I watched a show posted on GS (MY NAME SHOW) that traced the origins of the Hanyu name and the variant from Ibaraki does come from haniwa - spefifically the clay in Ibaraki that was used to make them. Then for some reason the kanji changed to feathers. :) I think our Hanyu gets his name from a shrine in Miyagi, though.
