Btw, "Haniwa" is a clay figure placed in/by an ancient burial mound(tomb), as shown on the left side of the picture. Also please be noted that in Japan at the present time, in a sense, Haniwa doesn't represent sth to make you feel gloomy or any negative impact,... but sth cute !! I watched a show posted on GS (MY NAME SHOW) that traced the origins of the Hanyu name and the variant from Ibaraki does come from haniwa - spefifically the clay in Ibaraki that was used to make them. Then for some reason the kanji changed to feathers. :) I think our Hanyu gets his name from a shrine in Miyagi, though.
