Team we're fewer but still good!
Valkyria replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Igloo World: Team Other Skaters
Happy to see Javi's back to bussiness still praying for a more inspired FS this season tho, please and thanks And poor thing, not remembering the *goat noises* moment. You're a meme now, it's going to be around forever -
I was wondering why the thread had grown so much overnight, then I saw the new pics. Starved for news, are we? Yes, we are. Give us that FS announcement, Yuzu. I can't deal with the speculation anymore XDD

I watched Vincent's FS yesterday and had pretty much the same reaction as you guys. The music cut is so similar to Yuzuru's (as @xeyra said, I was waiting to see if Escape came on to make clear it was more than mere coincidence :_D) that it's just begging for the comparison, and so far it's not looking good for Vincent. Yes, it's still very early in the season and everyone's programs are going to be pretty rough at this stage, but it's more than that. I don't really care about the scoring it got (which was always going to be questionable, considering the circumstances) but about the soul of the performance. Even if it's only us Yuzuru and/or longer term skating fans that have Yuzu's W2012 skate burnt into our brains, the talk is already there and it seems to me like putting unnecessary pressure to try to live up to that on top of everything else. In short: I'm still wondering if it was a very brave decision or a very stupid one

I agree completely. Upping the tech score has always been the way for newcomers to get into the fight for medals, since developing skating skills and improving performance takes more time than going for the jumps, but still. There are ways and then there are ways, and right now it feels like some are disregarding their health too much in order to charge forward like bulls in a china shop

I was nodding my head furiously at all the talk about ISU being stuck in the past and shooting themselves in the foot by taking down the Sailor Moon video but then I got whiplash at Vincent going for 6 quads?? What the heck, since when?? *dies* I get it, going for the jumps gets you the most reward, but seriously. These kids are going to break themselves fast

Newbies Skating Chat & Questions
Valkyria replied to yuzuangel's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Each skater will position their blades where it's most comfortable for them, that's normal. Changing their usual spot because of one jump at the risk of interfering with everything else... maybe not so much. In this case, Shoma saw a shortcut to stabilize the 4Lo quickly and took it, but has to change back because it was causing pain. It probably wasn't meant to be a long-term solution anyway, and now that he's got the feeling of the jump and more time to train it, maybe he's ready to stop using the blade positioning as a crutch *shrugs* But as @yuzuangel said: ouch. His landings can be pretty scary already, but when you realize that he had to compensate for the blades on top of that... -
Newbies Skating Chat & Questions
Valkyria replied to yuzuangel's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
There was a documentary on him not long ago where they showed how his blades were set on his boots off-center to help his take off for the 4Lo: While it was helpful for that, changing the position of the blade affects everything else, too: balance, alignment, etc. That's probably why it ended up being a problem. -
I have no idea what kind of timeline he has in his head for the 4A, tbh. Definitely after Olys and before he r****s, but since we don't know how long he is staying... it could be whenever. If they choose to continue keeping it under wraps, we could even have a surprise!4A one day 4-4 combos don't make much sense score-wise, so none of those in competiton. In shows though, who knows. Yuzu's already done a bunch of crazy combos, he might keep experimenting XD

I always used Javi as a reference too, but since his height is now also up for debate... busted We'll have to go with the official ±172cm or I could volunteer to stand next to him as reference, since I'm right in that same height bracket XD

Me, too. I'm not sure what I want more, for Yuzu to win or for Javi to get a medal still lighting all the candles for both -
Boyang's 3A isn't nearly as steady and easy as Yuzu's, plus now is really not the time to experiment with something as risky as the 4A with the Olys in the horizon; I don't see him going for it seriously, at least not for now. About Jun Hwan, he still needs to fix the scary 3A he has, never mind wanting to upgrade it one revolution :__D I haven't really watched Gogolev enough to predict anything from his side, but seeing as Yuzuru's axel is still the best in the bussiness, that he's definitely very probably had some success with the 4A in practice, and that he's been personally invested in the jump since forever, my bet on him stands. We'll see what he does after the Olympics

So... they tried to solve the height mystery because they knew it was a thing but didn't really clarify much. Thanks for trying, though XDD

I love how the conversation has gone from doing math with layouts to Brian's hair demise On the topic of saltiness, I seriously doubt any other than Yuzuru is even close to a 4A, so his salinity levels should keep steady. I'd still bet on him getting that first ratified one

Same here. My coping mechanism of choice is eating my feelings and ranting my frustrations at poor, supportive, not-so-invested-in-FS friends

When one gets to that point of "can't deal with any more of your crazy shenanigans, you little shits", the energy is just there. Self-preservation is a wonderful thing (and I'm sure he's going to try and save what hair he has left ) About the 4S3T combo: it got added mostly because of the lisfranc injury, right?

