Skating on the Planet

Nope, he didn't adjust them. He just asked me to stand up in them, took a look and seemed satisfied. I can keep the blades flat when standing on two feet but only if I make a conscious effort. It's far more comfortable to let my ankles roll out, and conversely a little hard to push onto my inside edges.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm thinking to try skating in them as is, then if I'm having issues I'll try my old orthotics. If that still doesn't work, I'll go back and ask to get the blades re-aligned :) I think I'm just really freaking out since it was such a big purchase haha.

Hopefully it all goes well :tumblr_inline_ncmifaymmi1rpglid: Thanks again!

@guitarist I think I read a few pages back that you had over pronation issues? How did you pick up on it and did you try blade realignment or inserts? Very curious!

I haven't exactly gotten them fixed. Still waiting on the new skates, so I'm still on the Artiste. The tech added a superfeet sole on my old ones in the meantime. Since the skates were so big he literally had to put them on top of the Jackson sole, just to add some padding. I've been tightening the skates a lot more, too, as he suggested. It helped, but it's still a problem for the right foot (it's especially a problem when landing my sad Waltz jumps). I'd say it's a 60-70% improvement.

It'll be easier once I get the new skates because they'll be mounting the blade properly. I'll let you know what happens when I get them :10636614:

Your fitter definitely sounds like he knows what he's doing, so that's good!

By the way, how much bigger were your Artistes than your true size? And how did your fitter work our they were too big? Asking because I'm having yet another freak out that my new boots are a half size too big for me and my heels seem to move a bit in them I kind of feel like that everything that could possible go wrong with my boots is happening and it's making me hate life

Can you return your boots? Because yeah, maybe they are too big :( and premounted boots are annoying like that, you can't really adjust the blades, but they *should* be centered as they're professionally done by the boot manufacturer...BUT if they are too big for you, that could lead to the lack of centering.

If you can't return them maybe you can try selling them?

There's a no return policy because Australia sucks like that :/ Seriously, I'm so envious of the return policies in North America.

I think I'm going to have to sell them. I'm just not sure how long it will take because second hand Mystiques and Artistes are easy to sell but these are Freestyles.

I'll try contacting rinks as well to see if they have a pool of second hand skates or something like that where I can offload these.  So sad because they're essentially brand new. I would much rather someone who fits them well to use them.

Hey everyone lurker here! I'm currently taking the Adult LTS class and am testing out of the last basic level soon. I talked to my LTS coach about private lessons and her rate is around $40 per 30 min lesson, and thought it was pretty expensive! Now I'm kind of curious what the private lesson rates are where you skate at. I'm a broke college student but I really love to skate so I want to progress faster but at the same time the lessons are so expensive! :14066882:

He saw me putting them on and immediately went "yeah, they're too big." I'm actually only going a half size down. The issue was at the heel. There was a lot of space there. Even with the extra padding from the superfeet sole I can still feel my heel moving up, which sometimes causes me to lean forward (but this has improved as I've gained control). While I was trying on different models/sizes, he put his finger on the heel area, with the tongue still open, presumably to see how much space would be left once the skate was actually on.

The heel moving is a problem, but if it's not too much perhaps there's a way to add padding. My coach says she did something similar before she started wearing custom skates. How do they feel on the ice? Are they causing problems you didn't have with rentals?

$55/30 min and $90/50 min. It is so expensive :13877886: I can't even feel outraged about the cost, though, since I know coaches struggle so hard to make it. Skating isn't kind on anyone's wallets...

Got the new skates! Will let everyone know how it goes tomorrow (or rather, how long it takes me to stop falling flat on my face while getting used to the blades)

The tech guy is awesome, he was on vacation in Japan during the Sendai parade. He watched on tv, and he found the whole thing amazing and hilarious: "this guy's like the biggest rock star." :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:

EDIT: Update! So... I didn't have any trouble with the toe-pick. The 7' rocker, on the other hand... I didn't fall, but I feel like I regressed by 2 months in terms of skill :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp: The blade is soooo fast. I tried going for a 2 foot spin, and then as I was pulling my right foot in, it went way too fast. The result: "Nope, nope, nope!" *Holds on to the boards for dear life*

And so I'm skating a little bit slower than usual. But my spread eagle is still there, and on a wider circle (the heel problem was making it hard to open my hips on the inside eagle before, not sure why), so I'm happy about that!

This is exciting, I'm still getting used to the blades, but I can already tell it'll feel much better to go for deeper edges a few days from now. They're already improving a little, actually! The third spin attempt went better, and when doing the checkout, my back outside edge was much cleaner than before.

My feet were in pain, but I'm still pretty happy

because we're all masochists

Got my new blades but still haven't mounted them :13877886:we were gonna mount them this Thursday but apparently someone borrowed the screwdriver from the rink and hasn't returned it yet and so we couldn't mount them. We'll mount them next time I have lessons because we'll have to temporarily mount them and try them out before adjusting if necessary and doing a permanent mount The sad part is I feel like I've just gotten my scratch spin stabilized, and I'm making slow improvements on my sit spin...but I imagine I would need to stabilize them again (it always takes a while to get a "feel" of where to balance when things change i guess, although maybe it won't be as hard as I'm fearing).

I've been making slow improvements on my sit spin...every time I "discover" something new I'm like "wait I discovered the breakthrough issue that is gonna make this spin super easy and always centered blahblah" and of course, it's never that but each thing does help improve it little by little...recently I discovered that if you arch your back in your spin entry then it's much easier to arch your back when you sit into the spin...it didn't finally make them work but I can feel that they're getting closer :P

Omg I love the Coronation Aces. Everything feels so easy! Granted, the first 3 hours I felt like I was going to fall and die, but now I love them! My coach brought it up, too, she said my speed improved and it's looking more effortless. So it looks like I was definitely due for a blade upgrade. I'll go get the permanent mount today, so I'll be able to get back to my sad Waltz jumps tomorrow (well, I tried a few, but I was too paranoid to do more).

As for the boots, they're not really broken in yet, probably another 1-2 sessions, but outside edges are already improving. And since the heel moving too much isn't a problem anymore, other stuff has improved, like spread eagles (though I need to work on bending my knees less).

That seems to be the general reaction whenever people get on upgraded blades. A turn from "OMG how do I control this thing" to "OMG, I love it! I can save so much energy now!" Wait till you get to jumps on them....:devilYuzu:

Speaking of masochistic tendencies, I woke up today and could barely move because my whole body is sore but I love it because it means I really worked hard in training yesterday :4:

Um, yeah...I had a mini holiday this weekend, and had 4 days off. I practiced a grand total of around 13 hours total. My back was in pain. Thank god for massage sofas and cushions-used one for half an hour on my back per night and now, no soreness.

And it wasn't because I was training a lot-I asked a rinkmate to see what the heck was going wrong with my RFO edges, and he said it was a posture issue. Then proceeded to fold my back inwards like a pretzel, once he discovered that I was kind of bendy. >_>
