I'm surprised that the Japanese government didn't offer to take the 1m yen and publicly donate it in Hanyu's name to a cause instead - eg earthquake reconstruction.

1. In one of the translations of his interview, iirc Hanyu suggested he wanted to be more traditional-appearing (iirc, the rationale was because of the significance of the award) - hence the hakama. 2. There was another translation in this thread about a page or two ago re an interview with Koda stating that Koda's workshop decided to make the sendaihira hakama for Hanyu in June, and the workshop's weavers pulled together to turn what is described as typically a 6 month process into a one month job - so I don't think the reason Hanyu wore it would be because a politician was promoting it - more likely Hanyu would feel obliged to wear it given the value and significance of the gift (as well as the fact that it was gifted to him) and #1 above, and his need/desire to promote Sendai and Miyagi (evidenced by his comments that this award is in part due to all of those people who have supported him along the way - not to mention the fact that just about every post-award interview he comments about wanting to promote Sendai). What may be possible is that the politician was aware of Koda's workshop's plans, and therefore took that opportunity to tweet and promote it.

Guess there's a reason that this workshop was certified as a national treasure! Exquisite workmanship is not something you find easily.

Penguin-walk? To commemorate that there has been a penguin named after him?

Looks like a well-fitted suit from this angle. Maybe the suit's shoulders are slightly wider than his actual shoulders? Hard to tell from this angle where exactly the corner of his shoulders are. Do I hear the loud sound of satellites partially burning through atmosphere and slamming into the ground?

Congratulations to Yuzuru! And to think someone on these forums just yesterday was joking he would be wearing a hakama... And the response was essentially "nah...else all the satellites would just perish"... Good news...there seems to be satellites still revolving around... On another note, there seems to be two different reasons given now for him declining the gift with the award?

Just wanted to point out that there was an interview with Orser previously that pointed out there have been periods of time whereby Orser doesn't see Hanyu for ages (as in Orser being in Canada and Hanyu being in Japan) - but Orser remains involved in training and feedback via videoed sessions of Hanyu's training etc. There was another interview as well that commented that even at TCC, I believe Hanyu's mother videos his practices so that Hanyu himself could review and critique it afterwards.

I'm sure a lot of people would be Such fantastic artistry though...the pose and facial expressions are mint.

I wake up, and I note that the stone slabs have been handed down from high up. It seems nice that Hanyu gets a bit more time to fully get back into things before competing (given he's still trying to stabilise the 4S currently). But 'scuse me, Hanyu didn't get NHK? Colour me surprised...or maybe not...I guess I can understand it if NHK was forced to take Uno. The way the assignments look, barring anything weird happening or any injuries, you would've thought that Hanyu and Uno have both got reasonable chances of getting invited to the GP Finals. But I imagine there would be a lot of disappointed Japanese fans... Anyway, Helsinki is gonna be a heck of a battle in the men's single compared to the other GPs IMO... But does anyone know WHY China decided not to host a GP event this year?

Only the nose? You're being nice...

They are technological dinosaurs after all, as evidenced re the discussion about use of USBs...

And for all the coffee they've ingested, they'll need time for a bathroom break soon too? It will be after lunchtime at this rate...just a matter of whose lunchtime...

Chakra wizard huh? I guess, as they say, any sufficiently advanced technique is indistinguishable from magic (with apologies to Arthur C Clarke). And with Hanyu role-playing Seimei...there's a bit of irony there (I know Seimei wasn't a wizard per se, but demons/magic/fantasy, it's all the same genre).

How could anyone have a negative opinion about that butt spin when he looked like he was having so much fun? That pure enjoyment and the warmth of that laugh whilst he was doing it (as captured in the PC EX practice) was enough to unfreeze the iciest of souls...

Quad lutz needs to be someone fierce. Or better yet, someone who turned out to be a traitor or double-crosser. Sorry, don't know my history very well to suggest an actual name. PS: where are your quad harem ladies? And as for furious debate why Hanyu's quads are female, wasn't that the gender he himself assigned to at least one of them (by pronoun) when he discussed the matter? Or was that just the interpreter's translation in the English sub?