This is pretty much what I think. Upgrading in this field is necessary, but striking a balance between adding new elements and keeping a good average is the most important. I think Yuzuru's last season ended up being a very good example of this, and he was right to push for the 4Lo and even the 4S3T in the end (it was frustrating as hell to watch, but if it's staying for good better to get past the trouble then). Whether he adds the new quad or ends up going for the 5 quad layout, now he's been there before and that experience will be a great help. (And since this is all so reasonable, hopefully Brian won't murder him )

Traditional wear suits him, so no complaints here! He'd definitely rock the heck out of a western type suit too if he actually bothered to get one that fits. He needs to go bespoke, nothing off the rack will ever fit him with his body type. Alas, as it is I will forever mourn the impossibility of seeing a nice, Italian-cut suit on him Regarding the spending on merch, I've been battling with myself for years because while I love Yuzu, having horses means they'll eventually break themselves in some creative way (¬¬) and rack up the vet bills, so. Priorities (I did finally bite the bullet and order the Ice Jewels photobook, tho. The temptation was too strong XD)
-
I just realised that would be akin to doing an axel... backwards: X + 1/2 revolutions Also, and this should be taken with a grain of salt since I'm no skater and know nothing of the feel of jumps, wouldn't that be the weirdest thing ever? Trained all your life to land jumps on one same foot, suddenly change it up for this one experimental combination. Kudos if anyone's ever tried something like that, tho.

So they would still land on the left foot, you mean? Don't know if that's a thing, I'll let more knowledgeable people chime in XD

Can't do that, since for it to be a combo you need to start the next jump from the same foot and edge you finished the one before. Like this, since you end the 3Lo on a RBO edge you can't go into a salchow afterwards, which needs a LBI. That's why the Lo is there in the valid combos, to let skaters change their landing foot before the next jump (and why you can only tack a flip or a salchow there).

It worked for the second broadcast of Kobe, so...

I think we're trying to say the same thing with different approaches XD Yuzuru doesn't need that level of complexity in between for the jumps to happen, but he wants it to achieve his ideal. And while his ideal entails a high level of difficulty that transfers to huge scores when he goes clean, I believe he'd still do things this way even if it didn't: he has a very clear picture in his head of how skating should be, a perfect meld of tech and skating skills and music, and he's always pursuing that. It's not an easy path, specially since it doesn't always pay off, but experience has proven that it's the only way he can be satisfied. So yes, nobody's taking Yuzu's bazillion transitions and complicated set ups away from him, even if it would make his life (and ours, maybe?) easier

I used "cowards" in jest. I don't really think downgrading is inherently bad and everyone has to take into account their personal circumstances, so. But still, not for Yuzuru XDD The Skating world is sure to miss him when he r****s, regardless of whatever people want to think right now. His style might not be everyone's cup of tea and that's understandable, but one can't really argue against the fact that he's a technical prodigy who's been pushing at the limits of the sport for years and achieving amazing results. All of that is already a huge legacy to leave behind, even if he were to stop right now please don't, stay forever Yuzu Also, who's gonna bring in all the monies and publicity and new blood to the sport once he's gone? A superstar like him doesn't come around every year Regarding judges/tech panel and reviewing footage, I completely get the frustration. With so many advancements in technology one would expect the iSU would jump on the bandwagon and implement them, but nooo. They've been trying to make competition shorter for years, so no extra time alloted to review stuff ¬¬

As you say, Yuzu will be Yuzu and he will keep all his difficult, complex skating because he wants to and downgrading is for cowards (the 3F is another thing, he needs those turns to keep the inside edge) But it is a pity he doesn't get as much reward as he should for it: it's one thing for the casual audience to be oblivious (and yet, the moment you glance at a skater's feet you notice the difference, even if you don't know what the heck they're doing), but the judges should have the necessary knowledge to give GOEs and PCs accordingly. It's frustrating ¬¬
