follow skating closer than 99% of us. I mean this is entertainment for us (although it feels so all consuming this weekend it doesn't just feel like entertainment!), whereas figure skating is Yuzu's life's work. He probably watches all the JGPs, GPs, CSs, etc. and has his own opinions on judging, competitors, etc. He just doesn't make it public (except he evidently though the 4T calls at ACI were bs, just like the rest of us!). edit: now that I think about it, though, I'm dying to know his opinions.

not gonna lie seeing Ted Barton's inner fanyu that he's kept suppressed for so long come out was one of the highlights of the competition well, other than Yuzu's monster skates, that is. now he has to win it another time so that his number of SCI golds can catch up to his number of Olympic golds now getting mental images of a maniacal, pyromaniac Yuzu. guess we could call it a song of ice and fire

good question. rounding error? glitch in software? wouldn't surprise me if the ISU's scores have been slightly off the whole time and no one's noticed I've definitely seen medals decided on margins smaller than 0.06 (JGPF last year had some 0.01-0.03 victories iirc)

Comprehensive judge bias review
shanshani replied to shanshani's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Thank you! It's actually really stressful dealing with some of the comments because of how it blew up. I basically skipped watching Skate America because I had to take a short break from the FS community and figure skating in general And I basically stopped looking at GS after a few hours because I decided it was beyond my emotional bandwidth to deal with it. Support is really helpful. -

"We now have solid evidence that the judges are rotten" would be the click-baity thing to do haha "Statistical analysis shows what we knew all along: the judges do not judge fairly" is slightly more restrained -

@yuzuangel if you could actually retweet it, I would be very grateful. or get someone who has a big twitter following to do so. I'm useless at twitter haha -
depends on the judge really. Japan's judges overall are less egregious than some other countries, and some are even genuinely unbiased (or at least not pro-JPN biased), but there's definitely biased Japanese judges too
