unicorn
@Murieleirum amazing work! I think the fluidity and gentleness of H&L really shine through when different music is put on, but there's glimpses of the idea of what a Danse Macabre program for him could look like with some different movements, and it's a tantalizing idea to think about! The timing on so many things like the ramp up to the 4S+3T and then the spread eagles right after are incredibly well-matched, and especially for me, the entire 2nd half has so many great ideas for timing to play with. The 3A jump combinations fit quite well, and as @Anony said, the 3Lz and combination spin at the end are particularly wonderful! I'd love to see more of your work, thanks for sharing it with us Link to comment
sallycinnamon
@Murieleirum I can only repeat @unicorn's words, what a fantastic work, thanks for posting! I especially loved 4S3T and the dramatic music to it, and the whole second half of the program, the choreo sequence and the 3Lz are just brilliant. Danse Macabre would suit Yuzu so much. I hope to see more of your videos as well! Link to comment
mushroombb
i'd really like to see yuzuru do another classical piece, preferably not as warhorsey as carmen, swan lake, etc or even if those, just not the super overused cuts of music haha. i wonder whether olympic season will bring back his warhorse tendencies in full force Link to comment
SuzyQ
Thank you guys for your all suggestions! It's so fun to listen to and imagine how it would suit Yuzuru's skating Danse Macabre is great. Since Yuzuru himself said violin music suits his skating in the talk with Shizuka Arakawa in 2013, I have been looking forward to seeing a string master piece program by him, especially after seeing Shoma's Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY6Xa94DR4A His last spin is exquisite and I dreamed how it would be like Yuzuru's beautiful spins to strings Mihoko sensei's music choice always hits the point. And this time, I rediscovered that she is nothing but a strategist I happened to watch an old movie on the cable TV today. It was nearly ending but the ending music impressed me. The Mystery of Your Gift https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiqOUeYasLE The image of Yuzuru skating to this piece in EX instantly came to me. Sorry guys, I frequently daydream these days when I listen to nice music, although limited to skating I like Sibelius Violin Concerto for his FS. Not yet a warhorse, right? Just for your reference: Ryu Goto plays game music. Then there's La Campanella by Paganini, though I really wonder if it would be too quick? The piano version is super quick at the ending. If anyone ever, ever does a performance to the piano version of La Campanella, and does it well, I'd probably die from awe, shock and happiness... it's one of my favorites. Link to comment
Vivienne
@Xen: Thanks for mentioning La Campanella, I always dream of Yuzu skating to this. The quick part is for crazy footwork Link to comment

The quick part is for crazy footwork I wonder if it's even possible. Especially the piano version, there's just no way to cut the music down from the full length-it's just not La Campanella if you do so. So 2017-2018 might be the last season it could ever make it's way to skating for the piano version. Honestly, I think the pacing itself does not lend well to ladies, pairs or dance (it's not romantic enough), so that leaves men's singles. And then after 2017-2018 aren't they going to cut the men's to 4 mins too? Link to comment