Agreed. "Dory" is a nickname for heaven's sake - heck, @LadyLou has been compiling a whole glossary of nicknames used in these forums. And it isn't being derogatory or anything. If anything, nicknames are typically given by people to others (or to objects) that strike a chord of emotion within. And if that emotion was putrid vile hate, in my opinion, I don't think that Dory would've been the nickname given! Having read through all of @Lenylan's posts (and replies to others as well as others' replies in return, over the last few pages), the impression I'm getting is that there seems to be an expectation by @Lenylan that a forum supporting Hanyu should be like a cult - never expressing anything (publicly) except for pure adoration and likes. Sorry, but in my opinion, that's not real life. You can be a fan, you can like the impression that Hanyu gives as a person, but that doesn't mean you have to like or love EVERYTHING he says or does or EVERYTHING that is associated with him. Even outside of forums, outside of the Internet and its keyboard warriors, can you tell me that with your (IRL) friends that you like/love everything about them? In real life, you may hold silent about things you don't like, but this is a forum - ie an opportunity to discuss things, an opportunity to express points of view...politely and constructively. The few inappropriate (inadvertent or not) remarks made, and non-constructive remarks/attacks made are quickly cleaned up by the Mods and Admins here. I'm sorry you feel the way you seem to feel @Lenylan, but I beg to differ from your point of view. That said, welcome to the forums, we do welcome differing points of view that are constructively put forward, and respect that we are all different - albeit united in our general love/like for Hanyu (even if some of what he does seems weird to us or if we don't like everything he wears etc). Peace. PS: I do believe that the Mods and Admins here draw the line at speculation, and I would suggest your comment about whether Hanyu would like the comments on these forums or not, or be disappointed by them, is likely to fall into the realm of speculation - unless you are claiming to be speaking on behalf of the man himself?
-
I was watching this (that someone linked earlier): ...and I couldn't help but laugh when the comment was made that Hanyu looked like he was serious even in rehearsal - next moment, he falls onto his back on a spin entry, starts laughing, and then starts waving his limbs around whilst he's flat on his back on the ice, like a starfish floundering without water... And then when asked how many times he'd been to Kanazawa, he had to check with someone off-stage...I wonder who that would've been?
-
That was going to be my next suggestion, but it just seemed a tad weird or creepy to me! Next thing you know, it won't just be cryptid sightings, it will be smellings...

Unless he's got two of them? Or it's hanging out to dry whilst on display!

Proposed changes for next season
Cerunias replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Interesting analysis. Another thing to bear in mind is that a slightly shorter skate and one less jumping pass means your stamina doesn't have to stretch quite as far (or you can redirect it towards the other jumps - stamina is a resource that is limited after all). That may benefit Yuzuru slightly more than others (although to be honest, the whole media thing of 'he has asthma' and thing about his stamina is a bit overblown in my opinion - since a) he's a high level athlete after all, b) his astounding work ethic, c) have you seen the jumps/combos/tacked-on jumps he saves to last to do?), but it also does mean that the chance of going clean is probably slightly higher for everyone, or that they can feel they can afford to do more complex entries. The whole repetition thing can be of benefit to Yuzuru who demonstrated in PC that you don't have to be able to jump the most complex jumps (you just have to jump cleanly and max out GOE on every element), as opposed to other skaters who may require certain high scoring jumps to be repeated in order to be able to pump up their score (and we all know that Yuzuru tends to score equal or better in GOEs than his competitors). -
2018/19 Coaching changes
Cerunias replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Probably in their bio on ISU website? A number of interviews have referenced the fact that Yuzuru trains less number of times (and less number of hours) than some of his fellow ice skaters, which is attributable to his asthma, but as Brian Orser says, they make that time count as quality time - quality not quantity. -
It's not like Hanyu prefers SILVERware...gold, I thought, is his preference...

2018/2019 Season Program Announcements
Cerunias replied to kaeryth's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Hey! If satellites on this forum can discern Yuzuru's presence by a random leg in the far background of a fuzzy photo, 3-5 seconds snippet is like a luxury by comparison...
