Sombreuil
I know- some of the quotes from him on the wall made me smile - total perfectionist. The book was well worth it too, though very heavy as you say- I've paid roughly the same amount for much smaller less well illustrated ones before now. Yeah, I paid more for all British Museum catalogues I bought before then - and they were paperback

The BM exhibition is of work from the last period of his life - some fabulous scroll paintings. It's interesting that some look better in real life than in books - the red Shoki paintings really stand out. I swore some years ago after shuffling round the V&A at an Art Deco blockbuster exhibition that I would avoid the big ones in future but I read somewhere that they had reduced the number of tickets issued to deal with the problem. Doesn't seem to have helped. Oh yes, that exhibition toured here, too. It was fantastic but I don't have the stamina to get through those sorts of things. It's a terrible habit of mine to buy a multi-day pass so I can get through it in stages but it's often too exhausting to face more than once. SparkleSalad
I was Googling the author of the infamous nikkei article to see if I could get to the bottom of the controversy and found this instead! Can anyone tell me who the artist is? I'm quite mad on octopusseseses. http://www.bomb01.com/article/42029 My favourte ancient octopus thing: Octopus vessel from the Palace of Knossos in Crete More information about ancient octopus pottery: https://ferrebeekeeper.wordpress.com/2011/04/15/the-octopus-motif-in-ancient-greek-ceramics/ Lots of modern and ancient octopus art (please excuse the Lady Gaga): http://www.veniceclayartists.com/amazing-octopus-art/
Mastyaeva
Had a chance to visit Hokusai-Hiroshige's exhibition today in Paris (the Guimet museum http://www.guimet.fr/fr/expositions/expositions-a-venir/le-paysage-japonais-de-hokusai-a-hasui ). They even brought "The great wave" here! No comments. Just magical. I've studied it a bit in the university and always admired the delicacy of Japanese landscapes and their wonderful choice of colors. But seeing it with my own eyes is the other lever of joy. P.S. I wonder now: is it the same one as in the British museum in August?

It’s been almost a month, so you might have already found out by yourself, but the artist who created this piece seems to be Keiko Masumoto (桝本佳子 in Japanese.) source: http://contemporary.artmatome.com/斬新な焼き物作品で人気!桝本佳子の陶芸作品/ Keiko Masumoto official website The way she expressed the tentacles with ceramic art is incredible… I also love that she covered the surface with a traditional pattern called “Tako-karakusa” (蛸唐草. 蛸=Tako means octopus. 唐草=Karakusa means Arabesque. This pattern was made in China, and named 蛸唐草 after being introduced to Japan, because the vines with leaves looked like the tentacles of an octopus.) The other two works are also beautiful By the way, octopus in Japan is considered as one of the animals that bring you luck, because 蛸 has same sound with 凧 (=kite which flies high,) and 多幸 (多means many, 幸 means happiness.) Quite possible- it was focussed on the work he did in his old age - it had Red Fuji hung alongside Pink Fuji and a video installation showing how the wood blocks for the prints are carved and a second one showing the printing process. Also lots of amazing large paintings.

Thank you so much for all this information! I hadn't found out - actually I forgot bout it fo awhile. I assumed from the pattern that it was a Chinese artist so it's really interesting to find out the origins and meanings of the pattern and its spreading to Japan. Thanks again, it's all so interesting!

Yes, it seems they made something similar in Paris : no video installation, but there were some large paintings and a lot of small Ukiyo-e. Anyway, it's just so beautiful. I've heard it's popular in Japan, but never thought to that point. Great, now I know what to buy as a present if I would have any Japanese friend. It's funny, but I like it in white colour (as they did it for Sochi), although it's not original one (photo credits : Russian gift-shop "Prizes and gifts" https://www.prizipodarki.ru ). Mastyaeva
Oh, no, it's too cute, thanks for the video. Really, I've never seen dancing Cheburashka. I definitely need to find my old one, give him a hug and throw on ice in addition to Pooch during the Rostelecom Cup (one for SP, another for FS, perfect).