I like Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso too La Campanella may be good for SP depending on the editing. Most of my favorite violin pieces are rather slow, I'm sorry that they do not seem to fit competitive programs, e.g. Vocalise, Rachmaninoff; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wTEylWQfcM Nigun, Broch; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngsgGeIa32c Poeme, Chausson; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LVxdpALMZo Yes, I know I love weeping strings Only chance is for Yuzuru's EX programs. But I know it's very unlikely (sigh). My knowledge about classic music is limited. I've started to listen to Beethoven's violin sonatas as I really miss Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9 for Yuzuru. Marin Honda used Sonata No. 5, didn't she? There might be gold buried Link to comment
SuzyQ
If you think about Japanese composers, I think Yuki Hayashi may be one of them to be included. He is the composer of the theme of "Spirits of the Athletes", so maybe you remember it. He has not studied music formally. It's so amazing to know that he started his career from composing the background score of his own rhythmic gymnastics program. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuki_Hayashi_(composer) Other works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZnXWuNlMsg&list=RDmZnXWuNlMsg&index=1 I liked the theme of ストロベリーナイト "Strawberry Night", and once mentioned this in GS thread, but I didn't notice until recently the composer of "Spirits of the Athletes" is the same person. Murieleirum
Thanks @sallycinnamon and @unicorn for your kind words. I am very happy that you liked it and this motivates me to do something else today, heheh... probably an Ennio Morricone medley with the musics from Canone Inverso (a weakness of mine, the movie that made me want to learn violin when I was 6) Thanks @Xen for sharing that version of La Campanella, if you like it I suggest you to search for Leila Josefowicz playing it when she was just 15, she is really exquisite (pssst, she also played Saint-Saens Rondo Capriccioso, but there's not a very good version on youtube. She's kinda off the radar now) Somehow I think La Campanella is a very high spirited, funny piece, so for Yuzuru to choose something like this would be to "return" to a time where he also did 'lighter' pieces - for example, Paganini Caprice n.24 variations, or Zigeunerweisen. Somehow, I don't think he'll pick anything like this for Olympic season, because it wouldn't quite suit his intentions, right? These high-spirited pieces are mostly virtuosistic. If there's someone who might pick them, I think It'd be Nathan Chen. Unfortunately, if I think of virtuosistic pieces for Yuzu, all sorts of not-very-known and probably not judges-proofed come to mind xD This solo violin Ballade is crazy in terms of playing difficulty, so it makes me think of Yuzuru's footwork. It has his spirit, his fierceness. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend for Olympic season. Link to comment
SuzyQ
I found a video Ikuko Kawai plays Jupiter with a Japanese instrument Shakuhachi. This sounds exotic, although the music itself is well-known. As you may know, Yuzuru's White Legend is the one played by her also with Japanese instruments. I really love Mao's Jupiter program The lyrics are touching too. I want to see Yuzuru and Mao could collaborate someday with this music. Link to comment

But Nathan Chen's skating style does not strike me as the type that would really match the "lightness" and "delight" that La Campanella requires. If Mai Mihara does it though, yes I can buy it. To me, La Campanella is a transitions crazy piece, with a lot of small little sneaky details that you need to be fastedious about. I think Nathan could potentially do it, but I don't see it yet in his skating from this year...at least it feels almost polar opposite of polovtsian dances. =( Leila Josefowicz -thank you for mentioning her. Listening to her playing and having an ear-gasm right now. =) What is your view about Bruch's violin concerto? But yeah, in terms of composers that come to mind, Yuzuru does make me think that the Russian giants would fit; was also thinking that Schubert might fit, and maybe some of the pieces of Liszt. @SuzyQ: Actually Holst's Jupiter might work for Yuzuru. It's a very regal piece. Though I might actually prefer the original ochestration, there are bits in the original ochestration that would allow a chroegraphic pause. And then a lot of brass that could highlight steq sequences and jump landings. The vocal version that Mao used, does lend more to spins and line extensions (spirals, ina bauers etc) more, but the original ochestration would match jumps more. As for vocalise, yes, I think he might be the only male skater I can think of right now, who can pull it off for exhibitions. =) Vocalise was something I wanted to skate to as a teenager when I started skating. If I close my eyes, I would imagine a lot of held extensions, spirals, ina bauers, all of which Yuzuru has in spades. What would be funny though, is if one of us actually guesses his music choice for the season correctly.... Link to comment

You're right, I didn't mean to couple Nathan with La Campanella, it's definitely too light for him and his quad landings I was thinking more along the lines of his program being sort of like a virtuosistic musical piece from the 1850's - not very emotional but done to 'strike the audience'. I honestly love polovtsian dances, especially the version he used in the FS. I bet he will stay on that musical path right there - epic, powerful music as a soundtrack for his very ambitious skate. Bruch At the end of my 3rd violin year at middle school, my teacher gave me 3 musical sheets: Vieuxtemps' 5th concert, Paganini's Moto Perpetuo, and Bruch. She said: have fun. I did. Bruch is such a wonderful piece. It's absolutely stunning, and how she played it, it made me love it even more... I have to admit it, I've tried synch-ing the Third movement with Yuzuru's FS! Both the First and the Third, I think, are perfect for a skating program. It's just gonna be hard to cut it right! If you have anything to suggest for Schubert and Liszt, I'm all ears. I'm pretty ignorant about these composers! Link to comment
Lyyli
Thanks for all the music you guys have brought up here. SuzuQ, thanks especially for the Japanese ones. I do hope Yuzu´s another piece will be Japanese also next season. Imo the other one could also be Mozart PC23. I would love to see his version of it. Gabby/Guillaume´s FS season 2014-15 was so beautiful. I guess Yuzu might like the music. Link to comment
