FIFA World Cup 2018

Teams like Iceland are the prime example of anti-football and I fully intend to skip over their next two matches. One was more than enough.

Argentina is in deep trouble though, regardless of this match, they've got real problems with that defense. Messi ... don't do that again, k? You're my favorite player but please. No.

Croatia vs Nigeria should be a corker though and with this tie things are seriously complicated for Argentina now :13877886:

Not really impressed by our french team, but I guess a win is a win...

But I'm totally rooting for Iceland :). Gotta love the amazing blond vikings from a country of barely 300 000 people and their unbreakable goal keeper <3

Oh my god - Iceland! I love that whole team and the fact that their head coach is also a dentist and the fact there are only 100 registered footballers in the ENTIRE country!!! I'm attempted to go and get some Iceland world cup gear. What a team!

I admit, I'll never understand liking teams like Iceland because they're from a small nation when on the field they park the bus and play classic anti-football that is simply put, awful. They literally kill the game. While they also hammer their opponent because they can't do anything else really. Surely, that should matter more? Ah well

I think it's the romanticism of the David vs Goliath and the little guy doing well against the big guns. They have to literally park the bus because they just don't have the talent pool to play the way the big teams play. The only guy (that I know of) that plays professional football in a decent league is Sigurdson who used to play for Swansea (was their best player) and now Everton in the EPL. The fact that they got to the Euros 16 semi and took out England as A TEAM cemented my love for them. It's an amazing story really.... but I get what you're saying..

Yes, I mean, I get the whole idea of a small team and the appeal of the underdog, no doubt but the above is pretty much what irks me especially when bigger teams get so much criticism when they use this method and now suddenly it's peachy when it is Iceland because they're a small nation and this narrative outside the pitch is suddenly more important. This type of play is either ugly or it's not and it really, really is. I guess I just prefer a good game even when my team loses rather than this.

Yup totally get that but the heart wants what it wants sometimes :P Although I must say that the Portugal - Spain game was amazing! It had everything!!!

I loved that Iceland did so well. The improbable story and competitive spirit get me on side. Sure, they will never be Brazil (team of my heart), but as in any team sport it takes all kinds.... and that is also why you play the game instead of awarding on paper.

It was a brilliant game and even with Spain ending on a tie, I loved it. I suppose that's exactly why I can't get on the side of Iceland, underdogs or not (especially as the Polish bloke allowed rough play big time and they so took advantage of it) but yes, I do get how the outside narrative can matter more; it is classic after all! It'll only get more so if they manage to pass this first stage.

I don't like how Iceland plays but what can they do if they have only 100 registered players in the whole country and playing football is basically the second job for many players...

The biggest mistake was that they let Messi kick the penalty, he missed 50% of them from his six previous attempts. Based on how they played Argentina should have won...

Group D is a very difficult group because none of the teams will have it easy against Iceland, and Croatia and Nigeria are also good teams, so it's not really predictable.

About the current game, Peru against Denmark:

A friend of mine sent me this video today, it's so nice: Peru made a video in which they sent a message to Denmark. It's about how they struggled since the last time they were at the World Cup (1982), the fought against crisis and poverty in the past decades, but now they're back. :)

Spoiler

And Denmark sent them back a video with messages from the players (no English subs unfortunately):

Of course Spain-Portugal was a much, much more interesting game - I especially loved the team work of Spain, and their incredible precision. That was art !

But gotta love the outsiders anyway - yes, because there's something romantic in a small nation being able to resist the big ones. And their goal keeper is reaaally good, anyway.
