As you get older, you start to realize the kind of dedicated selflessness and giving Yuzu is doing is only possible when you're young. He's able to do it because he's 23. Also, adding in to the general discussion re: his potential to earn, Yuzuru seems like the kind of kid who'd always worry about whether his parents had enough, so even if he were raking it in in endorsements, I bet they'd be the ones getting most of it. @KatjaThera To answer your question about Toronto living: Compared to Tokyo it's cheap. Compared to Sendai, it might be expensive.

That would be so darn funny! It's the new Canadian industry!

....aaannnddd now it's back to normal. Oy. Anyway, every time I see Yuzu with kids, he seems like such a natural with them, that I think he must have younger relatives of some sort. He's exactly like a cool big brother or young uncle.
-
Anyone else have this issue? Every time I go to the last page of the thread to reply to the comments about Yuzu and kids, the forum kicks me out and I have to sign back in. But I can post as normal from the second-to-last page.

Don't give the IOC ideas.

I feel like all this is going to have a lot to do with basic physical conditioning before he even steps on the ice. The more fit he can get himself to be, and the more strong his legs , the better a chance he has. Speaking as someone who's witnessed older athletes totally kill it over the young whipper-snappers, it comes to down to training smart and being very, very specific in what you do to achieve the goals. With younger athletes, it's different; the type of physical training done is less important than just doing enough of it because they have youth on their side to make up for the rest. (said the former swim coach. not the same sport, but some of the issues are similar.)

Agreed, and I'm finding it somewhat weird, but on the other hand it's not like Brian doesn't have experience long-distance coaching as he and Yuzu have done things that way for years, so maybe that's what is going on here for now.

I can see why Yuzuru chose to pay a visit there.

You know, I'm sure one day about 10 or 15 years from now, we'll all be watching some Japanese phenomenon who's winning everything in sight and giving interviews that start with "When Yuzuru Hanyu came to my school that time". Champion-ness is hereditary, just not by blood. We inherit it from the people we admire who inspire us.
-
Don't mind me, I'm just pausing to start my day by admiring the wonder that is Yuzuru in hakama. It looks so perfect on him. Everything looks perfect on him. How does he do it? Yuzu-sensei teach me your secret.
-
What a beautiful thing to say. I too sometimes wonder if it's possible for him to live up to everyone's expectations...but he keeps on doing it. As for Yuzu living as a normal person... I'm sure one day he will, some time in the distant future, after he no longer skates.

I thought the same, but honestly, I don't want to know.

I've never understood why Hanyu even has antis...even if you liked another skater before, why can't you like both? Double the love, double the fun. It seems unnecessarily toxic to hate in someone new just because your favorite retired. And poor Shoma if those are the kinds of fans he acquired... -

I agree. In all his interviews post-Oly, he sounded really excited to be getting on with the rest of life. However, it's one of those things I can't help but think right now. -

I have to say that now that this has happened, I wonder if Patrick will be tempted to try another season. These new rules would really favor him, I suspect. On the other hand, in his interviews after the Olympics, he definitely sounded DONE with competitive skating altogether. -

Feels like it's been much longer. Men's skating changed so much in the last 4 years. -

That's just crazy...how long has he been out, 7 or 8 years? This feels a little Torvil and Dean to me. maybe not the greatest idea. -

Something I want to point out: with the rules change, there's going to be a lot more pressure on skaters to skate clean rather than trying and failing on risky elements. Idk if people here can remember, but the last time there was a scoring system like that, skaters were very conservative in what they would try to jump and land. So I think we're going to see a) a different approach to the skating by everyone, and b ) skaters who rarely go clean struggling a lot. In my opinion, what this means is someone like Kolyada or Chen, who are sporadically brilliant but susceptible to nerves, is at a disadvantage, while a skater like ,say, Shoma, who is usually solid, could surge ahead. Yuzu will of course rise to the occasion as always. -

Finlandia is part of the Challenger series, isn't it? There should be some interesting skaters at it, so maybe you can just resell? -
Looks like I'm going to have a chance to see it live! (I sincerely hope he brings it to Laval...)

Yikes. You'd think airports would be safe if only because of the security needed for flying. But you just never know. -

Well, all I have to say about Yuzu doing two European GPs is that I hope he gets judged fairly and honestly at them. And that I'm bummed he won't be at SC. (The reason I say this...I've read some things on the 'net about how there are European members of the ISU who still don't accept that an Asian is winning...so I worry.) -

New name for the Canadians: Nicholas Nadeau at Grenoble. I know nothing about him, but am pleased to see the Canadian men have some fresh blood coming on board.... Also, look at Grenoble: could be a big match-up between Boyang and Nathan.
