Sorry to be going back to a less fun topic, but something dawned on me the other evening and it was only last night, right before falling asleep that I had time to check. Under spoiler for everyone not in the mood to read about Boston again ^_^;

Speaking of Yuzu's trouble expressing emotions in the FS in Boston, I was just recently reading through Aoi Honoo 2 and had gotten to the 2013 Worlds, where he had again foot trouble, but he was saying there that he didn't take painkillers because they affected his artistry, basically (unless I misunderstood, which is entirely possible; I think he meant skating skills more than expression, though... I forgot to double check that). So he skated through the pain. Of course, the result wasn't ideal, which might have contributed to his shift in attitude, because for Boston, he said he did take painkillers. And that they didn't really help, but still, he took them. So I was thinking if maybe the problems everyone saw weren't so much from the pain, but more because of the painkillers (and perhaps even more so because of his mental state, which he himself pretty much says was pretty bad, though still mostly injury related). Of course, it doesn't really matter anymore, but it made me wonder.

Thanks for sharing! I didn't know he refused painkillers for Nice. I would think the level of pain at Boston would have been much worse, though, and perhaps no pain killers would have meant withdrawing vs painkillers with less expression. So glad he's bringing SEIMEI back for revenge! (And I can't wait for the movie based on his life.)

But that's the same shirt right? So either they filmed everything in one go or they used the same shirt on him from January.

actually I'm guessing that is a washer/dryer combo so it wouldn't be surprising if it came out dry.

ahhh, this must be a cultural gap thing since dryers are rarely used in Aus (we have an old dryer but it's separate to the washer) -- to me, this is 10000% 'here's one I prepared earlier'

It was 2013 Worlds, not 2012. I didn't look up the kanji to see exactly what the problem was, but I think he actually had issues with both legs. I'll have to look it up properly when I get home, but I'm pretty sure it was 2013 (since I was surprised and kind of like "again??" ^_^; )

Dec 2012 Grand Prix Final was in Sochi, Russia.... Soon after GPF free programme, he had fever and vomiting. He could not attend the interviews the next day nor perform at the exhibition.13 days later, it was Japan Championships in Sapporo, Hokkaido. He had not yet returned to top form but he managed to give a steady performance. He was 1st in SP, 2nd in FP, and overall, he was 1st. This was his 1st win at the nationals in senior level.

 

2013 Feb 8-11 was Four Continents Championships in Osaka. He was in 2nd place. After this, he intended to prepare for World Championships which would be in a month’s time (March 10-17). (My note: He also hit his head on a door and had a bandage over his right eye because it was bleeding profusely. Reports on how or why he hit the door was varied)

 

However, upon returning to Toronto, he became ill with influenza. He had high fever and could not practise at all for 10 days. When he could finally get on the ice again, it was end February. Trying to make up for his lack of practice, and in the absence of Coach Orser who was at Junior Worlds, Hanyu practised desperately and this resulted in him injuring his left knee. He had to rest it for 7 days. When he could return to the rink, it was March 6, only one more week to Worlds.

 

After SP, there was a free day before the FP. During official practice in the morning, the old injury in his right ankle which was sprained during Worlds one year ago flared up. Most likely it was because he was trying to protect the left knee and put more burden on the right leg.

 

So now both legs had problems. Without painkillers, he could not perform. But using painkillers, some of the delicate feelings in the steps and jumps would be lost too. Hanyu decided to take just enough painkillers for the feeling to remain in his legs. He endured the pain and faced the rink.

 

He's been skating injured at Worlds since his debut in 2012. I was happy he was finally injury free in 2017 but then he said he had an asthma attack 2 weeks prior to worlds and there were reports that it happened during practice as well. But... past is past. I'm just glad he's finally looking after his health now (and I believe him this time).

all these information are new to me. I knew he was injured but I never actually read articles about it.

He doesn't like talking about it and feels that they are 'excuses'. He feels that a top athlete can perform under any circumstance. Fans find out about injuries, I think, only after the fact. It took an almost career ending injury for him to realise how important it is to keep healthy and injury free. Honestly, the more you read about him the more emo you're gonna get.

As a regularly sick and injured person who pushed themselves too far and kaboomed spectacularly, that attitude really scares me. I really hope he really truly for really and truly understands how important it is not to push himself. Longevity, please!
