I was kind of curious if anyone has ever bothered to plot out the men's and ladies' PCS scores to see the normal distribution and where skaters sit on a bell curve. Part of the reason is to figure out what is the avg, mean and actual scores given to skaters, relative to each other, as PCS does seem to factor in skater's relative performance vis-a-vis each other. So I've gathered the data for the ladies at 4CC, taking out Brooklee Han as she WD in the long. So of the 21 skaters, my current results are: Component Mean Median St Dev SS 7.10 6.95 0.88 TR 6.79 6.59 0.97 PE 7.04 6.93 0.99 CO 7.08 6.89 0.93 IN 7.11 7.02 0.99 Sheet is here: (link) I actually don't use excel that often anymore (there's a project software that does all these calculations for me at work), and I'm definitely not a statistician. But I thought having a good normal distribution chart, with a decent indication of where people sit on a bell curve, might give clues as to how big a factor nationality is, and evaluate (vs actual PCS guidelines) where skaters are considered ranked next to each other. Then maybe we can start actual discussions of whether or not skaters are sitting where they should be sitting on the actual bell curve.

To be honest, for centering spins, I realized it's a matter of practicing. After about 4 months it got easier to center my spins. IMO, a bit of it for me is how fast I "pop" into the open position-for me if I pop too fast, and have a very noticeable popping motion, my spin goes off axis and travels. And then it's an issue of how in-sync you are when closing your legs and arms. Have you recorded your spins recently? o_O

[TW] Sexual Abuse & Misconduct in Figure Skating
Xen replied to sallycinnamon's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
This is just.... If people who don't have any ideas about what happened, other than he committed suicide, they wouldn't be able to find any information, other than whatever was written in newspapers. And it's not as if the newspapers that reported it, USA Today, is the world's most trustworthy source, not to mention some of the bias against Brennan. This action just washed the more authoritative information out of the picture. It's really sad that usually, to get more cohesive action done, it would take a very well known person (aka OGM) to come out in public, such as the recent KSU and US Gymnastics cases. =( -
@robin@utsukushii3A and @Murieleirum: Thanks for the insight! Hmm...yeah I don't know about punching out at the skate shop since my tech is about a good 4 hour flight away. XD Maybe I should look into the ice flys? I'll go bug him, since my boots are nearing year 2 and at some point, I might want to change just in case. Risports are pretty sturdy though, so they might last more. But it does feel like there is heel slippage. So, has anyone here ever actually broken/worn down their boots before? Other than visual cues, are there other indications? I've never been able to visibly break down boots before, my boots almost always look 75% worn in, even after a year and half. o_O

The issue has always been how the rules are applied. I know what he's saying is probably that due to the rules not being applied objectively, the subjectivity is making things muddy, not clearer. So what started as helping ensure everyone is on the same starting line, is not working out. I don't think that the GOE bullet points should be taken out, but rather than a separate more objective panel that is not obligated to any country's federation should be making the calls on GOEs. Or at the very least, GOE bullets should be reviewed and judges need to defend their bullets. Yes, for a group of volunteers that might seem harsh, but until it's done, there is going to be far too little consistencny on GOE judging. Some variation could occur, but less than say 1/3 a panel giving a +1, 1/3 giving it a +4/5, and another 1/3 giving 0 and -1. Well....if a jump has been that controversial, some medium must be reached, and it should not be "everyone gets free candies/ lowering the bar" type of standard. Truth is, most skater's jumps are in the +2 range, very few are in the +4/5 range, and know what, that's what is intended. That's how you should be rewarding excellence. I think tech such as ice scope is a move in the right direction- it's easier to see what is considered "average" jump since now you could data plot jumps' height/distance. As for whether that is too much data and not "skating" anymore. Well, why is it not? The idea of have a technical component and an artistic component has always existed. And it would at least force the two to be separated. No one said a skater who has smaller jumps is less artistic. The winner for FS events has always come down to a) who makes the least mistakes; b) who is the most balanced between the two areas of skating.

Question for all ye people in Edeas. Recently during lessons for back scratch spins, I told my coach that sometimes when I force my weight to shift to the front of my boot (balls of feet region) it feels like I'm trying to go on tip toes. But it also feels like my right heel is moving up, rather than just a straight forward shift in weight. This isn't quite the case for my left foot. So she asked me why I ended up with Risports and not edeas. And actually said maybe I should re-considers Edeas. Well truth be told, when I went to my awesome skate technician to change boots about a year ago, he also grabbed a pair of edeas for me to try. Think it was either concerto or chorus. And even after standing, walking around and sitting for 30 mins, I could not adjust to them. He said it was the first time he's met someone who disliked Edeas. It felt like the boots were out for my arches, and the area right under my big toe (the bone joint) felt squeezed the entire time. Granted, that might be normal breaking in process, but I have never felt that with Risports-even when trying out a pair that was 1 size small for me! Now that coach has mentioned it, I'm curious if I should switch back to Edeas. I've heard that actually the higher level boots may be more comfortable than the lower level ones- so are Ice Flys or Pianos actually easier to break in than Concertos or Chorus boots? Is the pinching at the big toe-footpad joint and arches normal or abnormal? Thanks!

I think he'll figure out a way. Also, wasn't it Helsinki where Yuzu said something about the ice being not so great for edge jumps? And he had to fine-tune a bit of his entry speed to compensate for his opening 4Loop? While I'm sure Yuzu never gives himself excuses, sadly edge jumps are impacted by ice quality, and considering that twizzles are done on a flat edge, his 3A take off would be impacted, which would impact his landing.
-
Not only that...wasn't there that program where he wrote 1) 4A on a piece of paper? Part of it is paranoia courtesy of his layout switch at CoR 2017 and that the TV shows were hiding his layout. But I do suspect that the piece of paper was a layout...and the gong sound where his 4Loop is placed is highly suspicious.

Hah, I haven't jumped in a while and that's what my coach is telling me too- that I'm not rising up to jump off my skating leg. Something like my skating leg is giving 6/10 energy, my free leg is giving 9/10 energy, and my upper body is doing 7/10 energy. She says to remember to rise up and jump, and that there should be a little hook at the salchow, like a small check mark that indicates you rose off the toepick. As for PR too little- yes, have a rinkmate who gets that and he is trying 2S. It tends to make his 2S rotate out of the axis/circle, so he tends to land with UR and SO before collapsing on his butt.

I wish our way of transferring healthy ankle energy was a little less painful.... (please heal well axelnojutsu)

Dear Meme-lord/troll/space-kitty overlord, hopefully enjoying himself in Toronto (or Sendai) with a nice meal (but realistically probably furiously typing at a finals paper), hope you have a nice Christmas and a wonderful New Year. The past year was not easy, but through all the hardships, you did manage to accomplish one of the elusive goals you set out to do. So congratulations on that! And while disaster did strike again towards the end of the year, and you have to head into darkness again, hope you remember your own saying: there is no never-ending night, dawn will always come. As you head into the New Year, may your wishes and desires become reality, and the odds as always forever be in your favor. As for us fellow satellites- wishing all of us far and wide a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year! What is the silence of winter but preparation for the joyous raptures of the coming spring? Let's wait in peace, because spring will come always. =)

It's possible they won't go after any official ones- ie if BESP uploads anything to youtube, it's less likely that SBS will go after them, simply because it's a bigger hassle, as BESP I imagine, would have a similar clause in their contract with ISU for broadcasting (live, streaming and online on any platform). Official uploads would also allow geo-blocking so there are plenty of nuances involved. The only ones going down right now, are fan-uploaded videos- but if you want to get into legal nuances, there may be plenty of legality issues involved in fan-uploads themselves (just because there are no profits involved does not mean it automatically falls under fair use). But also, fan uploads probably have less legal protection (financially etc) to defend against takedowns.

Your mom is awesome.

I think the video wasn't meant to be yuzu-centric, but some fans found it. The person taking it seemed to be more "Oh look, I'm at TCC, here's a quick look of what's going on on the ice!" Heard that some fans are already storming the account?

Good to hear it helped. The same theory applies to back crossovers- but easier because you don't need to lift your foot when crossing over for a standard back crossover. The half swizzles is really just to get you used to leaning into the circle/edge for the cross over. Once you're comfortable with it and can hold that edge okay, the crossing over bit is pretty managable. =)

Hmm... it's interesting, but I really don't know if you should read too much into it. The rise and dip in the PCS do correspond to the cleanness of Yuzu's programs, and considering he had axel issues in Rostel, rules wise he really couldn't score too high due to the "major errors" cap in place now. The other guys' data also kind of correspond with their general cleanness too- though Shoma got lower than I thought, though you could argue that his weird 4S could count as a major error. But it seems, that should the trend follow, clean programs from the guys, would put Yuzu at around 9.6+ PCS avg, Shoma and Nate both hover around 8.7-8.9, and Jason should be around 9.2, Kolyada also around 9.0. Which is the same theme as we've come to expect.

Well a couple of us are skating this week right? So let's see when we get there. =D

古龙曾说:“歌女的歌,舞者的舞, 剑客的剑,文人的笔,英雄的斗志,都是这样子的, 只要是不死,就不能放弃。” Gu Long once said, "The song of the singer, the dance of a dancer, the sword of a swordmaster, the pen of a writer, the spirit of the hero, they are all like this- so long as one lives, one shall not give up." (Gu Long= well known writer who wrote historical martial arts fantasy-fiction)
